1 OPTIME Monday 29 th January 2018 RECEPTION: STUDENT ABSENCE LINE: DEAR PARENTS & CARERS... B y the time you read this, the secondary school league tables will be out. We are, of course, pleased with our place on this table, but we think that there is a danger of secondary schools being compared in a one dimensional way. Exam results and measuring what you can weigh seem to have dominated the education headlines in recent years. The College is doing so well on this score, that a few people seem to think that it must be what we really care about (because we score highly). We will be working hard this term to let you know about the real ingredients of our success, and will start with the following five facts. We will be asking you to tell other people about this (if you would like to). On the topic of life beyond exam results, we will be opening our doors to potential Air Cadets on 7 th February. This will complement the emphasis we have put on outdoor education, and I really look forward to seeing how this area of the school develops. We will continue to focus upon the things that we value. We cannot always measure what we value and, furthermore, the farmers amongst you will know that you do not fatten a pig by weighing it. The five facts that we will display in Reception this term are: LITERACY HAS BEEN PIVOTAL TO OUR SUCCESS: * 4,636 books have been read so far this school year. WE BELIEVE THAT KNOWLEDGE BUILDS EXCELLENCE: * For the last three years our GCSE results have been amongst the best in the region. WE BUILD CONFIDENCE: * Our Ten Tors teams walked 45 miles quicker than most people can run. * Our Year 10 Drama pupils recently performed Shakespeare to an audience of over 300 people in a professional theatre. WE REWARD EFFORT: * Our Scholar Awards and Pupil of the Month awards encourage EFFORT in all subjects. Mike Johnson Executive Headteacher REPRESENTING NORTH DEVON AT COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS T he Chulmleigh cross country minor girls team, Sophie Wren, Lucy Webber and Lucy Kelly from Year 7 and junior boy, Tristian Rickard from Year 9, went to Stover School in Newton Abbott, to represent North Devon in the Devon Schools Cross Country Championships. It was a proper cross country course, with plenty of mud, and by the end of the race we were covered. We all ran well and it was great fun. There were many competitors and lots of different schools from across the county. It was great to be part of an amazing event. Sophie Wren LEARN TO CODE!! 2 GREAT RESULTS AT THE BADMINTON COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS! T hree of our badminton teams travelled to the County Championships last Wednesday. The KS3 boys team came first, winning all six matches, and will now go on to compete in the South West Championships! The KS3 girls team fought very hard to be placed second, losing only one match, and the KS4 boys team had to compete against Year 11 boys, achieving seventh place. Well done to everyone who took part against very tough competition, and good luck in the South West Championships to the KS3 boys team! FRENCH EXCHANGE TRIP MAY 2018 H aving sadly lost our partnership with a school in Beaugency, due to circumstances beyond our control, we have worked very hard to establish a new contact with a school in France. We are convinced of the benefits to our pupils of providing an opportunity for them to mix with French pupils and to experience their day -to-day lives alongside them. We are opening the Exchange to Year 8 and Year 9 pupils who will be matched with a French pupil of similar age and interests. Once we know the trip will go ahead, pupils will be able to correspond with their pen-friend by prior to the visit. HISTORICAL FICTION COMPETITION FOR YEARS 7, 8 & 9 T he History Department is organising a very exciting writing competition for Years 7, 8 and 9 which includes writing a piece of historical fiction, which can be about any individual or time period. There must be historical accuracy of the time period you have chosen, but elements of creativity are encouraged. Some students have spoken to us about including stories from a personal background, such as experiences of Great Grandparents during WWI, which is a lovely way to honour their own history. The choice is up to you though so give this competition a go! You could be in with a chance of winning the Historical Association s prize of 25, and becoming the nation s best junior historical fiction writer! The deadline is Friday 4 th May, when the department will choose the best three entries and send them off to the History Association in London. Please ensure that all uniform is clearly labelled. Lost property will be kept for a short period in either the Head of House room, for items left in the main site, and in the sports hall for items left in that area. It is the responsibility of students to collect their lost property. Any items that are not collected within a reasonable timescale will be distributed for charitable purposes. I sobel Budd, Rachel Edworthy, Elana Evans, and Coco Fifield all gave their time and energy to raise money for Rays of Sunshine, a charity that provides experiences for chronically ill children so that they will have great memories to recall. The girls put together an excellent and informative assembly that they gave to the whole of KS3. This was followed up with a fundraising cake sale, with cakes provided by the girls and others who had been inspired by their assembly. Cakes were enthusiastically consumed at break and lunch time, resulting in 65 being raised for the charity. Well done girls! Click here for more information.

4 TEN TORS & SILVER DofE DAY WALK 4 W e had an excellent training day out on Dartmoor for our Ten Tors and Silver DofE groups this weekend. There were VERY challenging conditions underfoot, and a strong headwind for a large part of the day, but all four teams made excellent time, despite full rucksacks, and completed their various routes within around half an hour of each other. The Year 9 teams were shadowed by the adult leaders, and their performance left us confident that they re ready to go it alone on the next walk. We have some very good navigators in the group! The Year 10 and 11 teams were not directly supervised, but took on the challenge with no difficulties at all. All in all, it looks like all our participants are ready for something a little more challenging on the next training walk... Well done, everyone!
