2 year s coordinating principal for this event. The festival is open to elementary school aged children in grades 3, 4 and 5 attending Honolulu District public schools. Approximately 400 students will share performances in poetry, choral reading, storytelling and oral interpretation of published literature before peer audiences. The students are adjudicated by a panel of judges who will focus on each student s introduction, delivery (clarity, expression and poise) and conclusion. JPO ANNUAL FIELD DAY COMPETITION Seventeen Lincoln School Junior Police Officers (JPO s) participated at this year's JPO Annual Field Day Competition. It was held for the first time at the Honolulu Zoo on Friday, April 19, The JPO captains did their best to lead their squads. Our JPOs scored an admirable 99 points out of 100. If you did not complete and turn in the projection letter for your child, please do so immediately. YEARBOOK PRE - ORDERS Yearbooks are here! If your child ordered a yearbook, he/she will receive it directly from their homeroom teacher on Monday, May 6 th. In addition to this year s yearbook, there will be an insert of additional pictures from May Day, which will be distributed once it arrives. If you are still interested in ordering a yearbook, please come to the office to purchase one. There are only few extra copies that can be purchased on a first-come, first-served basis. 4 Children who will be 5 years old on or before December 31, 2013, may enroll in kindergarten. Early registration helps the school plan for this important step in your child s education. If your child is of age, you will need the following forms to register him/her for Kindergarten: 1. Completed School Registration Form (available at the school s office) 2. PAUOA ELEMENTARY SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM Pauoa Elementary School is offering a Summer School Program starting on June 3, 2013 and ending on July 12, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. If you are interested, please stop by the office and pick-up an application. ADULT SUPERVISORS Like working with kids? This may be the job for you. Adult Supervisors are in charge of supervising students as they come in for lunch and as they go out for recess. Work hours are from 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. daily. The salary is $8.00 per hour. If you are interested, please feel free to come to the office and pick up an application. CLASSROOM CLEANERS Interested in cleaning classrooms after school? Work hours are from 2:15 4:15 p.m. (Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.) and 12:30 2:30 p.m. (Wed. only). The salary is $8.00 per hour. If you are interested, please feel free to come to the office and pick up an application. CROSSING GUARD NEEDED! Lincoln School has no crossing guard at this time. We ask all parents to review traffic safety rules and laws with their children. Please make sure that your children are supervised adequately if they walk to and/or from school. 5 BREAKFAST AND LUNCH LOANS In an effort to be in compliance with the Department of Education s revised meal loan practice, Lincoln School will not make unlimited meal loans (whether for breakfast or lunch) to students who do not have funds in the Meal Tracker accounts. The maximum meal loan amount is as follows: For students eligible for free meals For students eligible for reduced price meals For students who pay the regular student price for meals No loan $2.00 maximum $11.25 maximum If there are no funds in your child s Meal Tracker account, and the meal loan maximum amount has been reached, you need to provide your child with breakfast at home and send your child to school with a home lunch. The school s guidelines are reflected in the parent handbook (pages 20-22) regarding recommended deposits and loan balances. To ensure that your child has enough monies in her/his Meal Tracker account, we recommend payments of $45.00 for full price meal status students and $8.00 for reduced price meal status students. Free meal status students may make deposits into the system for second lunches, second breakfasts, and milk. Students with insufficient funds will be served breakfast and lunch, but money should be deposited in the student s account before a negative balance of $11.25 for full price meal status students and $2.00 for reduced price meal status students. Any parent having difficulty paying a loan should have their child eat breakfast at home and send child to school with home lunch until the loan can be paid in full. NEGATIVE MEAL TRACKER BALANCE STATEMENTS Parents / Guardians should be aware that Negative and Low Balance Meal Time Statements are sent home with their child every Tuesdays and Thursdays. If your child continues to have a negative balance in his/her Meal Tracker Account, Lincoln School s Office will be notifying you immediately. Please settle your child s loan by the next school day to avoid administrative action. Your cooperation in this matter is truly appreciated! MEAL TRACKER DEPOSITS: Parents or students may make deposits into their Meal Tracker accounts via cash or check (payable to Lincoln School) by dropping off payments in the Meal Tracker Deposit Box at the office between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily. Payment envelopes and deposit slips are available on the office counter. Parents who submit a bounced check will be charged a $25.00 fee. Once the fee is paid in full, the office will then accept checks from those parents. However, the office will only accept cash from those parents as long as the fee is unpaid. Parents who send their children to school with deposits should direct them to the office to make their payments. They should not give their payments to their homeroom teachers, because the teachers will not be responsible for making their students deposits. Upon receipt, deposits will be processed and the money will be available for use by your child 24 hours after the deposit date. Cash is not accepted on the line in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch service. MEAL TRACKER NEGATIVE BALANCES, CARRYOVER BALANCES, AND REFUNDS Below is a chart breaking down the total costs for breakfast and lunch for the remainder of the school year. If your child eats breakfast and lunch in school, please be sure to have enough funds deposited into your child s Meal Tracker account. Any negative balances will not be allowed and will need to be paid off before the end of the school year on Friday, May 24, If your child will be returning to Lincoln School next school year, his/her remaining balance will be carried over to next school year or can be refunded upon parent request. When these rays reach the skin, they cause tanning, burning, and other skin damage. Sunlight contains three types of ultraviolet rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA rays cause skin aging, wrinkling and contribute to skin cancer, such as melanoma. UVA rays pass through the earth s ozone layer. UVB rays are also dangerous, causing sunburns, cataracts (clouding of the eye lens), and effects on the immune system. They also contribute to skin cancer. Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. UVC rays are the most dangerous and are blocked by the ozone layer. To protect your family from exposure to UVA and UVB rays, there are lots of good sunscreens available for kids, including those with sensitive skin, brands with fun scents, long-lasting waterproof and sweat-proof versions, and easy-application varieties in spray bottles. Concentrate on the SPF (sun protection factor) numbers on the labels. For kids age 6 months and older, select an SPF of 30 or higher to prevent both sunburn and tanning. Choose a sunscreen that states on the label that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays (referred to as "broad-spectrum" sunscreen). To avoid possible skin allergy, don't use sunscreens with PABA; if your child has sensitive skin, look for a product with the active ingredient titanium dioxide (a chemical-free block).

Campbell s Labels for Education: Help earn merchandise for Lincoln School by clipping UPC labels and caps on some of your favorite Campbell s, Swanson s, and Pepperidge Farm products. Some UPC labels are worth 1 point and some are worth 5 points. All points collected translate into merchandise Lincoln School can select from Campbell s catalog. Such merchandise includes: classroom accessories, art supplies, computers/software, library, math, science, music and PE materials.
