2 Senior Project Letter to Cape Cod Tech s Learning Community Studies have overwhelmingly shown that students who participate in Senior Project programs develop stronger independent thinking and decision-making skills while experiencing the pleasure of learning something of their own choosing. Their academic skills improve as well, and they are motivated to strive for greater rigor in both academic and technical learning. At Cape Cod Tech, Senior Project is a one-credit graduation requirement, comprised of the following 4 phases: Product, Paper, Portfolio and Presentation. All four components of Senior Project carry equal weight. The Product Phase is a hands-on experience or product related to some aspect of their vocational technical training. Products (and first phase of the Portfolio) are supported and graded by the student s Shop Instructor(s). Students must spend a minimum of 15 hours on their Product. At least 10 of those hours must be completed outside of school time. Products may follow 1 of 2 paths: tangible demonstration of the student s technical skills: student should consider incorporating elements of green technology into their projects (renew, reuse, recycle). community service-based project : where the student utilizes their technical expertise to benefit their community or a non-profit agency. In this situation, the student s project would help people directly or contribute to the health and well-being of the people or the environment of Cape Cod. The second phase is the Research Paper. The research paper requires the student to use specific skills such as written expression, research, organization and time management to produce a paper on a topic related in some way to their Product. Papers (and the second phase of the Portfolio) are supported and graded by the student s English teacher. The third phase is the Portfolio. The Portfolio is considered the paper journey, which follows the process and progress of each Senior Project and will be monitored and graded each trimester by the student s shop/academic teacher. The purpose of the Portfolio is the documentation, record keeping and organization of all phases of the project. The final phase is the Presentation. This is an oral presentation given by the student before a panel of judges. For the presentation, the student explains the learning that occurred during completion of his/her Senior Project. The judging panel will grade the student s presentation. The Presentation phase, as well as the third phase of the Portfolio, is supported by the student s History teacher. A successful Senior Project involves parent and teacher support as well as the student s initiative and self-discipline. By all working together, this can be one of the most rewarding experiences the students will have in high school! Warm Regards, Nancy Knight, Senior Project Coordinator x342 or nknight@capetech.us 2

3 Choosing a Topic for Senior Project Tangible Demonstration or Service Based Project - which is best for YU? What are you Interested in or Curious About? Product: A hands-on tangible demonstration of the student s technical skills that may incorporate renewable energy and green / recycle components. A community service based project where the student utilizes their technical expertise to benefit their community or a non-profit agency. 15 or more hours must be spent on the completion of the Product Phase. 10 or more of those hours must be completed during out of school time. Consider having a mentor to assist you in your efforts. See CCT website for more information. Paper: Research to answer a question, gain understanding of an interesting topic, draw a conclusion or compare and contrast various elements of their topic. You must be able to connect the Product and the Paper to each other. Keep in Mind - Samples of Unacceptable Products: These will not be approved. Fundraisers: A component of your Product could be a fundraiser. Though, the main focus of your Product should be related to your technical area and allow you to demonstrate your technical expertise. PowerPoints: By itself, a PowerPoint is not a product. You may utilize a PowerPoint, that you develop, as part of a larger project idea. Brochures: You may need to create a brochure as a tool or means of sharing information within the larger scope of your Product. However, a brochure in isolation is not an acceptable project. Posters and small non-working models: Again, by themselves, posters and non-working models do not allow a student to demonstrate their technical skills. Students may incorporate posters or models as part of their larger Product ideas. For Early or Summer Products: If a student plans to begin their Product prior to the start of their senior year and has a valid reason to do so, that student must have approval from their technical instructor. For that student to receive approval, the technical instructor must be willing to plan to meet with the student for the first, second and/or final Product Evaluations, depending upon the amount of the Product that will be completed. The technical instructor must meet with the student as they work on their Product to ascertain student progress and to gage the learning stretch and quality of student work. When in doubt, check with your Technical Instructor, English Teacher and/or the Senior Project Coordinator if you have any questions as to the viability of your Product or Paper ideas. Cape Cod Tech requires seniors to consider the safety factor when selecting their project, and to consider an alternative choice, rather than a project involving danger to themselves or others. Senior Project is your opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the technical, academic, and social/employability skills you have been acquiring while at Cape Cod Tech. Your Senior Project should be a learning stretch for you and not part of your shop curriculum. This is your chance to select a topic of investigation that you would like to know more about. We hope you enjoy the journey! 3

4 ~ Example of Estimated Product Cost ~ Complete an Estimated Product Cost for BTH your First & Second Proposals Name: Shop: Suggested Tips: Plan for items you may need to borrow and attach an estimated value for each item. You may also request donated items, but again, attach an estimated value for each item. Donated items from major companies need plenty of lead time and/or official requests on school letterhead. Be sure to plan FAR IN ADVANCE for any potential donations and/or customers. Consider the following potential costs: Specialized Tools to Purchase, Travel Expenses, Tool/Equipment Rental, Software/Test/Publications to Purchase, Course/Training Fees, Certification Requirements, Documentation Costs, Materials. Description of Item # of Items Cost per Item Total Cost Examples: Transportation to and from supply house in Hyannis, 3 trips at 22 miles per roundtrip (3 X 22=66 miles) Hunter time clock PVC 10 footers inch Poly Pipe Hunter Valves Spray head nozzles inch saddles Back Flow Preventer port manifold of 18 gage 5 strand wire Valve boxes Time clock module Total Estimated Cost for your First Topic Proposal: $ List the websites and/or catalogs where you obtained your cost projections.
