4 I have a cgnitive and cnstructivist view f my students learning prcess. I define the cntext and cntent f the learning activities fr my students and then help them negtiate the meaning f the infrmatin with them individually and as a grup. I try t bring current experiences, either mine, theirs r frm sciety and the media int cntext t help frm the basis fr a persnal cnstructin f the subject cntent, and require that the student be persnally invlved with me and each ther in a dialg. Methds include seminar, discussin, wrking sessins, small grups, service learning, etc. Sme nline wrk may be undertaken. Students will d nline and ther research t cmplete assignments and prjects. My teaching philsphy hlds that the graduate students in my classes need t learn t critically analyze histry, current events and future scenaris s that they can wrk at and manage schls, gvernment prgrams and ther fr prfit and nn-prfit rganizatins. This dialg can be written in the frm f tests, jurnals, essays, reprts and research; r verbal discussins, cmmunity service, and infield experience, service learning activities and internships. Students will be evaluated n the quality f this written and active learning prtfli. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: When students have cmpleted this curse they will: 1. Cmprehend, Interpret and demnstrate survey research questins using the literature r client cntacts 2. Write measureable survey bjectives that are rted in the survey research questin 3. Prepare reliable and valid survey items that are related t survey bjectives 4. Design effective survey plans cnsidering instrument aesthetics and apprpriate sample ppulatins 5. Due dates are nt extended if yu are absent frm class. S turn in smething by the due date fr each assignment [even if it is merely a statement saying that yu have nt finished the assignment] because yu can then rewrite and raise yur grade withut any penalty. 8

9 Please always submit a separate statement fr each assignment, and be sure t clearly indicate the assignment number. Due dates are strictly adhered t s be sure t turn in smething when it is due. Rewrites received after their final rewrite date will nt be accepted. Uncmpleted Assignments There are very serius cnsequences fr nt cmpleting every requirement f this curse. If any requirement is nt fulfilled, then a zer (0) is entered fr its cmpnent f yur final grade. S, be very diligent abut cmpleting every curse requirement, n matter hw insignificant it seems. Attendance Plicy Yu are expected t attend all classes and t participate in class activities. This is a graduate level curse that may include bth face-t-face and nline wrk. The face-t-face meetings invlve extensive interactins between yu and yur classmates and between all f yu and me. These interactins cannt be made up at sme later date. The nline meetings, hwever, are designed fr yu t cmplete assignments at yur cnvenience within a specified timeframe. These timeframes are the equivalent f a face-t-face class perid. S if nline assignments are nt cmpleted within the specified timeframes, then yu will be cnsidered absent fr that class perid plus that assignment will be dcked ne letter grade fr being late (refer t Late Assignments abve). If a ttal f three (3) classes r nine clck hurs f instructin r an equivalent share f nline discussin assignments r chat sessins are missed during the semester, yu will be drpped frm the curse, as per Graduate Studies Department plicy. Class Make Up If a class meeting is cancelled due t weather r any ther reasn, we will make it up at a time and place t be annunced, during make-up week (dates). Internet Access This curse requires that yu have access t bth a cmputer and the Internet. These services are available at the cllege centers fr yur cnvenience and use. Yu are expected t use yur OLC accunt and t check it at least every ther day. Assignments and messages will be ed t yu. Yu are respnsible fr making sure that yur OLC accunt is active and that yu knw hw t use it. Be sure t send a cc f all yur messages t yurself s that yu have a cpy f yur wrk. Yu will be attaching Wrd and Excel dcuments in.dc,.dcx,.xls, and.xlsx frmat t messages, s be sure yu are familiar with hw t d this. Cell Phnes, Pagers and Other Electrnic Devices During class time, yu are expected t devte all yur time t curse cntent. Please turn ff yur cell phne, pager r ther such device befre class starts. It is nt respectful t the rest f us in this curse t d these things. Please fllw the Cllege Center rule that says cell phnes are t be turned ff in classrms. If yu are required t use yur cmputer during class time, please use it t d class wrk. Academic Integrity Plagiarism is an ethical vilatin that is nt tlerated at OLC. Academic dishnesty is the taking f an examinatin r the preparatin f papers fr credit wherein the student knwingly represents the wrk f anther as his/her wn; and/r knwingly breaks stated examinatin rules. A student may be expelled and barred frm further classes upn prf in a hearing f academic dishnesty. 9

10 Imprtance f Rules [One Feather, 1974, p. 1] In all times f histry, it has been necessary fr each grup f peple t have rules f cnduct which everyne fllws. The smallest grup has certain ways f gverning itself s that life runs smthly. The same is true f a large natin. In the family, there are rules such as being n time [t] eat, encuraging gd behavir f all persns in the family, and frbidding certain types f behavir. The rules vary frm ne family t anther just as the rules vary slightly frm ne cuntry t anther. The imprtant thing is that it is necessary fr any grup t have rules r laws by which t live. Disabilities If yu have a disability fr which yu are r may be requesting an accmmdatin, yu are encuraged t cntact bth yur instructr and the OLC Crdinatr f Supprt Services ( ) as early as pssible in the semester. LAKOTA PROTOCOL IN THE CLASSROOM In the Handbk fr Graduate Study, the descriptin fr this and every ther graduate curse includes the fllwing sentence: The Lakta language will be spken as much as pssible during class. All f us are nt speakers f Lakta, therefre the curse cannt be cnducted entirely in that language. Nevertheless, we will make a gd faith effrt t incrprate Lakta language int ur classes in a gd manner. The way we are ging t d that is in a manner that is bth respectful f the language and relevant t us as members f the Oglala Lakta Cllege academic cmmunity. The idea f an academic cmmunity ties int the visin f Oglala Lakta Cllege as stated n page tw f this syllabus. The Cllege s visin statement is: Learning Lakta ways f life in cmmunity Wlaklkiciyapi. In ur classrm cmmunity, then, we are ging t incrprate Lakta language in tw standardized and cnventinalized situatins. One is at the beginning f each class and the ther is at the end f each class. Beginning f Class At the beginning f every class we will all shake hands and greet each ther in Lakta. We will use standardized greetings and replies. Thse f yu wh are speakers will have t be patient with the rest f us. Be supprtive, nt critical. And thse wh are nt speakers, yu will have t practice, listen and speak. Be brave, nt shy. This is nt a language curse, s let s stick t a very limited set f greetings and respnses s all f us can participate. These greetings and respnses are the equivalent f the ritualized cnversatin that we all carry n every day in English in similar types f settings. [Greeting] [Reply] Tanyan wacinyanke [ye r yel]. [Han (wmen) r Hau (men)]. Tanyan wacinyanke. Its gd t see yu. Yes. Its gd t see yu. Tnitukta [he (wmen) r hw (men)]? Mawaste. Nis? 10

11 Hw are yu? I am gd. And yu? Taku eniciyapi [he (wmen) r hw (men)]? [Yur Name] emaciyapi. What is yur name? My name is [Yur Name]. During Class There are a number f cmmn wrds r phrases that we might wish t use during classes. Fr right nw, there is just this ne wrd. But if we chse, we may add wrds t this list. Pilamaya. Thank yu. End f Class At the end f each class, we will all shake hands and greet each ther in Lakta: Tksa ake wacinyankinkte. [Han r Hau]. Tksa ake wacinyankinkte. I will see yu again later. Yes. I will see yu again later. S this is the list f wrds and phrases that we shuld be familiar with fr this curse. Remember, this is nt a language class. All we are instituting is a way f incrprating Lakta language int ur classrm in a standardized manner that each f us can cmprehend and practice. It is ne f ur classrm rules, and as Delria (1944, p. 24) states, All peples wh live cmmunally must first find sme way t get alng tgether harmniusly and with a measure f decency and rder. This is a universal prblem. Each peple, even the mst primitive, has slved it in its wn way. And that way, by whatever rules and cntrls it is achieved, is, fr any peple, the scheme f life that wrks. Our class is a small grup. Lets practice the habit f shaking each ther s hand and greeting ne anther in Lakta. Ding s will nt make us mre Lakta, but it will help remind us f where we are and hpefully inspire us t strive fr excellence in ur thughts and wrds and actins. One ther prtcl that we will bserve in ur class is that f each f yu will be asked t share Wksape, r wrds f wisdm and encuragement, with yur classmates. This will be dne at the beginning and the end f each class. This is an pprtunity fr yu t practice yur public speaking in a friendly and supprtive envirnment. These are nt lng speeches. Yu will be asked ahead f time t give Wksape. Yu may decline, but by the end f the curse yu will each give Wksape a number f times. If yu wish t d this n a particular day, please let me knw as sn as pssible. Remember, these prtcls d nt make ur class Lakta. Nr d they fllw precisely the prtcl practiced utside the cllege. But they are an effrt t incrprate Wlaklkiciyapi int ur classrm. Thank yu fr participating and fr supprting these effrts. Nte: Infrmatin cntained in this syllabus was, t the best knwledge f the instructr, cnsidered crrect and cmplete when distributed fr use at the beginning f the semester. Instructr reserves the right t make changes in this syllabus in cllabratin with the class, when pssible, and with reasnable ntice t all cncerned. REFERENCES 11
