Students will be prvided with a critical verview f the study f Psychlgy, fcusing n the theries and research methds used in psychlgical science and practice. Because Psychlgy is a fascinating curse, it is pssible t explre the field using a variety f methds. The curse infrmatin will be presented thrugh lectures, class participatin activities, demnstratins, and audi-visual aids. Students will use the text bks and ther resurces such as the internet, ppular media, newspapers, and prfessinal Psychlgical publicatins in rder t cnduct research thrughut the year. Students will learn abut the methds and ethical appraches f prfessinal Psychlgy. Yu are t be cmmended fr taking n the challenge f hnrs curse during this year. If the effrt is put in, the rewards can be significant. It is ur gal t create a level f understanding and interest in psychlgy that will benefit yu in this class and the rest f yur academic classes. REQUIRED MATERIALS 3-ring binder OR 3 subject ntebk Cllege ruled ntebk paper (fr students using a binder fr ntes) Index cards (yu need LOTS f these) 1 pack f dividers (fr binder, ptinal) Flder fr handuts 1 highlighter (any clr) 2 blue r black ink pens CLASS POLICIES General Expectatins: Attendance is paramunt t success in this class. Students are expected t arrive n time and prepared fr class. When the bell rings t begin class, students must be seated and engaged in the daily D Nw activity. Students are als expected t actively participate in class discussins and activities, and cmplete all assigned readings and ther assignments. Be plite and respect ther s pinins and beliefs. 2 Yu must fllw the dress cde plicy. This includes yur ID which shuld be wrn at all times. Cheating/Plagiarism: NO CHEATING r PLAGIARISM! There are NO EXCUSES and I have a ZERO TOLERANCE plicy fr these ffenses. Grading: Students will be ding a substantial amunt f writing bth in class and at hme. Wrk is expected t be riginal, which means students are nt t cpy answers directly frm a bk, the internet, r anther student. All typed assignments will be submitted via Turnitin.cm, and checked fr grammar and plagiarism. Plagiarized papers will result in a zer fr the assignment and an appearance befre the MBSH ethics bard fr plagiarism. Nte that plagiarism may result in the remval f a student frm the AP class and/r a failing grade fr the assignment, marking perid, r curse. Since ur bjective will be t prepare yu fr upper level classes, yur grade fr each grading perid will cnsist f hnrs-level multiple-chice exams, vcabulary quizzes, essays and daily activities. Grades will be determined by yur perfrmance n the quizzes (pp r annunced), exams, essays, prjects and ther classrm activities. Very little extra credit is ffered; d nt cunt n using it t save yur grade. Whatever grade yu earn at the end f the term is the grade yu earn in the class. There is n negtiating. Tests are nt necessarily graded n a curve. Accrding t Miami-Dade Cunty Public Schls plicy, students may nly make up wrk fr excused absences and they must d s within a week f being absent. Mre than 10 unexcused hurs may result in autmatic N Credit. All grades and agreements made in Ms. Balgbin s class are subject t student attendance and the N Credit plicy. 3 Nte Taking: The curse textbk will be extremely valuable in preparing fr tests and quizzes, but students shuld nt limit themselves t these resurces nly. In additin t the reading required frm the textbk, additinal reading will be assigned during the academic year. Students will be expected t use any resurces necessary t cmplete the bjectives f this curse. There are several ther texts and study guides available in the classrm fr students t utilize which will help prepare them fr all exams at the thrughut the schl year. Keep a ntebk r binder with all class ntes. Yu are respnsible t bring yur ntebk r binder t every class. If I check fr ntebks/binders and yu d nt have it, yu will receive a failing grade fr that day. Class ntes shuld be written in BLUE r BLACK INK PEN. ABSOLUTELY NO PENCIL PwerPint Lecture Ntes: All PwerPint Lecture ntes are available t print r dwnlad n Ms. Balgbin s website: Vides: Students shuld have access t the PwerPint lecture ntes either electrnically r have a printed cpy in class at all times. Sme dcumentary vides, mvies r vide clips frm TV shws r mvies may be used during the schl year t encurage critical thinking and allw students t analyze and apply cncepts learned in the classrm t situatins that may ccur during ur lifespan. Dcumentaries, Mvies, Vide Clips that may be used: One Flew Over the Cuck s Nest, Brain Games, Thin, Tab, Pay It Frward, One f Tw Minds, Stress the Prtrait f killer, Harding Buried Alive, My strange Addictin, Tddlers and Tiaras, Schindler s List, Big Bang Thery, Friends Essay Writing: Students are required t write essays in dark blue r black ink, as such any wrk submitted t Ms. Balgbin nt cmpleted thusly will nt receive a grade. ABSOLUTELY NO PENCIL! Any assignment that is written in pencil will nt be accepted and will result in an F. In additin, all wrk that is turned in fr grading needs t be legibly written in blue r black ink pen r typed. Electrnic Devices: Yu are allwed t use sme electrnic devices (ipads, tablets, laptps, electrnic ntebks) in class t take ntes hwever, if the device is nt being used fr class wrk and becmes a distractin, it will be cnfiscated and will be returned t the student at the end f the class perid. N cellular phnes are allwed t be used during class. If smene needs t cntact yu, they shuld cntact the main ffice. Make Up Plicy: If a student misses an assignment due t an illness r ther excused absence, it is up t the student t make up the wrk. The student has 5 days upn receiving an admit t make up the assignment. All make up wrk will be given at the end f the class perid r can be dwnladed frm the website. Ms. Balgbin will nt accept stacks f late wrk at the end f any grading perid. If yu miss a class, yu are respnsible fr cllecting the wrk, cmpleting it and handing it in within the given time (5 days nce an admit is issued).
