Lectures, labratry wrk and demnstratins will enable students t understand nrmal and abnrmal functin f the human bdy and prvide a fundatin fr any future healthcare curse. Integratin f anatmical structure as it relates t physilgy will als be incrprated. Additinal Descriptin: PHGY230 is the secnd half f a tw semester, intrductry human anatmy and physilgy curse that is rganized parallel t the majr rgan systems f the human and fllws the sequence f the text, Anatmy and Physilgy, 6 th ed. by Marieb and Hehn. The curse cntains in depth labratry explratin f each cvered rgan system. PHGY230 is fr students entering health prfessin fields r prgrams f study in which a twsemester (eight semester credits) Anatmy and Physilgy with lab curse is required and fr thse desiring further bilgical sciences study fcused n the human bdy. Develpmental bilgy, histlgy, pathlgy and clinical applicatins/crrelatins will be included when apprpriate. Specific tpics addressed include nutritin and metablism, fluid, electrlyte and acid base hmestasis as well as endcrine, cardivascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratry, digestive, urinary and reprductive systems. Independent and grup learning is required in PHGY230. Student Learning Outcmes The student learning utcmes are as fllws: Identify the cmpnents and functins f the endcrine, cardivascular, respiratry, digestive, urinary and reprductive systems. Apply knwledge f the cmpnents f eukarytic cells and their functins t explain the anatmy and physilgy f the studied rgan systems. Describe the flw f infrmatin within the cell and between cells. Describe the regulatin f cellular activities including cmmunicatin, grwth, divisin, metablism and cellular energy prductin. Describe the tissues cmpnents and functins within each studied rgan and rgan system. Describe the imprtance f hmestasis, its parameters fr the human and the mechanisms used by each f the studied bdy systems t maintain it. Describe hw attempts t maintain hmestasis by individual rgan systems affect the ther rgan systems and prcesses. Identify and describe cmmn pathphysilgy related t the studied rgan systems and its underlying anatmy and physilgy. Demnstrate the crrect use f widely accepted anatmical and physilgical terminlgy. Demnstrate and apply the cncept that anatmical structure and physilgy (functin) are cmplimentary. Apply the abve knwledge t prblem slving situatins. 4 Labs/Lab Quizzes The labs are assigned s that students get practice in researching, analyzing, critical thinking and applicatin f the infrmatin learned in the curse. The labs will demnstrate t bth the instructr and student as t whether r nt the student has a deeper understanding f the infrmatin learned. Several labs will invlve the PhysiEx 9.1 lab manual/sftware. PhysiEx 9.1 is available n the Mastering A&P cmpanin website. All assigned labs are psted in the Drpbx and will be submitted via the Drpbx n yur D2L curse page. Labs will nt be graded but will be need t be cmpleted in rder t take the related lab quiz, thus yur lab grade is earned via the related quiz. Related lab quizzes d nt appear n Quizzes list until the related lab has been cmpleted and submitted via the Drpbx. All labs must be submitted by due date/time fr ne t take the related lab quiz. Late assignments are NOT accepted which means that a student wh des nt submit lab by due date/time will nt be allwed t take the related lab quiz thus lsing thse available pints. Lab quizzes are assigned fr each lab assigned and are used t evaluate yur understanding f the related lab. Lab quizzes are taken un prctred and nline after the cmpletin f assigned lab activitity by specified date. Lab quizzes are accessed via the Quizzes tab n the Cure Hme Page. Lab quizzes will nt shw in Quiz list until related lab has been submitted. Lab quizzes will carry a value f ten pints and will have a time limit f 12 minutes with a 3 minute grace perid. Lab quizzes are NOT grup assignments and are meant t be taken individually. Students will typically use their cmpleted labs t take the quiz. Lab quizzes will invlve questins directly and indirectly frm the assigned labs and will include interpretatin f data and critical thinking. Make up lab quizzes are nt typically allwed. Lecture Quizzes: Lecture Quizzes are utilized t help yu measure yur understanding f sme f the mst imprtant cncepts. They are used t help yu apply the learned infrmatin. Each lecture quiz will cnsist f 10 multiple chice questins and a full value f 10 pints. Lecture quizzes are nt prctred therefre ntebks and textbks may be used. Hwever, please nte that I expect yu t g int the quiz with knwledge. If yu are nt prepared t take the quiz and resrt t lking up all questins, yu will nt have nearly enugh time t cmplete the quiz within the alltted time allwed. Althugh ntes and text are allwed, the majrity f the quiz questins invlve critical thinking and interpreting data/graphs, and therefre they will nt be f much help. The quizzes will help demnstrate t the student whether r nt they have a deep understanding f the cncepts. Make up lecture quizzes are nt typically allwed. (This includes technical issues.) 5 Exams There will be six unit exams and ne cmprehensive final exam. Each exam will be administered via D2L and must be prctred. Students shuld schedule their exams with their prctrs prir t arriving fr exam. Ttal exam cunt fr final grade will be five exams as lw exam scre will be drpped. Exams are used t measure yur ability t learn, understand, cmprehend, and apply basic human anatmy and physilgy. The level f questins that will be used may include: knwledge based, applicatin, cmprehensin, analytical, prblem slving and critical thinking questins. Prper spelling is imprtant fr the health and safety f patients and therefre pints may be deducted fr incrrectly spelled wrds. This plicy extends t all exams, quizzes, labs and all varius assignments. Exams will be made available ver a fur day perid. Unit exams will have a 60 minute time limit while the final will have a 90 minute time limit. Respndus lckdwn will be utilized. All exams must be prctred by an apprved prctr. Whether r nt yu are required t submit a prctr frm is explained as fllws: Students living in Vermillin and surrunding area: Must test at the Vermillin Testing Center D nt need t turn in a prctr frm Must make an appintment at least ne business day in advance Students testing/living in Pierre, Rapid City, r Siux Falls and the surrunding areas: Are nt required t use the BR Testing Centers (thugh I highly recmmend it if pssible) D nt need t turn in a prctr frm if student IS testing at the BR Testing Centers but must USD Testing Center t let them knw which center they are testing. Students testing anywhere else: Must turn in a prctr frm at least tw weeks befre the exam pens. Students are nt allwed t have anything with them during the exam. This includes cell phnes and calculatrs. If a student is seen with any suspect materials while taking the exam, it may be dealt with as cheating in accrdance with the dishnesty plicy. In rder t maintain integrity f exams, exams are nt released t the students. If a student wishes t review their taken exam, schedule a review with yur prctr and supply me with the name (if ther than testing center) and address and phne number f prctring site tw days prir t scheduled review. Review f exam must be cmpleted prir t Saturday after the clsing f the specific exam. (NOTE: Exams are nt released after that time, thus are nt released fr final exam study.) All exams must be taken during scheduled time unless due t extenuating circumstances. Make up exams will fllw the USD Testing Plicy. Lw unit exam will be drpped, thus there will be NO makeup exams. 6 Participatin/Attendance It is expected that ALL assignments (graded and un graded) are cmpleted in full. Any live lecture is nt mandatry hwever students shuld view all recrded lectures. Since I will typically use D2L fr all messages and annuncements, students shuld check in t the curse a minimum f fur times a week. This will help ensure that students d nt miss imprtant discussins, updates, and ther varius messages. Therefre, it is highly recmmended that all lecture recrdings be viewed. *It is nt necessary t view the lectures frm start t finish in ne sitting. Yu can watch part f the lecture and then return at a later time t cntinue t watch. Yu can pick up where yu left ff by simply using the slidemark feature f Cllabrate. Technlgy Requirements The University f Suth Dakta has established minimum technlgy requirements fr participatin in nline/hybrid curses. These are utlined under the Technlgy Supprt and Requirements sectin in the CDE Online Orientatin dcument in the Getting Started widget n the curse hmepage. Aside frm the requirements listed in that dcument, this curse has tw ther tech requirements: 1. This curse makes use f Cllabrate, a web cnferencing slutin, fr the live lectures/ffice hurs, as well as the lecture recrdings. It is recmmended that yu purchase a USB multimedia headset earphnes with a micrphne s that yu can ask questins instead f typing them. These can be purchased nline, r frm yur lcal retailer (Wal Mart, Best Buy, Radi Shack, etc.), fr arund $15 $30 depending n the brand and mdel (Lgitech is recmmended). 2. In rder t take the quizzes and exams in this curse, yu will be required t use the Respndus LckDwn Brwser. This can be dwnladed frm any quiz r survey, but nly needs t be installed nce. That being the case, yu will need t have the apprpriate permissins t install the sftware n the cmputer frm which yu will be taking the exam.
