1 PEER ADVOCATE LEADER PROGRAM POSITION DESCRIPTION & APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Thank yu fr yur interest in the Peer Advcate Leaders Prgram (PAL) Peer Mentr psitin with the Office f Student Develpment. Please review the fllwing infrmatin and submit yur applicatin materials by Friday, March 2 nd at 11:59 p.m. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The fficial perid f emplyment will be frm May 18, 2018 thrugh December 15, 2018 with the ptential fr renewal in Spring 2019 pending payrll availability PALs must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA t qualify fr emplyment and must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA during the semester f emplyment. Failure t maintain a 3.0 GPA may result in reduced participatin r dismissal frm the prgram Peer Mentrs are expected t act as university representatives n behalf f The University f Clrad Denver, exhibit behavir apprpriate t the university and the Student Cde f Cnduct, demnstrate excellent student service skills, fully participate in all training activities, and prvide feedback t the Office f Student Life cncerning prgram issues f any kind (persnnel, prgrammatic, etc) Must be a full-time ( 12 credit hrs. per semester), undergraduate student wh is an upper-classman and will graduate in May 2019 r later Must be a student in gd standing with the university PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Must demnstrate a psitive attitude and strng wrk ethic Must be willing t learn, grw, and develp leadership skills thrugh the psitin Must have strng desire t assist students with their persnal and academic adjustment t CU Denver including but nt limited t helping students explre study skills, time management, balance, the imprtance f campus and cmmunity invlvement, engagement, making healthy chices, persnal decisin making, assertive cmmunicatin, cnflict reslutin skills, and identity explratin Must display high level f prfessinalism Must maintain a high energy level and enthusiasm when wrking with students and PALs Must demnstrate pride in the CU Denver experience Must be pen t supprting ther peer mentrs Pssess a cmmitment t wrking with diverse ppulatins, identities, and experiences Must be available fr ALL Peer Mentr time cmmitments (see page 5) 1

2 GENERAL MENTOR RESPONSIBILITIES The Peer Advcate Leader Prgram (PAL) is an pprtunity fr mentrs t fcus and assist first year and upperclassmen students in their transitin t and prgress at the University f Clrad Denver. Attend all trainings, leadership, supervisin, and prfessinal develpment meetings Participate in new student rientatin, cnvcatin, CU 411 and ther relevant student activities Regularly dcument cntacts with students thrughut the semester via a cntact lg Organize and facilitate ne-n-ne meetings with mentees Manage a semester budget f $250-$500 by planning and rganizing scial and academically fcused events fr yur mentees Meet regularly with PAL Crdinatr t discuss persnal gals, updates fr the PAL Prgram as well as reflecting upn yur experiences in leadership and prfessinal develpment sessins Actively participate in ther Office f Student Life & Campus Cmmunity prgramming Organize prfessinal develpment pprtunities and resurces fr peer mentrs PAL mentrs are cnsidered Respnsible Emplyees since in their jb rle as peer mentr they culd be perceived as being in a psitin f pwer where as smene might disclse sensitive infrmatin. Respnsible Emplyees are expected t reprt incidents regarding student cnduct, student cncern, r equity cncerns as sn as pssible. This als includes incidents that ccur ff-campus, incidents that might invlve nly ne f ur campus cmmunity members, AND incidents that are wrd f muth. 3 The First-Year Experience PAL Psitin: psitins available May 2018-Dec 2018 PALs meet weekly with a small grup that is lead by an upper classman PAL. Fr the First Year Experience (FYE) emphasis, PALs are paired with an FYE instructr in rder t supprt a small class f apprximately 25 first year students, wh have registered fr an FYE curse. Specific First-Year respnsibilities include: Assist first-year students with their transitin t CU Denver by cllabrating with a CU Denver FYE instructr/ faculty member and the Directr f FYE Attend the FYE curse at least nce weekly and, at a minimum, meet bi-weekly with yur FYE faculty partner Alng with the instructr, develp a cmprehensive, semester lng schedule f events (semester plan), meetings, service pprtunities and ut f classrm engagement pprtunities fr the identified grup Meet regularly with ther peer mentrs (small grup) t discuss persnal and prfessinal develpment, and t crdinate and plan weekly engagement pprtunities fr students Hld weekly ffice hurs in the PAL Lunge based n yur student schedule Crdinate and facilitate minute ne n ne meetings with each student enrlled in yur assigned FYE curse Present at least ne "skills wrkshp" t the students in yur FYE curse. Tpics can include but are nt limited t: wellness, time management, study skills, r campus resurces Plan and facilitate and attend study grups, r prgrams fr yur assigned FYE student grup while utilizing and tracking a budget f $250-$500 Cmmunicate regularly, effectively, and efficiently with students registered in yur FYE curse Additinal Learning Cmmunity (LC) respnsibilities include: Mentr all students enrlled in the learning cmmunity Attend the FYE curse in the LC, at a minimum Attend ther curse(s) if needed and/r accrding t yu and yur instructr s semester plan Meet weekly with BOTH LC instructrs and include BOTH LC instructrs in any PAL cmmunicatin, planning, events, etc. Other general PAL duties 3

4 The Student Success PAL Psitin: 1-3 Psitins Available May 2018-Dec 2018 Fr the student success emphasis, PALs reach ut t students n academic prbatin, transfer students, ther special ppulatins and students wh request a ne-n-ne PAL. Specific Student Success PAL respnsibilities include: Hld weekly walk-in ffice hurs fr students n academic prbatin and new transfer students Facilitate ne n ne meetings with any CU Denver student wh requests a mentr, students n academic prbatin and/r new transfer students Cmmunicate regularly, effectively, and efficiently with students assigned t yu during rientatin, thrugh summer and thrughut the fall/ spring semester Reach ut t students via phne and Wrk with an academic advisr (if applicable) t create a plan t reach ut t students placed n academic prbatin Wrk with students n academic prbatin t cmplete the Academic Success Plan by prmting timely cmpletin, and by cnnecting students with relevant resurces t have a successful semester Cntinuusly evaluate and cmmunicate PAL s academic success utreach initiatives and help the PAL Crdinatr make decisins fr changes and imprvements mving frward Crdinate at least 3 (three) utreach prgrams fr students during the fall semester Review, evaluate and update guides and prcesses created by previus Student Success PALs Maintain regular cmmunicatin with PAL Crdinatr Prmte student engagement bth by infrming students abut engagement pprtunities and by engaging with thse students Transfer PAL Only: Cmplete additinal Transfer PAL Training during the summer and manage a $3000 perating budget in cnjunctin with PAL Crdinatr Supprt PAL s cllabratin with the Center fr Identity and Inclusin and the Transfer Admissins Center, including being present at sme events hsted by the TAC 4

5 TIME COMMITMENTS/IMPORTANT DATES The summer scheduling ften invlves previus cmmitments, thus we are cmmitted t scheduling meeting times accrding t everyne s availability. Attendance during the fllwing dates is mandatry: Summer Hurs (July- August): 7-10 hurs per week Peer Advcate Leader Welcme & Orientatin: May 18 th, 3-5 p.m. PAL IMTPC Training: All training days are frm 8 a.m. t 5 p.m. Level I- July 13 th Level II- July 20 th Level III- July 27 th PAL/ SGA Retreat: Week f August 6th (vernight event- 2 nights) PAL/ FYS Faculty Breakfast & FYS Training: August 13 th, Time TBA Kick-ff Events: CU Prep Week: August 13 th -17 th Cnvcatin: Aug. 17 th Welcme Week: Aug 20 th 24 th PAL Team Meetings: One Friday per mnth (abut 1 hur each, exact time TBA) August 31 Octber 5 Nvember 2 December 7 CU 411: September 6 th, 3 9 p.m. Rcky Muntain Peer Leadership Cnference: March, TBA (all day cnference) Fall Hurs (average): 8-10 hurs per week 5

6 REMUNERATION Cmpensatin will be at $11.00/hur fr a maximum f 10 hurs/week.
