(1) Prfessinal Ethical Cnduct, Practices and Perfrmance. (A) Standard 1.1. Factrs that may be cnsidered in assessing whether the cmmunicatin is inapprpriate include, but are nt limited t: (i) the nature, purpse, timing, and amunt f the cmmunicatin; (ii) the subject matter f the cmmunicatin; (iii) whether the cmmunicatin was made penly r the educatr attempted t cnceal the cmmunicatin; (iv) whether the cmmunicatin culd be reasnably interpreted as sliciting sexual cntact r a rmantic relatinship; (v) whether the cmmunicatin was sexually explicit; and (vi) whether the cmmunicatin invlved discussin(s) f the physical r sexual 6

Surce Nte: The prvisins f this adpted t be effective March 1, 1998, 23 TexReg 1022; amended t be effective August 22, 2002, 27 TexReg 7530; amended t be effective December 26, 2010, 35 TexReg FIELD EXPERIENCE FIELD EXPERIENCE GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Field experience is required befre student teaching fr candidates t bserve and practice teaching techniques and instructinal strategies that are studied in undergraduate curses. Field experience builds a fundatin t draw upn t help ur candidates develp int the best educatrs pssible. Undergraduate field placements are made within San Angel Independent Schl District (SAISD) r Grape Creek ISD (GCISD.) When yu enrll in a curse that requires field experience yu will fill ut a shrt applicatin that will be turned int the Educatr Preparatin Infrmatin Center (EPI Center). On that applicatin yu will list three campuses where yu wuld prefer t d yur field experience. The Field Experience Advisr will wrk with campus administratrs t make yur placement, taking int cnsideratin yur chice f schls. The campus administratr will decide which teachers t assign field experience candidates. If yu wuld like t d yur field experience utside f SAISD r GCISD yu will need t nte that n yur field experience applicatin and then secure yur wn placement. A letter r frm the campus administratr must be prvided t the Field Experience Advisr that states yu have permissin frm the campus administratin t cmplete yur field experience n their campus. ACTIVITIES- The level f field experience required is dependent upn the curse in which yu have enrlled. Yur curse syllabus and yur prfessr will discuss the requirements fr the specific curse. Yu will wrk with yur cperating teacher t ensure that yu have pprtunities t meet thse requirements. Sme curses will require that yu actively bserve. Active bservatin means that yu might sit with a small grup r next t ne child while bserving what the teacher is ding thrughut the classrm. Active bservatin des nt mean that yu sit and d nthing. ATTENDANCE Yu are expected n yur assigned campus every week. Yur cperating teacher ften will plan activities arund yu being in the classrm, s make sure yu are cnsistent with yur attendance. If yu are unable t make yur bservatin time yu need t cntact yur prfessr, yur cperating teacher, and the frnt ffice f yur assigned campus s they will nt be expecting yu n campus. Nrmally, there shuld be n reasn fr yu t be late fr scheduled field experience. If the situatin is unavidable, yu must ntify yur prfessr, yur cperating teacher and the frnt ffice f yur assigned schl t ntify them yu will be late t campus. Excessive late arrivals may result in yu nt being able t cmplete yur field experience. If yu cannt cmplete yur field experience assignment, yu will receive a failing grade fr that curse. 7

8 COOPERATING TEACHER Cperating teachers are assigned by the campus principal. Yur cperating teacher will give cnstructive criticism and suggestins fr imprvement. Yu shuld accept the criticism graciusly and try ut the teacher s suggestins. CONFIDENTIALITY If the administratr r faculty member shuld cnfide in yu, the cmments are cnfidential. Keep all infrmatin abut students cnfidential and reprt nly t authrized persnnel. D nt discuss any part f yur field experience in public, including in scial media such as Facebk r Twitter. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK If yu are ding yur field experience in SAISD yu must have a criminal backgrund check run and cleared at the beginning f each semester befre ging nt any SAISD campus. The Field Experience Advisr will prvide the infrmatin n hw t cmplete a criminal backgrund check at the beginning f each semester in all curses that are requiring field experience. Grape Creek ISD requires a simple DPS Criminal Backgrund check. There is a simple frm t cmplete and drp ff r fax back t the ffice at The frm is lcated n ur website under Field Experience Infrmatin Items. If yu will be ding yur field experience utside f SAISD r GCISD, yu will need t cntact the district s Central Administratin building t make sure yu have fllwed all the rules and regulatins f that district. EXPECTATIONS Yu must arrive at least 10 minutes earlier than yur scheduled bservatin time. (Yu may nt include travel time as part f yur bservatin time.) Yu must sign in at the ffice & classrm fr each visit. Yu must keep dcumentatin f yur hurs s that yur prfessr can verify yur attendance. Yu must g in with a psitive attitude. Yu must always use apprpriate language. Yu may nt have firearms r ammunitin in yur car, purse, bag, anywhere. Yu may nt have tbacc prducts f any kind. Yu may nt have a cell phne. (Leave it in yur car.) Yu may nt chew gum. Yu must btain a Criminal Backgrund Check and secure an I.D. badge. GRADING Yur prfessr will evaluate yur wrk and issue yur curse grade. If yu d nt cmplete yur required field experience, the result will be a failing grade. SCHEDULE Yu will be ntified f mandatry Principal Meetings that yu will need t attend in rder t receive the cntact infrmatin fr yur cperating teacher. After the meeting, yu will cntact yur cperating teacher t wrk ut an bservatin schedule that wrks fr the bth f yu. If a curse requires yu t bserve ten hurs a semester yu are expected t bserve ne hur a week fr ten weeks. If yu are required t bserve twenty hurs a semester yu are expected n yur campus tw hurs a week fr ten weeks, etc. Yu shuld arrive n yur assigned campus in plenty f time t find parking, sign in at the frnt ffice, and make it t yur classrm befre yur scheduled start time. If yu are scheduled fr a ne hur bservatin, yu will need t spend an entire hur (60 min) in the classrm. (Yu may nt include travel time as part f yur bservatin time.) 8

9 FIELD EXPERIENCE BEHAVIORS AND ATTITUDES The Field Experience Candidate is expected t adhere t the Teaching Dispsitins f Angel State University and the Cde f Ethics and Standard Practices fr Texas Educatrs. We expect ur candidates t g int field experience with a psitive attitude and prfessinally represent ASU. At all times, candidates are expected t use apprpriate language and prfessinal appearance. DRESS CODE Field Experience Candidates are expected t dress prfessinally and cnfrm t the expected dress cde f classrm teachers. 1. Candidates hair will be clean and well grmed at all times and shall nt bstruct visin. 2. Candidates must wear apprpriate shes at all times. (Flip Flps/ Huse slippers are nt allwed.) 3. All frms f headgear (hats, caps, hdies, bandanas, etc.) are nt acceptable. 4. Shrts are nt permitted. 5. Prper under garments must be wrn and nt be visible. 6. Any attire related t negative grup behavir (gangs, etc.) will nt be permitted. 7. Candidates may nt wear slgan buttns r clthing with inapprpriate r vilent slgans r advertising. (An example wuld be an alchlic beverage r tbacc advertisement.) 8. Visible bdy piercing shall be limited t ear piercing. All ther visible piercings, including retainers r spacers, are prhibited. 9. Over-sized style pants that wuld give the appearance f being baggy r saggy will nt be permitted. 10. Shirts and bluses must be tucked in unless they are shrter in length than the student s extended fingertip. 11. Sunglasses may nt be wrn in the buildings n the eyes, head, arund the neck. 12. Candidates may nt wear unusual cstumes that attract attentin and detract frm the learning atmsphere. This includes unusual hairstyles r hair clring. 13. Tatts are nt allwed t be visible. 14. Hles and/r shredding n jeans/pants are nt permitted. 15. Female Candidates: * Nthing may be wrn that shws/ bares the midriff (frnt r back). * Skirts must nt be shrter than the students extended fingertips. * Divided skirts, hemmed abve the knee, are cnsidered shrts and may nt be wrn. * N spaghetti straps, tank tps r visible under-clthing will be permitted. * All tps must be at least 3 fingers wide n the shulder. * Lw-cut tps may nt be wrn. * Skintight attire is nt acceptable. (This includes bike shrts and spandex.) EMPLOYEES Cperate with the administratin, faculty, and staff. This will braden yur experience and give yu an pprtunity t make cntributins f sme significance that will be appreciated by the schl. SCHOOL Be sensitive t the standards f the schl and cmmunity; cnduct yurself accrdingly. Make an attempt t intrduce yurself t ther faculty and administratrs n yur campus. Find ut the plicies f the schl, and bey schl regulatins. STUDENTS Shw genuine interest in the students. Get t knw yur students as individuals by learning their names and their backgrunds. Be cheerful and friendly in yur dealings with individuals and grups. Be cnsistent, fair and impartial. Remember, yu are nt there t be their friend, but t be a psitive educatr. 9

10 STUDENT TEACHING The student teaching assignment is the mst imprtant field-based experience fr the ptential prfessinal educatr. The purpse f the teacher educatin prgram at Angel State University is t develp well-runded beginning educatrs wh are prepared in their subject fields and have had pertinent and practical experience in all phases f teacher educatin. Several field-based curses prvide pre-student teaching experiences leading t a fulltime student teaching experience. As a student teacher, yu will experience apprehensin, excitement, and a variety f ther emtins as yu enter this semester. These are all t be expected; hwever, we believe that yu have the preparatin and the ptential t be successful. Yu will be assigned a university supervisr wh will wrk directly with yu during yur student teaching experience. STUDENT TEACHING PLACEMENT- Yur student teaching placement will be made in a Texas accredited public schl fr a furteen-week student teaching experience. The student teaching placement is determined based n previus field experience wrk. The Field Experience Advisr evaluates each candidate s field experience histry t determine placement fr student teaching t insure the candidate has experience wrking with diverse student ppulatins. STUDENT TEACHING GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Plicies and prcedures that regulate student teachers, bth written and implied, will be fund in lcatins thrughut this handbk and ther publicatins. ASU STUDENT TEACHING TEAM During the fulltime student teaching semester, experiences will be develped, implemented, and evaluated by the student teaching team cmprised f the university supervisr, the public schl cperating teacher, and yu- the student teacher. The team will wrk cperatively in rder t develp a psitive and effective student teaching experience. Since yur perfrmance will be evaluated by yur university supervisr and yur cperating classrm teacher, yu will need t fulfill the requirements set frth by bth f them. Yu will be evaluated in many areas such as: planning, teaching, assessment, attitude, enthusiasm, classrm management, relatinships with thers, and willingness t participate in activities utside the classrm. Perfrmance expectatins fr all areas are detailed in rubric frmat in yur nline prtfli in TaskStream. Other imprtant members f yur supprt team include yur campus principal, campus teachers, fellw student teachers, and the ASU Field Experience Advisr. Yur student teaching experience shuld include learning abut schl peratins that ccur utside f yur classrm because thse activities directly affect yur students. Student teaching is yur chance t see hw all the pieces f the public schl life fit tgether. Here s a brief descriptin f each team member s rle: Campus Principal The campus principal will treat yu as if yu are an emplyee. If yu shuld have a prblem with a student r parent that cannt be reslved by yur classrm teacher, the principal will be able t step in and help with the situatin. The principal is there t supprt yu in yur effrt t becme a teacher. 10

11 Cperating Teacher Cperating teachers have a minimum f three years teaching experience and are Texas certified teachers. They are assigned by the campus principals and are respnsible fr easing yu int yur teaching respnsibilities. Yur cperating teacher will give cnstructive criticism and suggestins fr imprvement. Yu shuld accept the criticism graciusly and try ut the teacher s suggestins. The cperating teacher is a key persn in assisting yu as yu make the transitin frm student teaching t yur first teaching psitin. Student teaching is the avenue thrugh which yu advance frm thery t practice. The nly way t establish a successful relatinship with yur cperating teacher is thrugh effective cmmunicatin. If yu d nt understand what yur teacher is asking yu t d, ask fr clarificatin. If yu still d nt understand, ask again. Keep the lines f cmmunicatin pen and flwing freely, r yu may bth becme frustrated and unhappy resulting in a negative student teaching experience. If yu have discussed yur cncerns with yur cperating teacher and the relatinship des nt imprve, tell yur university supervisr abut the prblems yu are having. University Supervisr The rle f the university supervisr is t serve as a facilitatr fr the implementatin f the student teaching prgram. Acting as the liaisn between Angel State University and the public schls, university supervisrs maintain prper cmmunicatin with the Field Experience Advisr, campus principals, cperating teachers, and student teachers. Yur university supervisr will visit yu fur-six times during the semester. The supervisr may bserve yu teaching a lessn, check yur prtfli, attend a benchmark meeting, r visit with yu and/r yur cperating teacher t see hw yu are ding. It is yur respnsibility t keep yur university supervisr advised f any situatin, bth gd and bad. Fr instance, if yu have a prblem with a student r parent, infrm yur university supervisr even if the cperating teacher r campus principal reslves the prblem. The supervisr needs t be aware f any incidents that culd affect yur successful cmpletin f student teaching. If yu are late r absent, yu must cntact yur cperating teacher as well as yur university supervisr. Abve all, always cmmunicate yur successes, needs, r fears t yur university supervisr. We want yu t have a wnderful, psitive student teaching experience! ATTENDANCE The student teacher must fllw the public schl calendar during the student teaching assignment and is expected t be in schl every wrking day. Yu are nt allwed t leave during the schl day unless abslutely necessary and apprved by the cperating teacher. In the case f any situatin in which the student teacher must be absent frm schl, the cperating teacher AND the university supervisr MUST be ntified prir t the absence r, in the case f an illness r emergency, as sn as yu knw yu will nt be n campus. Be sure t leave a set f yur lessn plans in the classrm at all times in case yu have t be absent. All absences will be dcumented and must be made up accrding t a written plan that is jintly develped by the student teacher, the university supervisr, and the cperating teacher. Excessive absences culd result in remval frm the prgram r a Develping rating in the area f prfessinal respnsibilities. If a candidate des nt make-up absences, an Incmplete may be given fr the grade, and the time will have t be made up after grades are psted fr the semester. If yu are scheduled t graduate at the end f yur student teaching semester, an Incmplete will prevent yu frm graduating until the fllwing semester. Fr mre infrmatin n incmplete grades, please refer t the current ASU Bulletin. As a student teacher, yur students and cperating teacher rely n yu t be in the classrm every day. 11

12 APPROVED ABSENCE MAKE UP ACTIVITIES: 1-3 Absences: Absences will be made up with additinal days after student teaching. 4-5 Absences: These absences will als be made up with additinal days after student teaching. In additin, candidates will be required t write a supplemental research paper (3 full pages 12 pt fnt) fr each absence ver fur. Mre than 5 Absences: Individual cases will be reviewed by the Field Experience Advisr. The candidate will mre than likely be asked t withdraw frm the prgram r receive an Incmplete. CALENDAR The Student Teaching Calendar is psted n the ASU website t help yu. It has imprtant deadlines that will guide yu thrugh this semester, and it is yur respnsibility t adhere t the calendar and attend required meetings and events. CELL PHONES Cell phnes shuld nt be used fr persnal use when yu are supervising r instructing students. The ringer shuld be n silent, and the cell phne shuld nt be visible. CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES It is yur respnsibility t cntact Child Prtective Services if yu believe that a child s physical r mental health r welfare has been adversely affected by abuse r neglect by any persn. If a student tells yu abut any abuse r neglect, yu are required by law t cntact CPS within 48 hurs. Cntact CPS at r CONFIDENTIALITY Be extremely careful abut keeping infrmatin regarding students private especially when ut in public. N discussins shuld be made t anyne ther than the student and/r parent, yur team, and supervisr. Please make sure all written dcumentatin is prperly put away and kept cnfidential. When cmmunicating via regarding students, never put a student s name in the subject bx, and always be cmpletely factual with n pinins. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK- If yu are ding yur student teaching in SAISD, yu must have a criminal backgrund check run and cleared at the beginning f yur student teaching semester befre ging nt any SAISD campus. The Field Experience Advisr will prvide the infrmatin n hw t cmplete a criminal backgrund check befre student teacher rientatin. If yu will be ding yur student teaching utside f SAISD, yu will need t cntact yur assigned districts Central Administratin building nce yu have received yur placement t make sure yu have fllwed all the rules and regulatins f the district in which yu will be ding yur student teaching. 12

13 CONFERENCES Yu will have fur Effects n Student Learning (EOSL) cnferences during the semester t assess yur perfrmance up t that pint. Each f these cnferences has clearly defined utcmes related t the TxBESS Standards. Yu, yur cperating teacher, and yur university supervisr will participate in these meetings. DISCIPLINE Learn the prcedures fr classrm management in yur cperating teacher s class, and use them. If yu have truble cntrlling behavirs, ask fr help. If necessary, recmmend additins nly after yu have tried their prcedures. Never put a student ut in the hallway unattended. DRINKS & FOOD Student teachers are nt allwed t eat r drink in class. The Texas Public Schl Nutritin Plicy has strict rules regarding fds n campus. It is nt apprved t give students fd (such as reward candy r incentives) in class. EVALUATION Student teachers will be evaluated by the university supervisr and the cperating teacher in many different areas, such as: planning, teaching, assessment, attitude, enthusiasm, classrm management, relatinships with thers, and willingness t participate in areas utside the classrm. The evaluatin f student teachers is based n the Texas Beginning Educatr Supprt System (TxBESS) - the same elements that Texas teachers are evaluated with in the Prfessinal Develpment and Appraisal System (PDAS.) Student teachers will create an nline prtfli in TaskStream. It is a reflective and selective cllectin f lessn plans, jurnal, and artifacts. Fur Effects n Student Learning Cnferences will be held t evaluate yur perfrmance. Yu will be assessed using fur perfrmance levels- Develping, Beginning Cmpetent, Advanced Cmpetent, and Prficient. If yu receive a D in any area, yu will be given an pprtunity t crrect the area f weakness r withdraw frm student teaching. The cperating teacher may use weekly evaluatins t cnvey perfrmance and prgress. Fr secndary student teachers, assessments by ASU departments will be given at the end f the semester t identify perfrmance accrding t cntent standards. Yur final grade will be either Pass r Fail. GPA NOTE - Because grading is n a Pass/Fall basis, yur student teaching grade will nt affect yur grade pint average (GPA) at all; hwever, yu will receive grades in the student teaching seminar blck class and that final grade will affect yur GPA. FAILURES There are things that can lead t a failing grade fr student teachers, such as inapprpriate relatinships with students (language, persnal relatinships, discipline), pr attendance, unprfessinal appearance, lack f planning, inability t cntrl the class, and/r principal request fr remval frm campus. GRADE APPEALS The assignment f a grade in a curse is the respnsibility f the university supervisr and is based n prfessinal judgment. Candidates having a grievance cncerning their grade in student teaching shuld fllw the university Grade Grievance Prcedures. I.D. BADGES All student teachers are required t wear an identificatin badge t schl. JOBS Because f the enrmus cmmitment f time and energy needed t be successful, it is strngly recmmended that yu d nt wrk while yu are participating in the full-time student teaching experiences. These 14 weeks ften require befre and after schl participatin in additin t the time needed utside f schl fr lessn planning and preparatin. Dedicatin t cmpleting student teaching at the highest pssible level is yur number ne pririty. 13

14 LATE ARRIVAL Typically, there shuld be n reasn fr yu t be late fr schl r ther respnsibilities. If the situatin is unavidable, the cperating teacher AND university supervisr must be ntified. Excessive late arrivals may result in a Develping rating in the area f prfessinal respnsibilities. As a teacher, it is crucial that yu arrive early enugh t prepare yur classrm fr the day and greet yur students as they arrive. If yu are nt in yur classrm when students are scheduled t arrive, yu may be held respnsible fr any incidents that ccur. PROCEDURES Learn the prcedures fr yur classrm. The best teachers have a prcedure fr everything, including: attendance/ tardies, lunch cunt, make up assignments, hall passes, emergencies, health cncerns, classrm discipline, and mre. ROUTINES Learn the daily rutines fr the classrm t which yu are assigned by actively bserving the teacher in the classrm. Active bservatin includes walking arund the classrm and assisting students, checking fr understanding, and mnitring student perfrmance. Take initiative, pitch in, and ask hw yu can help. Observatin des nt mean sitting dwn all day. SAFETY #1 pririty f all staff! Be infrmed abut prcedures, and be alert, prepared, and vigilant abut all issues invlving the safety f yur campus. STUDENT TEACHING SEMINAR (BLOCK) CLASS SCHEDULE This is an nline class, and the nly face-t-face meeting yu will have is during student teacher rientatin. SUBSTITUTE TEACHING Angel State University student teachers cannt be used as substitute teachers. Hwever, in an emergency situatin, the student teacher may assume the duties f the teacher fr a brief perid f time in the classrm prvided an adjacent certified classrm teacher supervises and that the university supervisr is cntacted. An emergency substitute teaching frm must be cmpleted and signed by the campus principal. Principals must make every effrt t find a district substitute befre using a student teacher in this capacity. SUGGESTED SCHEDULE FOR STUDENT TEACHING By the end f the first week f each experience, the cperating teacher and the student teacher shuld develp a written calendar/ timeline fr gradual assumptin f teaching respnsibilities by the student teacher. The calendar/ timeline shuld be flexible, and serve as a means f cmmunicatin rather than a guarantee. Bth the student teacher and the cperating teacher must be cmfrtable with the utlined plan. Early planning is essential t allw fr a maximum amunt f full-time teaching fr the student teacher. Suggestins are prvided t help in mapping ut a calendar/ timeline. TEACHING There will be times when yur cperating teacher leaves the classrm s that yu can wrk n yur instructinal and classrm management skills; hwever, the teacher shuld be easy t lcate in case f an emergency. Yur cperating teacher shuld nt be participating in any activities utside the classrm that wuld make it difficult fr him r her t respnd t an emergency in a timely manner (i.e. ff campus). If yu think yu are being used as a substitute withut cnsultatin, cntact yur university supervisr immediately. TExES CERTIFICATION EXAMS All candidates must take and pass at least tw TExES exams befre they can be recmmended fr teacher certificatin. Yu will be required by the State t pass the Texas Examinatin f Educatr Standards (TExES) fr yur teaching field r cntent area (i.e. EC-6 Generalist, Special Educatin EC-12, Histry 8-12, etc.) and the Pedaggy and Prfessinal Respnsibilities (PPR) exam. Sme certificates may require additinal testing (i.e. Special Educatin, Freign Languages). 14

15 Candidates may take their required cntent area TExES exam when they have cmpleted all f their majr cursewrk and received apprval frm the apprpriate department. The cntent area exam may be taken prir t student teaching. When yu are apprved t student teach yu will be apprved t take the PPR exam. If yu plan n taking yur TExES exams during student teaching, please try t schedule them n a weekend s that yu d nt have t be ut f the classrm. If hwever, yu are unable t schedule the exam n a weekend yu will be able t take tw half-day absences fr the purpse f taking yur exams. These tw half-days are nt exchangeable fr ther absences if yu have already taken yur TExES exams. They are nly allwed fr testing. Yu will be required t prvide a cpy f yur testing ticket as verificatin that yu were taking a test. VISITORS All visitrs (including parents wh wish t visit a classrm) must cme by the ffice first t btain a visitr s pass (which requires a driver s license). STUDENT PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PROGRAM GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT TEACHERS These are general guidelines required fr all student teachers. Failure t cmply in a timely manner with these general guidelines will affect the student teacher s final evaluatin. Student teachers will fllw these general guidelines during the student teaching term. All written assignments must be cmpleted n time as instructed by yur university supervisr. LESSON PLANS As emergent teacher candidates, student teachers are expected t fllw the schl s expectatins fr lessn planning. Lessn plans must be cmpleted and apprved by yur cperating teacher. Mst cperating teachers ask fr them by Thursday the week prir t teaching. Yu need t plan extensin activities fr yur lessns. The Texas Educatin Agency (TEA) dictates the time alltted fr subjects during the day, s yu must use the entire class perid fr student learning. WEEKLY TEACHING SCHEDULES Student teachers are required t prvide their university supervisr with a cpy f the weekly schedule fr planned teaching activities using the frm prvided in the appendices. University supervisrs will use this schedule t plan their visits. Include such things as art, library, cmputer lab, recess, etc. If any changes ccur in yur weekly schedule, yu must ntify yur supervisr. Yur supervisr wrks with several ther student teachers and it is frustrating t plan visits based n the schedule turned in nly t arrive t find that the class is in the cmputer lab rather than actively invlved in a math lessn. MASTER SCHEDULE AND COOPERATING TEACHER S SCHEDULE Each student teacher is t prvide the university supervisr with a Master Schedule and Cperating Teacher s Schedule using the 15

16 frm prvided n the ASU website. Include lunch perids, planning times, cnference perids, class meeting times, etc. WEEKLY ASSESSMENTS Weekly assessments may be used by the cperating teacher and university supervisr at any time during the assignment t cnvey the current perfrmance and prgress f the student teacher. The purpse f these assessments is largely diagnstic and frmative and shuld be reflected in a benchmark cnference. They shuld assist all cncerned in identifying the prgress that has been made and identifying thse areas that need attentin and imprvement. STUDENT TEACHING BEHAVIORS AND ATTITUDES Unquestinably, student teaching is a learning experience. The student teacher is t develp prfessinal behavirs that are cnsidered desirable and effective fr helping pupils learn, t fulfill prcedural respnsibilities, and t demnstrate interpersnal behavirs that facilitate cperative and prductive relatinships with thers. DISPOSITIONS Prfessinal attitudes, values, and beliefs demnstrated thrugh bth verbal and nn-verbal behavirs as educatrs interact with students, families, clleagues, and cmmunities. Candidates hair will be clean and well grmed at all times and shall nt bstruct visin. 2. Candidates must wear apprpriate shes at all times. (Flip Flps/ Huse slippers are nt allwed.) 3. All frms f headgear (hats, caps, hdies, bandanas, etc.) are nt acceptable. 4. Shrts are nt permitted. 5. Prper under garments must be wrn and nt be visible. 6. Any attire related t negative grup behavir (gangs, etc.) will nt be permitted. 7. Candidates may nt wear slgan buttns r clthing with inapprpriate r vilent slgans r advertising. (An example wuld be an alchlic beverage r tbacc advertisement.) 8. Visible bdy piercing shall be limited t ear piercing. All ther visible piercings, including retainers r spacers, are prhibited. 9. Over-sized style pants that wuld give the appearance f being baggy r saggy will nt be permitted. 10. Shirts and bluses must be tucked in unless they are shrter in length than the student s extended fingertip. 11. Sunglasses may nt be wrn in the buildings n the eyes, head, arund the neck. 12. Candidates may nt wear unusual cstumes that attract attentin and detract frm the learning atmsphere. This includes unusual hairstyles r hair clring. 13. Tatts are nt allwed t be visible. 14. Hles and/r shredding n jeans/pants are nt permitted. 15. Female Candidates: * Nthing may be wrn that shws/ bares the midriff (frnt r back). * Skirts must nt be shrter than the students extended fingertips. * Divided skirts, hemmed abve the knee, are cnsidered shrts and may nt be wrn. * N spaghetti straps, tank tps r visible under-clthing will be permitted. * All tps must be at least 3 fingers wide n the shulder. * Lw-cut tps may nt be wrn. * Skintight attire is nt acceptable. (This includes bike shrts and spandex.) 16

17 SCHOOL Be sensitive t the standards f the schl and cmmunity; cnduct yurself accrdingly. Make an attempt t intrduce yurself t ther faculty and administratrs n yur campus. Find ut the plicies f the schl, and bey schl regulatins. STUDENTS Shw genuine interest in the students. Get t knw yur students as individuals by learning their names and their backgrunds. Be cheerful and friendly in yur dealings with individuals and grups. Be cnsistent, fair and impartial. Remember, yu are nt there t be their friend, but t be a psitive educatr. The atmsphere yu create can fster a prductive r unprductive learning envirnment, make management and discipline smth r difficult, and set yu up as an effective r ineffective teacher. DISMISSAL Failure t cmply with prcedures and expectatins culd result in dismissal frm the prgram. Here are additinal reasns a candidate culd be dismissed. Inability t place a candidate in a field based setting due t actins within a schl district. Prcess 1. Vilatins addressed in the Dismissal plicy will be frwarded t the Admissin, Dismissal, and Retentin Cmmittee. 2. The vilatin will be dcumented in writing. 3. The dcumented vilatins will be sent t the Directr f Field Experiences. The Directr will ntify the candidate f the cmplaint. 4. Within 10 wrking days, the infrmatin will be given t the Chair f the Admissin, Dismissal, and Retentin Cmmittee. 5. The Chair f the ADR Cmmittee will cnvene a meeting within 10 days f receiving the infrmatin. 6. A decisin f the cmmittee will be presented t the Chair f the Teacher Educatin Cuncil within 40 wrking days f the riginal cmplaint. 7. The cmmittee can request that the candidate present infrmatin. 8. 19 COOPERATING TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES The cperating teacher must be a Texas certified teacher and is required t have a minimum f three years teaching experience. Campus administratrs determine which campus teachers will be assigned student teachers each semester. Often, district administratrs will apprve these cperating teachers. The schl-based cperating teacher s rle is essential and influential in determining the success f the student teacher s teaching experience. As the teacher f recrd the cperating teacher is the rle mdel wh, n a daily basis, will instruct, advise, bserve, and prvide feedback n the effectiveness f the student teacher s perfrmance in the classrm. In this rle the cperating teacher shares pedaggic and supervisry respnsibilities with the university supervisr t create a supprtive learning envirnment fr the student teacher. GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION The Angel State University student teaching experience lasts 14 weeks. The semester is divided int tw rtatins f apprximately seven (7) weeks each. Each ECH-6 and All Level student teachers are assigned tw rtatins with a cperating teacher fr each rtatin. Secndary candidates, 4-8, and 8-12 student teachers may have nly ne rtatin and ne cperating teacher. The rtatins may be in the same schl, r in different schls depending n the level f certificatin and area f specializatin. All student teachers are assigned a university supervisr frm Angel State University. During the student teaching semester, all student teachers are expected t fllw all rules and regulatins that apply t the faculty f the assigned campus. This includes attendance at Prfessinal Develpment Days, unless decided therwise by the schl administratin. Shuld the latter be the case, the student teacher is expected t cmmunicate this t the university supervisr. Student teaching is a fulltime activity fr the student teacher during the semester. The student teacher may nt be invlved in any ther jbs during the schl day. The final grade fr student teaching is assigned by the university supervisr in cnsultatin with the cperating teacher. COOPERATING TEACHER CHECKLIST Things t d prir t the arrival f yur student teacher: Set up a desk/wrkspace fr yur student teacher in yur classrm. Gather pertinent handuts and materials fr yur student teacher, such as the schl calendar, classrm prcedures, classrm management plan, plicies, safety prcedures, curriculum resurces, etc. 19

20 Prepare yur students fr the arrival and rle f the student teacher, particularly issues f student teacher authrity in the classrm. Once yur student teacher arrives: Intrduce him/her t the class, and shw yur student teacher where t sit t start bserving. Mdel classrm rutines and expectatins. Invlve the student teacher in recess, cafeteria duty, faculty meetings, parent/ teacher cnferences, prfessinal develpment, and ther activities that yu d during the schl day. Take the student teacher n a tur f the campus, intrducing him/her t ther staff members. Arrange a time fr an initial rientatin with the student teacher t discuss parking, rutines, lessn planning, prcedures, facilities, schedules, and upcming events. Outline explicitly the duties and respnsibilities yu will assign t the student teacher during the curse f the teaching experience, especially thse that invlve additinal time befre and after schl. Prvide pprtunities fr guided bservatin and a graduated participatin in the teaching prcess, culminating in the student teacher accepting full prfessinal respnsibility fr the class twards the latter half f the assignment. As yur student teacher begins t phase in and teach, prvide feedback, bth written and thrugh discussin as sn as pssible after each teaching event. (Yur university supervisr will ask yu fr feedback regarding the student teacher s prgress, and yu can use this dcumentatin fr supprt.) Set aside a few minutes each day fr a cnference with yur student teacher. Encurage the student teacher t ask questins. Maintain regular cmmunicatin with the University Supervisr, and participate in three-way meetings with the University Supervisr and the student teacher. Track attendance. Student teachers are expected t attend every day. Absences must be made up at the end f the student teaching assignment. If a student teacher misses mre than 2 days, cntact the University Supervisr. If yur student teacher is experiencing any difficulties: Cmmunicate with yur student teacher and give suggestins fr imprvement. Identify and dcument any cncerns abut candidates as early as pssible and cntact the University Supervisr t discuss and implement imprvement/ grwth plans. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: What kind f paperwrk is required? There is minimal paperwrk required.
