2 The English Faculty The English Faculty at Farlingaye High School consists of a hard working, lively and very friendly group of teachers. We work together as a team, sharing good practice, and offering support when it is needed. Any new member of the team who is willing to share ideas and make a positive contribution will be made very welcome and will enjoy working with us. The school and the faculty aim to provide effective support through an induction programme tailored to meet your needs. We enjoy good facilities in the languages block, with data projectors in each room, three interactive whiteboards and a suite of computers and laptops. We run a programme of extra-curricular visits, including theatre visits to support drama texts studied at all key stages, and plan other events to enrich the curriculum. We would welcome a colleague who can contribute further to these opportunities to enrich the curriculum for all students. Support and praise systems are well established in the faculty, with mutual professional support and the effective backing of LT on a whole-school basis. NQTs and experienced teachers alike would be well supported by colleagues at all levels as they join the English Faculty at Farlingaye. 3 ENGLISH FACULTY STAFF Rebecca Jermy Rebecca is Head of Faculty having re-joined the school in 2014, and is in her tenth year of teaching. Laura Crossley Laura is second in English, having trained at UEA. Laura mentors trainees and is also Assistant Year Learning Coordinator for Year 9. Currently on Maternity leave. Rebecca Spurling Rebecca is in her second teaching year having trained with us in She has responsibility for A-Level English Language and is our literacy link person. Stacey Deverson-Dean (PT 0.6) Stacey is our English GCSE co-ordinator. She is in her ninth year of teaching, having started here as an NQT. Alice Silvester Alice joined us in September 2014 from teaching in Hertfordshire. She is in her fourth year of teaching and currently has responsibility for GCSE English. Kerensa Carrick (in school for 0.6 with o.4 currently for ITT Training) Kerensa is the school s Professional Tutor with oversight of all ITTs and NQTs. Kerensa is in her ninth year at the school and previously taught at Copleston. She also provides training for ITTs in the county. Toby Read Toby has taught at the school for 15 years and is a busy Year Learning Coordinator. He is currently responsible for Year 9. Jackie Montague Jackie is a Drama specialist but is in her ninth year at Farlingaye teaching English. She combines the two subjects in the transition project for Year 6 students that she runs annually. Bev Barnett (PT 0.5) Bev has taught at Farlingaye for a number of years and, having taken a break to pursue her writing of children s books, she now teaches mainly Sixth Form classes. Lucy Sharpe (PT 0.8) Lucy is in her ninth year of teaching here at Farlingaye. Starting maternity leave in February Teresa Seals Teresa also trained at UEA eight years ago alongside Laura and is our SEN link person. She is also a mentor to our trainee teachers, and assistant to Kerensa.

4 Matt Tighe Matt joined us four years ago having previously taught in Thailand. He is our Film Studies Co-ordinator and resident technology whizz. Karen Killeen Karen is an experienced teacher who joined us in January 2015 on a temporary basis. Lucy Holland Lorna is an experienced teacher who joined us in September 2015 on a temporary basis. She previously taught drama at Holbrook. Pamela Mardle Pamela is an NQT. She worked here as a 1:1 tutor and trained here last year also. We were delighted when she was been appointed to a permanent post. Carys Thraves Carys is also an NQT and trained with us last year. Again, we were delighted when she was appointed to a permanent post. Ellie Rudge-Buchanan Ellie is our 1:3 tutor. She joined us four years ago to support borderline students in Year 11. Lisa Dale Lisa is the faculty administrative support. She is an incredibly important member of our team, producing wonderful displays and supporting all of our administrative tasks.

5 Our aims as English teachers: VISION OF THE FACULTY 1 To help students to become effective communicators through speech and writing, with the ability to use language creatively and accurately; 2 To increase students appreciation and knowledge of the English language and help them to enjoy the rich diversity of its literature, past and present; 3 To encourage the habit and enjoyment of personal reading; 4 To help students towards being independent and self-critical in their studies; 5 To engage students as citizens with the ability to explore and understand social issues explored in literary and non-fiction texts; 6 To share professional expertise and be mutually supportive as colleagues. ENTITLEMENT Students experiencing lessons in this faculty are entitled to: 1 A full programme of study, incorporating the demands of the National Curriculum; 2 Well planned, well resourced, and well-paced lessons which incorporate a variety of activities; 3 Differentiated work appropriate to their needs, as well as tasks which cater for different learning styles; 4 A positive learning environment, including stimulating display, where any examples of poor behaviour are dealt with using school systems; 5 Work to be marked regularly as part of an ongoing process of verbal and written dialogue which enables them to understand how to progress; 6 Praise for their achievements, using a variety of methods to communicate their successes to others; 7 Sensitive handling of issues and respect for differing opinions; 8 Teachers whose love of literature, language and learning is infectious!

6 CURRICULUM Key Stage 3 All KS3 students have four periods per fortnight of 100 minutes. In Years 7 to 8, we teach students in their mixed ability groupings. Year 9 students are grouped into higher and intermediate level classes. We work closely with the Learning Support Faculty and provide in-class support for classes as appropriate as well as withdraw some students for skill-specific workshops. The aim is that all students should receive full, mainstream access to the curriculum, with differentiation as appropriate. Students complete a series of extended homework tasks throughout the year that encourage the students to be more independent in their learning. Key Stage 4 In Years 10 and 11, we operate a three-tier banding system, in which all students prepare for IGCSE English Language (Cambridge) and GCSE English Literature, (AQA A); some weaker students study AQA IGCSE English Literature. From September 2015 we are studying EDUQAS English Language and AQA English Literature. SEN and internal faculty support are provided, especially to the smaller Foundation and Intermediate groups. We are sensitive to the varying nature of particular year cohorts and adapt our grouping patterns each year to provide the best learning environment for our students. Students have four 100 minute lessons per fortnight in Year 10 and five in Year 11. Homework is set weekly in accordance with whole school guidelines. Sixth Form English is a very popular and successful subject at post-16 study; nearly one hundred and fifty students take either English Literature (WJEC) or English Language (AQA B; WJEC from September 2015). Students have six 100 minute lessons per fortnight and are taught by two members of staff who divide the teaching of the course according to their expertise. In 2014, we added A-Level Film Studies (WJEC) to our portfolio and we are encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by the students and results at AS in This year, we also deliver Creative Writing (AQA) but will not continue with this in 2016 due to the government stopping it as an A level course. In addition to advanced levels of study, we offer an enhanced GCSE course for students wishing to re-sit the English qualifications in either November or June.

7 ACCOMMODATION AND RESOURCES We are based in a purpose-built block, which we share with the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty. We currently occupy eleven classrooms and in addition have two group rooms, a number of stock rooms and a Faculty Team Room. There is an open area which can be used for break out sessions or drama activities and a suite of computers for class use. All areas are well furnished with ample space for exciting display. More display boards are situated in shared areas and we are very proud of the high quality of students work which is showcased in our faculty so well by teachers and Lisa Dale. All rooms are equipped with data projectors and we have three interactive whiteboards. The block has wireless access for use of laptops in the team room and classrooms. Administration computers are situated in the team room. In addition, a range of still and video cameras are available for class use. We have a good book stock, including an extensive collection of texts to support A level students. We encourage staff to sign up for their texts at the start of the year which allows us to share sets of books effectively we do protect some texts for particular ability groupings and allow new staff first choice! The English Faculty works closely with the librarian, Sarah Mason, to enrich the curriculum and encourage private reading. Computers and work spaces are available in the library for classes to use or for Sixth Form private study. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES The English Faculty offers a range of extra-curricular opportunities. Pam works with our gifted and more able students to publish Snippet our school magazine which can also be viewed on-line. We also support a reading club where sixth formers listen to younger students read and help build their confidence. We run homework clubs and students are often entered for writing competitions. Alongside these, we organise trips to the theatre to see live productions and Shakespeare plays broadcast by the RSC. Film Studies students also attended the Aldeburgh Film Festival for the first time this year. Towards the exam season, we run revision sessions for all A level and GCSE subjects and we frequently offer individual support and guidance to students in need of extra confidence.

8 EXAM RESULTS AND PERFORMANCE The school is a high achieving establishment and the faculty consistently achieves good results across the three key stages. Our major focus is upon boys achievement especially at GCSE for C grade students, the achievement of weaker students and narrowing the gap for disadvantaged students. 10 THIS POST FULL TIME PERMANENT TEACHER OF ENGLISH (MPR) This post is for full timeenglish post, required from September The person appointed will be assured of considerable support; we are a very successful, enthusiastic, hardworking faculty who are keen to share ideas and the principle of mutual professional support is paramount. We are fortunate in having a good catchment, with supportive parents. The LT and pastoral structures are very effective and consistent. All new staff are offered a mentor and we operate a line management system with the Head of Faculty for curriculum matters and the Head of Year for pastoral matters. All staff are ultimately responsible to the Headteacher. The following taken from the job description for a main scale teacher. We apologise if it sounds a bit formal, but it does show what is expected. The general responsibilities of an MPR post include: to teach as directed by the Headteacher; to work at the direction of the Headteacher and the Head of Faculty to enable the efficient delivery of the curriculum identified through Schemes of Work and in line with the National Curriculum; to promote attainment at the highest level of all students through effective teaching; to maintain accurate and appropriate records of students learning and achievements in line with other schools and faculty agreed policies; to regularly set and mark homework, classwork and coursework in line with the agreed school policy; to write regular reports to parents in accordance with the agreed school policy; to provide subject information to parents and attend parents meetings and respond to parents enquiries as required by the Headteacher and Head of Faculty; attend Open and Information Evenings as required by the Headteacher within the agreed school s time budget allocation; attend appropriate meetings and in-service training within the agreed school s time budget allocation; to undertake faculty responsibility as reasonably directed by the Head of Faculty; to maintain in good order teaching room/area and resources for learning, including text books, student materials and equipment; to promote and celebrate achievement by students through the implementation of the school s rewards policy and effective use of display; to maintain effective discipline through implementation of the school s agreed procedures; to take part in the school s appraisal scheme; to inform Head of Faculty or LT of concerns that may affect Health & Safety of school population; to implement all agreed school policies.

11 All new staff will be tutors and will undertake the following: to attend year team and other relevant meetings; to act as a form tutor, where required, thereby following the agreed procedures laid down in the School s Pastoral Care and Guidance document (relevant section attached); to be available for the marking of registers; to promote the attainment of all students within the relevant tutor/year group; to maintain effective discipline and the agreed uniform code through implementation of the school s agreed procedures. LESSON If you are invited for interview you will be asked to teach a lesson. Timing: Students: Topic: 40 minutes Approximately 25 Year 7 or Year 8 students we will confirm prior to interview. Teach students a poem of your choice, focusing on the use of language. The lesson will be taught in a standard classroom with whiteboard and data projector. DVD equipment can be made available as can a laptop and audio equipment. We will reimburse reasonable amounts of photocopying, etc. We can also arrange for an interactive whiteboard to be used if needed.
