We look forward to fostering a relationship with you during your high school journey. We will be there to push you, challenge you, and support you as you strive for excellence on your way to college/career. Please use this handbook as a guide for 9 th grade, we have provided the most pertinent information that your child will need to adjust to high school. We would like to invite you to Freshmen Orientation Thursday August 20, 2015 at 6pm. We hope you will join us for a sneak peak at NTHS before the school year begins. As the Freshmen Coordinator, myself and the Freshmen Team will be guiding you and your child in their journey through High School. As your child learns the high school ways they will also be preparing for the years beyond. We as a team look at the freshmen year as the greatest opportunity to inspire them to work and strive to do their best in school. We believe that students should a have a voice in their learning in order to follow their dreams of success in either college or career, we, as a team (teachers, school support staff, students and families), must lay the foundation in 9 th grade. 5 Homework Students will generally have homework 2-3 times per week per teacher, EXCEPT for Math and English, Students get homework EVERY NIGHT. Homework is a meaningful review/preparation of classwork. It is not to be disregarded. Many times Homework will be addressed and used in class as part of their classwork grade. Please encourage your child to do their best and hand it in on time, as we do not accept late homework. Students who are absent, and have handed in the correct paperwork will receive a note from the office, only then will they receive all missing work., with a renegotiated due date. All students are required to record their homework, depending on the class, they may take a picture of it, write it down, add it to a calendar, whatever is most effective for them, but it must be recorded daily. Physical Education Uniforms All 9th graders that are enrolled in PE Fitness Foundations are expected to change into their PE Uniform in order to participate in the the course. PE Uniforms are $25, and include NTHS shirt and NTHS shorts. Uniforms will be sold at Freshman Orientation, Back to School Night, and in your child s PE classes. We accept cash or money order only. 6 Freshman Star Requirements STAR Student Wall of Fame Students earn their teacher nominations by: Responsibly coming to class with homework completed. Treating classmates and teachers with Respect. Coming to class prepared with pens, pencils, binders, and agenda books. Displaying a positive attitude. Working collaboratively with others. Avoiding all office referrals. Working to their greatest potential All students have an opportunity to be nominated for Quarters 1, 2, 3 and 4. Students who maintain their star status into the 4 th Quarter will be invited to our special celebration. Freshman Orientation On Thursday, August 20th starting at 6pm in the auditorium will be Freshman Orientation for all incoming 9th grade students. All 9th grade students are encourage to attend along with their parents. Freshman Orientation is a crucial event that will help ensure your students success at the beginning of the school year. Please mark your calendars now!

7 Locker Information Each student will be getting a locker for their belongings along with a gym locker for their PE belongings. Students should not share their locker nor combination with other students. Once the combinations are given out for their school locker and PE locker, students are expected to remember them. Please see the steps below how to open a locker at New Town!

8 9th Grade Non-Negotiables 1. No Late Homework 2. 1 or 2 Bathroom Passes Per Month (depending on teacher) 3. No Headphones OR Cell Phones (unless teacher instructs for classwork) 4. No Food or Drink in class (except water) We will be sending out updates about what is taking place with the 9th graders along with important information throughout the school year. 9 Student Discipline Every student is expected to come to school on time, ready to learn. We expect all students to behave in all classes or a consequence will be given by that particular teacher (see the teacher s syllabus). If this is an ongoing issue, then a required parent conference will occurred to come up with a solution for the success of the student. Please remember that the academic success of your child along with all students at New Town is our first priority. We can not and will no tolerate a student that disrupts other student academic success. Both students and parents will be required to review the BCPS Student Handbook along with signing off that they understand the rules, procedures, and consequences in all BCPS schools. 10 Titan Code of Conduct Student Code of Conduct Baltimore County Public Schools system expects all students to put forth the best efforts during the educational process. To accomplish this, students must recognize their individual responsibilities, and they must behavior in accordance with BCPS Student Code of Conduct, policy Attend school daily unless there is a lawful purpose for being absent. Engage in learning activities. Bring to school only those items and material that are appropriate and for educational purposes. Demonstrate positive behavior and language and respect the person, civil, and property rights of others. Accept responsibility for their actions and education while abiding by established BCPS policies, rules, and school procedures. The Code of Conduct standards for school campuses shall apply to all off-site sponsored activities. School personnel will effectively deal with students behavior inhibit their own education or unduly hinder others form learning. Teachers and schools with be given reasonable support and assistance to teachers with respect to the maintenance of control and discipline in the classrooms. Students who demonstrate inappropriate behaviors are subject to discipline that may range from staff/administrative responses to expulsions according to the procedures outlined in the Board Policy and Superintendent s Rule School administrators have the authority to review and assess each individual situation and determine, if any, the type and number of interventions and supports to use prior to any disciplinary action being taken.

12 A/B Day Schedule Please see the A/B day schedule for the school year. Please remember that no matter what, this schedule does not change for any reason. For example, if we are closed on an A day, then the schedule does change to make up that A day. This schedule is set in stone so please mark your calendars!

14 BCPS One We are excited to announced that BCPS One has a new look! Please see below on where you are access your child s grades. All parents should have their own BCPS One login in name so they can check their child s grades. Teachers will update grades biweekly or soon. 17 Freshman Study Hall Every Thursday from 2:30pm-3:30pm in the Library, we offer Freshman Study Hall for our 9th grade students. Students are encourage to attend in order to get extra help in their classes. Also, computer and printing access will be available for students that need it. Coach Classes Every teacher at New Town offer coach classes for their students if it is before school, after school, or during lunch. Coach class is offered for the students to get additional assistant if needed along with make up any missing work they missed when they were absent. Please see the teacher s syllabus the first week of school to see when your child s teacher s coach classes are!
