All students were inspired by his amazing designs and interesting architecture, especially his vivid use of colours and inclusion of natural forms in his buildings. He designed buildings with wavy lines because there are no straight lines in nature, and incorporated a lot of nature into his buildings. Student s work was on display in the library for much of the term, and brightened up our classrooms on our dark winter days. Students cakes and textiles inspired by Hundertwasser s colourful style. 2 State Cross Country Championships On Thursday 14 th July, 20 Ballarat High School athletes braved the cold and went down to Bundoora Park to race in the Cross Country State Championships. Despite having snow 2 days leading up to the competition and having boggy running tracks, our School performed extremely well. Ballarat High School won Gold in the Under 15 girls team, Kate Macauly, Jemma Peart, Lauren Kinnersly, Emily Tinker and Ellena Raven are pictured below. Congratulations to all those who participated. Tahlee Van Roosmalen, R e b e c c a O K e e f e, Jasmine Kawa, Sophie Gluyas and Kellie Egan won Silver in the Open girls team, and Samuel Dutli took out the Bronze in the Under 14 Boys event with an impressive time of Schoolkids Bonus Many parents will have recently received the Schoolkids Bonus of $428 per child. These funds are specifically designed to help with education costs. I encourage you to support your child s education and Ballarat High School, and take this opportunity to pay all outstanding charges on your family account. We would also welcome payments in advance for future costs. Programs such as Instrumental Music, Specialist Sport, Rowing and VET are optional extras to the standard school program, accordingly, students placement in these programs will be subject to review, if payment, or an appropriate arrangement for payment, has not been made. Payment prior to departure is also required for all camps and excursions. 2

3 Year 7 and 8: End of Term Assemblies. The end of term assembly came after a very full eleven weeks where our students performed at high levels across a range of different areas. Our assemblies are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the efforts and achievements of our students. We were ably led through the assemblies by a team of students who displayed great leadership skills. Thanks goes to the year 7 presenters; Ben Ludbrook, Charlotte Malcolm, Emily Glass and Ethan Ross and the year 8 presenters; Tarun Raven, Georgie Simper, Latesha Shanks and Liam Vercoe. Our talented musical students displayed great skills, entertaining their peers with a range of songs. We also presented many hard working students with Learning Area awards for Maths, Science, English and LOTE. Congratulations goes to all these students for the contributions they have made. The final awards presented were to recognise a number of students that have displayed to a high level, the 3 School values of Pride, Respect and Responsibility. These awards are nominated by the students classroom teachers and Team Leaders based on the manner in which they conduct themselves both in and outside of the classroom. For 2017, Office Max Australia Ltd will become the Ballarat High School booklist service provider. A key feature of the change will be a web portal for parents, which will provide a simple and individually tailored booklist for each student, thereby making book and stationery choices easy. There will also be the opportunity for resources to be delivered free of charge, prior to Christmas. This is not only time saving and convenient, but supports student learning and study preparation for the following school year. Further information and guidance will be provided to parents as we move closer to the release of the finalised booklists. We are currently working with the Office Max team to ensure we select the best resources for student learning, but also that value for money is optimised and that customer service is exemplary. We look forward to building a strong partnership with Office Max that supports families, students, staff and the school community. CONVEYANCE ALLOWANCE Conveyance Allowance applications already received, will continue to be applicable until the end of the school year. However proof of continued travel, via submission of the second semester MYKI receipt is requested. 4 Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition Laura Benney, Zoe Bettles and Max Dei, Year 11 students, all p r e s e nt e d fine, articulate speeches filled with zest and p a s s i o n w h e n participating in the Voice of Youth Public S p e a k i n g Competition. Laura was selected to represent Ballarat at the recent state finals, in the event that she could not participate, Zoe was selected. Laura was awarded the best speaker and invited to speak at the state final in Melbourne on Sunday 19 th June. Following this, she will represent Victoria in the impending national finals in Melbourne on Saturday 30 th July. Well done Ballarat High public speakers. Mr Marcollo Spaghetti Eis Spaghetti Eis is a dessert common to northern Germany. In summer, people eat it at outdoor cafes while enjoying the lovely weather. Presumably because this was happening in June in Germany, junior students at BHS opted to make this their cooking session for the term. Students squeezed vanilla ice cream through a Spätzlemaschine resembling a giant garlic press, this machine is used in southern Germany to make noodles. The Vanillaeis formed the spaghetti. Students then scooped chocolate ice cream into balls to make the meatballs, and topped it with strawberry topping (as tomato sauce) or maple syrup (as barbecue sauce). Finally, a sprinkling of almond meal became the parmesan cheese. Although a little messy at times and seemingly inappropriate for the middle of winter the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves while learning about German culinary culture! Frau Beilharz 4

5 JUNIOR BOOKCLUB In the final week of Term 2, the Junior Book Club was given the opportunity to hear bestselling author Leanne Hall speak at the Wendouree Library. Leanne has written three books; This is Shyness, a romantic adventure set in the suburb of Shyness, a neighbourhood in which the sun hasn't risen for three years; Queen of the Night, the enchanting sequel to This is Shyness. The third is Iris and the Tiger, a surreal book about twelve year old Iris, who was sent to Spain by her greedy parents in order to secure her eccentric great-aunt s fortune and her even stranger estate. Getting to meet a real-life bestselling author was amazing on its own, hearing her speak was special on a whole different level. It was so inspiring to hear her life story and how it connects to her writing. She spoke not only about herself, but also told us stories of inspiration, perseverance, support, determination, and creativity. Leanne was very encouraging for others to pick up a pencil and write. We got to ask her a bunch of great questions and even threw a couple of story ideas around. To be able to share story ideas with a real author was an amazing experience. She was the guide through our own night in shyness. Miranda Spiller SEMESTER REPORTS: Semester summary reports were ed out late last term and also added to Edumate. Any parents who have not seen their child s report are urged to log onto the Edumate parent portal. The semester summary report can be found under the Carer Portal tab and then at Academic Reports. Steven Pompe Host families needed for Country Students Ballarat High School in conjunction with the North Ballarat Rebels, are looking for families to host young male students for the 2017 school year as part of their Western Victoria s Talented AFL Player Pathway Program. Host families vary enormously some have children at home, some are empty nesters and others are grandparents but all are interested in getting to know and support a student from another community and providing a Ballarat home for them. Most students are between 16 and 18 years old and return home for term breaks and holidays. They may potentially come for one or two years. There are many benefits associated with hosting, including a weekly allowance which will be paid by the student s family. If you would be interested in hosting a country student, please make contact with Ashley Baker at Ballarat High School on to discuss further. 5
