Kent Island High School Spring 2016 Señora Bunker Guidelines and Expectations: World Classical Languages Spanish III (1 st. period) Room: (Planning 11:30-12:45) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This Spanish course is a four skills based course which focuses on the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It is designed to reinforce previously learned skills in all four aspects and also expand that prior knowledge. In addition, students will be studying the diverse countries and cultures that speak Spanish. This is a cumulative course in which we will review material from Spanish I and II, and then build upon that material with the subjects outlined in the syllabus. COURSE OUTCOMES: The five national standards of learning a foreign language will be addressed: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. Students will use the language to: comprehend a variety of written and oral sources express themselves in writing and speaking refine and expand grammar skills, including the verbal tenses, reflexive verbs, commands, and the subjunctive develop an understanding of the cultures of Spain and Latin America

The formative assessments are used to show that learning is occurring. The summative assessments will demonstrate that learning has been achieved. The grading policy (see below) explains which assignments are formative and which are summative. Assessments will include classwork and homework, as well as regular quizzes and tests after each unit. Although classwork and projects may sometimes be done in pairs or small groups, quizzes and tests will be done individually. It is also expected that homework be done individually. Projects will be assigned throughout the semester, to be completed both in class and out of class. Most units will include a composition or skit. TEXTBOOKS/MATERIALS: Así se dice 3 (verde) (to be kept covered and brought to class every day) and supplementary materials (provided in class) A three-ring binder

Loose-leaf paper Pens or pencils Red Folder (for your portfolio) Divide the binder into five sections: Ejercicios, Tarea/trabajo de clase, Vocabulario, Gramática, y Cultura. You will be responsible for keeping this binder complete and up-to-date. It may be checked at any time, so be prepared! The only section that may be cleaned out periodically by the student is the Tarea/trabajo de clase section, after unit exams. The Ejercicios section will be collected periodically by the teacher. The other three sections are permanent parts of your notebook. It is recommended you purchase a Spanish-English dictionary although it is not required. Dictionaries are preferred over online translators and will be used in class. CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURES: When the bell rings, you are expected to be in the classroom and in your seat. Get to class on time! Three tardies in one quarter will result in an after school detention. You are responsible for immediately beginning the Ejercicio AKA the warm-up. After this, class will consist of a variety of activities: new material, guided practice, independent practice, closing activity. Homework is written on the board each day. Even if it is not announced in class, you are responsible for copying and completing the assignment. Ask questions if you don t understand. During class, we will often be involved in discussions and oral practice. At these times you will be responsible for paying attention and participating with the class. Class is dismissed not by the bell, but by the teacher. Do not talk when someone else is talking. Do not get up out of your seat without permission. Do not expect to be given permission to go to the bathroom. In order to use the bathroom during class, you must ask permission and fill out your agenda book before Sra. H. will sign it. Make

an effort to speak in Spanish in class. Although English will be used at times (particularly during explanations of grammar), we should all try to say what we want to express in the target language. Some activities will be SPANISH ONLY! Plagiarism is unacceptable. Plagiarism can include lending or borrowing answers for homework, tests, quizzes, or other assignments. This will result in a zero on the assignment, and parents will be notified. This also includes using on-line translation services for an entire assignment. Most times, it is obvious when those services are used and the assignment will be returned as a zero. Do your own work! If you need assistance, I encourage you to seek help as soon as you begin to experience difficulty. A quick question before or after class can often clear up problems. I am available for extra after school help most days from 2:30 until 3:10, but please make arrangements with me for after school help at least a day in advance. Google classroom: Students will use Google Classroom. Students will sign in with their school account using the following code: fne599 HOMEWORK POLICY: Because learning a language is a skill (like learning to play a sport or a musical instrument), it is very important to practice every day. Homework will be assigned most nights during the week and there will be tests after each unit. Try different strategies to learn vocabulary, because what works for one person may not work for everyone. We will discuss and practice examples of strategies in class. I suggest that students take advantage of watching TV channels or listening to radio stations that are broadcast in Spanish. Also, take advantage of opportunities that may come up to practice speaking Spanish in the community, with native speakers or other learners of the language. It can feel embarrassing or make you nervous at first, but as you practice more, it can be very rewarding and fun to actually USE the language.

Students are expected to purchase an agenda book from the school store and bring it to class everyday. Record your daily homework and long-range assignments in the agenda book. GRADING POLICY: Your grade will be made up of five components: Homework=10% Formative Assessments: Classwork/Quizzes=30% Summative Assessments: Tests and Projects=45% Final Exam=15% (cumulative) More on grading: Assignments may not be accepted late. This includes homework, projects, notebooks, etc. It must be ready to turn in when due (not at home, in locker, etc.). However, if you are absent the day an assignment is given, you have 3 days after your return to turn it in. It is your responsibility to acquire the missed work. It will be available in the classroom. If you miss a quiz or test due to an excused absence, you have one week after your return to make it up. You must make arrangements to take the missed quiz or test before school, after school or during lunch (not during class). Correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and neatness are always expected. Tests: may be retaken within 10 school days from the time the test is returned if you score 69% or less. The maximum score for such retests will be 70%. You must come before or after school to retest. Retesting will not take place during class time. The basic rules to remember are: 1. Respect one another. 2. Be prepared for class. 3. Stay on task. 4. Follow directions the first time they are given. 5. Always do your best.

After reading the previous pages, please return this portion. It should be signed and dated by both the student and a guardian as acknowledgement that the expectations are understood. If you have any questions, you may write them on this paper or contact me by phone or (see 1 st page). Thank you for taking the time to read over this material. Sincerely, Sra. Mayra Bunker World Languages Teacher Print student s name Student's signature Date Parent/Guardian's signature Date address of parent/guardian (if applicable-please print) Best phone number to call parent/guardian: (Please indicate if this is home, office, or cell)
