Students are expected to be back in school by on Tuesday 6 October. Bus Feedback This week, we were very pleased to receive the below from a passenger on the 281 bus. It is always a pleasure to hear about our students exemplary behaviour outside of school. Today I was a passenger on the 281 bus going towards Kingston when it stopped at 3.30 pm to pickup passengers including a number of students from Teddington School. The students' behaviour both in the queue and on the bus was excellent and they were a credit to themselves and the school. 2 Meet Our New Deputy Headteacher How long have you been teaching for? My name is Nigel Hill; I have been teaching for over twenty years. It s a great job and I have enjoyed it very much. What are your first impressions of our school? I think it is a great school. I have been very grateful for the warm welcome I have received from staff, pupils and Governors. The pupils here are polite and respectful and are a great credit to the school. The school buildings themselves are impressive and you can t beat the location. All in all, a great place to work. What is your role within the school? My official title is Deputy Headeacher in charge of Inclusion. I have always been involved in the area of behaviour for learning and I have always believed that pupils reach their potential when there is positive behaviour for learning in the classroom. I see an important part of my job as ensuring that this is the case. I want all pupils and staff to feel that this is a special place to work. If you could sum up your approach in one word what would it be? 100% : by that I mean giving 100% in every aspect of what we do. What gets you annoyed? Disrespect. There is no reason to justify it, or, excuse for it. What are your interests? I enjoy playing golf and I have a season ticket for Crystal Palace Football Club. 3 Dance Evening Auditions This year's Dance Evening is taking place on the Thursday 26 November. This evening is a fantastic showcase of the dance talent that we have at Teddington and includes performances from students in all year groups. A large part of the evening is made up of student's own work that they have choreographed. If students wish to have the opportunity to perform their own work at Dance Evening this year, auditions will be taking place on Wednesday 21 October after school. Students can pick up an audition including all the information from outside the PE office or from the Administrator's office. Beth Reynolds Associate Assistant Headteacher Head of Year 13 Shine Walk Last weekend, Thalia Poaros, 10Y1 and Sasha Rubino, 10S1 took part in the Shine Walk. The girls walked 26 miles through the night on Saturday with thousands of other participants in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Our students battled tiredness, blisters and swollen feet to complete the course and, between them, they raised nearly 1200 which is a fantastic achievement. Well done girls! Beth Reynolds Associate Assistant Headteacher Head of Year 13 Core Information Evening On Thursday 1 October 2015, we had a very successful Year 10 Core Information evening. Parents, carers and students were informed of the changes to the GCSEs in Maths and English and updated on Core and Triple Science. 4 STEM At Teddington School This term has seen the launch of the new STEM Club at Teddington School. The club, run by Miss Banda with the support of Miss Scott (Mathematics specialist), Mr Birkinshaw (Engineering specialist) and Miss Panjit (Computing Specialist) as well as A-Level & KS4 mentors, aims to combine the elements of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Since its inception, STEM has had two projects running on Tuesdays and Fridays for KS3 students to experience learning in a completely different environment. The Tuesday group is currently working on Baking in Science, a program that allows the students to bake a different item each week and research the science behind each bake, producing a report of their research every week. The Friday group has started off with a set of 6 challenges ranging from designing and testing balloon rockets to bath bomb chemistry. As the year progresses, STEM will take on more demanding projects as well as tap into students imaginative minds to explore different ways of tackling technological and scientific challenges. We aim to be part of the nation s STEM network and contribute to enthusing more young people to go into STEM careers. Baking With Science Week 1: Our STEM members investigated the science behind bread making. We looked at how raising agents affected the consistency of bread as well as the role of respiring yeast in the proving stage. Our Club member Anniken Matheson Sollano, 7T1 further explained how the protein gluten differed in various types of flours. Week 2: Butter or margarine: What is the difference? Our Members baked drizzle cakes then discussed why we used margarine instead of butter. They then looked at why stacking cakes needed dowelling rods to distribute the weight of tiers in cakes thus preventing them from toppling over.

5 Testing Balloon Rockets For our first Friday STEM session, our scientists had the opportunity to experiment with balloon rockets flying all over Lab 2. Our members learnt factors that might affect the velocity of the balloon such as friction and balloon type as well as material. After two attempts, Mr Taplin and Millie s group finally cracked the code and a balloon rockets successfully raced across Lab 2. So much fun! 6 Fundraiser For The Sicily Study Tour As a fundraising initiative for the study tour to Sicily at half term, our Year 13 geographers held a Cake Sale on Wednesday 30 September. As it was so successful, a second date has been added for Wednesday 7 October. The event will take place in the Atrium at break time and we are looking forward to seeing many of our students buying our delicious cake for this great cause. If you are able to make a cake to help, please bring them to the administration office on Wednesday morning. Thank you in advance for your support, we hope you enjoy the cakes. 8 Teddington School PTA Update To keep up with the latest PTA news and events follow us on Latest PTA Event A fabulous night was had by all at the 1of1 Fashion Night. A perfect PTA evening; nearly 400 was raised, the Year 11 models did us all proud and we established great links with a local business. Many thanks to Amanda for organising. 11 Dear Families, ELECTION OF A PARENT GOVERNOR FOR THE SCHOOL Teddington School s Governing Body has six Parent Governors who are elected by parents of pupils at the school. There are now three vacancies for a parent governor. As the parent or guardian of a registered pupil at Teddington School, you have the right to put your name forward for election as a parent governor. In order to ensure that the Governing Body has a good breadth of skills we are currently particularly looking for parents with the following governing, finance, PR / marketing and commercial experience Once appointed, the new governor will serve for a period of 4 years, starting on 2 November The Governing Body plays an important strategic role in the life of the school and currently meets three times a year. In addition, there are a number of sub-committees, which focus on different responsibilities such as teaching & learning, students well-being, attendance & behaviour, and resources etc. Governors are expected to make a commitment to the role by attending each meeting of the full governing body and by joining at least one of the sub-committees, which currently meet once a term. Teddington School is at an exciting time in its development, with the appointment of a new Headteacher in 2014 and the opening and development of the Sixth Form. Being a school governor is a rewarding experience and there is plenty of support and training available from within the governing body and from external agencies. If more than three nominations are received, a secret ballot will be conducted, and voting papers will be sent to all parents. If you would like to propose another parent to serve as a parent governor, the parent in question should complete the nomination form after you have discussed this possibility.
