1 Earl Grey Phone Earl Grey Web Site: Earl Grey School February, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, Just a reminder to any parents interested in attending our Gr. 7 & 8 Open House, we will be meeting in the library on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. As we move forward, it will be important to keep up our momentum with good school enrolment for the coming year. At the time of writing this, we have 240 students, a substantial increase over last year. We will also be having an Nursery Open House on Wed., Feb. 17, from 9:15 10:15 a.m. Kindergarten will be available to see by appointment. We already have 18 students registered for our full day Kindergarten! It will again be capped at 20 students. We are currently taking registrations for our Kindergarten Spanish Bilingual program, but the newsletter will have to be reproduced before I will know a final outcome. We had a good turnout at our Jan. 20 Open House, and thanks to Kathy Heppner for helping with both this meeting and with our Kindergarten Hearing Screening. Last month we had a variety of interesting activities for students including M.T.Y.P and the symphony. Ahead this month is our Winter Carnival for K-4 on Feb. 19, our Gym Riot for Gr. 5-8 on Feb. 24 (a favourite amongst students), as well as our Ojibwe Language Evening session that same night from 6:00-7:00 p.m. We had a great turnout last month for our session on Beading thanks to Ms Tattersall and Mrs. Smit-Beiko for arranging this! The students continue to do well in basketball and dance club and intramurals. Thanks to Mr. Garton, Mrs. Appolloni, Ms Hamulka, Ms Merasty and Mr. Armstrong for coaching. 2 My name is Zach. I am in Grade 6. This past December, I decided that I wanted to do something to help others. S0, I had a blanket drive for the homeless people of Winnipeg. I first created a flyer and then went door to door in the community collection donation of blankets and winter clothing. My outcome was 72 blankets, 15 sweaters, 20 jackets, 2 pairs of boots and 31 hats. Scarves and gloves totalling 140 items. All of these items went to Siloam Mission, a homeless shelter. I hope that what I did will encourage others to do the same. EARL GREY SCHOOL INFORMATION EVENING FOR JUNIOR HIGH THURS., FEBRUARY 4, at 7:00 p.m. 3 rd FLOOR LIBRARY Earl Grey School is holding an information meeting regarding Gr. 7 & 8 programs for on Thurs., Feb. 4, at 7:00 p.m. We have an all-girls class and an all-boys class for all of the major subjects, with students mixed for options. We are hoping to provide both French and an Aboriginal language as options for next year. We are able to provide some advanced programming as necessary and we also provide a small school environment with help for those who need it. 3 February Gym Shorts January, February, and March always seem to be the longest stretch of the year (or at least the coldest), but February cold also brings with it some exciting opportunities for the older students; extra-curricular basketball is in full swing and badminton and broomball get introduced during physical education classes. The elementary students will participate in badminton lead-ups and skipping during the coming weeks. Of course, winter wouldn t be complete without our annual winter carnival and gym riot. The K- 4 winter carnival is February 19 th in the afternoon (weather permitting) and the grade 5-8 gym riot is on February 24 th in the afternoon. Finally, I would like to remind parents and students that proper clothing and footwear are necessary for safe participation in all physical education activities. Winter boots pose many safety hazards for student s feet: slipping on the floor, twisted ankles, or tripping problems (for themselves or others), so please help ensure that your child has a pair of running shoes with them at school. Have a great February! Did You Know? 87% of Canadian children and youth are not meeting Canadian guidelines for daily physical activity (Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute, 2008). On average, an inactive person spends 38% more days in hospital, uses 5.5% more family physician visits, 13% more specialist visits, and 12% more nurse visits than an active person (Sari, 2009). 26% of Canadian children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 are overweight or obese; 8% are obese (Sheilds, 2004) and that a high majority of obese children remain obese into adulthood (Freedman, 2000). Over the past 25 years, overweight/ obesity rates of adolescents have more than doubled while obesity rates alone have tripled (Statistics Canada, 2005). the present generation of youth will be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents (Olshansky, 2005) hp:// Page 3

4 I Love to Read Month With February being one of the coldest months of the year here, it is a great time to read! During I Love to Read month, here at Earl Grey we like to immerse ourselves in reading and writing activities that celebrate and promote literacy. We are focusing our activities during the week of Feb Some of the activities include a daily D.E.A.R (drop everything and read), a school-wide Read Around, Name that book competition during morning announcements, and on Friday, Feb. 12, everyone is encouraged to dress up as a character from a book. We also love having volunteers come to the school to read to students. If you re able to volunteer, please contact the office at , or Mrs. Sawatsky at rsawatsky@wsd1.org. Ojibway Language Speaker Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, February 24, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the library, we will have a representative from the Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre come to do a presentation. This is a learning opportunity to check out one of the more widely spoken Indigenous languages in Manitoba and Canada. It has been called Saulteaux, Ojibwe, but among original speakers it is called Anishinaabemowin. Discussion will be around the differences and similarities with other languages, as well as words from Anishinaabemowin that have been incorporated into the English language. Come out and enjoy! All students, parents, and family members are welcome to attend. Please call the school to let us know if you are coming so we can plan for a light dinner.
