February 15 th No School President s Day March 4th Wax Museum around 2:30 Mardi Gras Tuesday, February 9 th is the end of Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday. We will be celebrating and learning about the history of Mardi Gras, the significance of the colors and a bit of fun in religion class. If there is anyone willing to donate King cakes (we still need one!),bead necklaces in purple, gold and green, or napkins, or cups in traditional Mardi-Gras colors for our celebration on the 9th please let me know. Thank you in advance! Hooray for the Book Fair! Thank you for the new books for our classroom library Valentine s Day Celebration We will have a Valentine s Day party on Feb 12th. Treats are always welcome! Your child may bring Valentines for our class, the entire 5th grade, or no Valentines to all. Students may not just pick and choose who they give valentines too as that doesn t spread love but causes hurt feelings. I have attached a copy of our class list so your child can have all the names that they need if they choose to pass out Valentines. Our party will be hosted by Elaine, Quinton and Sophie, thank you to them and their families February Project Project of the Month: Students have been reading their biographies in class this past week and will begin working on their poster and notes next week. They should finish reading their book by the end of next week. Curriculum Math: Hrabe Chapter 5 Helmberger- Chapter 6 Maresch -Chapter 9 Language Arts: Unit 4, Lesson 17 Social Studies: Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 Religion: Chapter 9 and St. Valentine Writing: Letter writing, speeches and poetry

2 Project of the Month: Biography For February and into March we will be working on reading a biography, taking notes, giving a speech in first person, designing a biography poster and finally taking part in a wax museum performance. Information on this project should come home with your child and will be posted on my website. Additional information on the wax museum will come home closer to the performance date in March. I will be breaking this project into steps in class and helping walk the students through the process. I will not be giving all the information and supplies needed right away, as that can be overwhelming for many. You can help them by reminding them to bring their biography to school to read each day. In class I will also be giving them their poster and modeling the project steps for them. Project focus for the week of Feb 8th-12 th : We will be reading our biographies, taking notes and beginning the poster (handed out in class this week). We are hoping to have finished reading the biographies by Friday! In class I will demonstrate the speech writing process and students should begin writing their speech on note cards and practicing it. Mark your CALENDAR Friday, March 4th will be the Famous 5 th Grade Wax Museum afternoon time more details will come home next week! Reading Logs Over the past month many students are forgetting to complete and hand in their reading logs. Many students are missing two or three weeks in a row. Reading logs are a portion of their reading grade and help me to grade part of their independent reading. Please help to remind your child to fill out, have signed and hand in their reading logs every Friday. Thank you for your help with this. Bring in $1.00 and wear pink or red on Friday, February 12th for Valentine s Day! All monies raised will be donated to the Episcopal Homes

3 Biography Book Report February Project 1. This month you need to read a biography. Our school library has a good collection and the Woodbury Public Library has even more! If it is less than 100 pages please have it approved by your teacher. 2. Everyone in fifth grade will read and learn about a different person s life. You can choose several people you are interested in learning about, write them on a slip of paper for Friday and then I will assign one to you on Monday, February 1. Assigned people will also come in the Friday Folder. 3. After completing your book you will write a speech about the person s life. Things to include in this speech are: An introduction The body of the speech should be in chronological order and include at least eight important details of the person s life A definite ending Delivered in first person: I 3-5 minutes Be dressed as your person 4. We will learn about speech writing and delivery in class. It is your responsibility to finish writing and practice at home. 5. Practice! Practice! Practice! 6. Give your speech! 7. We will have our Annual 5 th grade Wax Museum in early March. The date and time will be announced in the class newsletter in the upcoming weeks. Due date: Week of February 22. We will have about four speeches each day. You will choose the day you want to do your speech and I ll record it on the calendar.

5 Biographical Speech Guidelines Student: Famous person: Introduction: Grab audience s attention. Quote, question, or amazing fact. Tell them what you are going to teach them. Body: Move in chronological order. Teach them. Have at least six details. Denouement. I am remembered in history because Conclusion. Tell us what you taught (quick summary) a strong ending sentence. Time: 3-5 minutes Other details: 1. Speak in first person I 2. Dress as character. 3. Practice!

7 Become Your Child's Classroom Junior Achievement Volunteer! Why: Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspire & prepare youth to succeed in the global economy. Where: In our classroom When: In April and/or May. What: All class materials are provided by Junior Achievement, including on-line training session for first time volunteers. The lesson plans are user friendly, fun, and easy to teach. Experience in business is NOT necessary to be a Junior Achievement volunteer. How: Only your time and passion is needed to become a Junior Achievement volunteer! Only minutes per week for five weeks. Janet in the office if interested! Thanks!
