Wrkshp Overview The 2017 icnference ffers an pprtunity fr the Syracuse University ischl t share insights n pen industry partnerships fr innvatin psitive impact n academic learning utcmes, Hw Syracuse University ischl faculty, staff and students have develped methds and prcesses fr mutually beneficial industry partnerships will be reviewed. Over the years, a number f partnership mdels have been emplyed and adapted t enhance research and learning. The challenges faced by faculty, students, staff, and industry partners in achieving bjectives will be reviewed and shared fr lessns learned. The distinguishing added value f effective pen industry partnerships fr enhancing student learning utcmes will be highlighted. Our wrkshp will walk participants thrugh the uncertain learning jurney f industry partnership frmatin and adaptatin. The wrkshp will prvide key insights int hw t successfully sustain and evlve effective industry partnerships. Finally, clleagues frm the Silicn Valley-based firm VMware, with whm Syracuse University is clsely engaging at present, will share their perspectives n the benefits and csts f partnering with academics, and in particular ischls, in flexible, pen industry partnerships fr innvatin and learning. Several VMware clleagues may jin the wrkshp, in persn, via webcnferencing tls, r recrded vide interviews. Other industry partners may als jin the event t share their diverse perspectives, if the wrkshp prpsal is accepted. 2. We will discuss the rigins f sme f ur key partnerships, the challenges encuntered, and the academic learning prgrams that have resulted. We will include shrt vides frm sme f ur faculty wh may nt be able t physically attend the wrkshp, where they highlight the benefits, and csts, and failures f industry partnerships they have spearheaded. This will enable adequate cverage f the breadth f ischl related academic areas impacted by industry partnerships. After presenting n ur partnership jurney, wrkshp participants will have frm fifteen minutes t ask the nsite team questins and discuss sme f their wn industry partnership jurney insights.

Thrugh these prjects, students cnnect their classrm learning with established and emerging technlgy trends and may interact with industry partner resurces. Partnership-driven prjects have cvered ischl related fcus areas including distributed learning, infrmatin security, data science/big data, wired and wireless technlgies, and mst recently, clud management. The partnerships that we are especially prud f will be discussed. Less successful prjects, and utter failures, will als be shared. Hw were lessns learned applied t increase the success rate f future partnerships? Student engagement is ne f the mst imprtant, indeed fundamental aspects f the pen innvatin partnership prjects that distinguished ur mst successful relatinships. Students will share their views and experiences, and will facilitate wrkshp participant discussins. Partnership pprtunities Sectin 4 Identifying and leveraging the value prpsitin After sharing insights frm past and nging prjects, the wrkshp cncludes with discussin f hw t identify and leverage the pprtunities industry partnerships present. Existing firm relatinships fr internships, c-ps, and future student emplyment ften present the first pprtunities fr deepening industry engagement. We have fund the key t gaining value frm industry partnerships is ging beynd these cmmn relatinships and identifying which firms and industries are already engaging mre deeply with faculty and research centers. These tend t be the best candidates fr mre substantial industry partnerships, because at least sme f the firms emplyees value and are clearly pen t cllabratin with academic and nn-academic entities. It is als imprtant t identify if the university strategic plan encurages specific areas f cllabratin, t help garner institutinal supprt fr aligned partnership pprtunities. Understanding which areas f university expertise are recgnized thrugh federal, state and fundatin grants, can als reveal pprtunities that will attract industry partnerships fr further student engagement, research, and cmmercializatin. We have als discvered that startups can play a key rle in develping partnerships with larger firms based n future market pprtunities. Leveraging virtual netwrks fr reginal, and internatinal cllabratins als prvides unique and valuable pprtunities fr academic learning. 5.
