February 23, 2011 Lou Fields, President of AATC and founder of the Black Dollar Exchange announced the First Annual Maryland Black Business Summit & Expo being held in the City of Baltimore on March 24-27, The Summit-Expo will be held at the Palladium Conference Center located at 2900 Liberty Heights Avenue in northwest Baltimore. Fields stated the mission of the Summit is to bring together Maryland business and government leaders, 500 business owners and other professionals to access the State of Black Business in Maryland; and to provide participating businesses a unique opportunity to showcase their business, products and services. The business summit will feature a Thursday, March 24 town hall meeting, Friday and Saturday expo, business over breakfast, luncheons, a reception, awards dinner, presentations, seminars and panel discussions. The theme for Friday, March 25 is Doing Business with the Government and Going Green - where are the business opportunities. Saturday will focus on Buying Black Making More Black Millionaires in Maryland. Baltimore topics of interest include minority business participation in the Uplands redevelopment, slots in Maryland, Baltimore s Super Block, $1.4 billion State Center project, Red Line, Pennsylvania Avenue Redevelopment initiative, North Avenue Project, Baltimore Development Corporation, and the impact of the Mayor s Office of Minority Business Development and the Governor s Office of Minority Affairs. Fields, the founder of the Black Dollar Exchange and the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce stated Blacks in Maryland have an estimated $49 billion annual buying power which if properly utilized would create many more Black Millionaires in the State of Maryland, thousands of jobs, joint ventures, community development, support for community groups and nonprofit organizations, assist in closing the disparities in education, health and employment for Black Marylanders. 6 Lou Fields is the co-founder and President of the BBH TOURS and the African American Tourism Council of MD, Inc. Working with co-founder the late Steven Pace, Errol E. Brown, Sr. and other supporters, the Council serves as a nonprofit advocacy organization which has been active in the preservation and tourism community. The Council s mission is to educate research, preserve, protect and promote Maryland s African American History & Culture as a vital and beneficial product as part of the Baltimore/Maryland tourism industry. Lou Fields is also the founder and first president of the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce ( ) and the Black Dollar Exchange (2010). The Council provides services to communities, organizations and public entities that are in need of research assistance and information services. Services include referrals and development assistance in history, heritage tourism & preservation, program development, funding sources, lectures, exhibits, and special events such as dedications and tributes about notable and unknown Marylanders. Through the Council s tourism division we provide heritage tours across Maryland, including the popular Frederick Douglass Path to Freedom Walking Tour in historic Fells Point Baltimore, Maryland. In my second book, the Maryland Black Facts Book you will find useful information and items for discussion and further research to assist students and adults to become better acquainted with the African American Experience in the State of Maryland.
