Park Road, Southbourne, PO10 8PJ bourne.org.uk / Aspiration, Innovation, Motivation October 2017 Dear Parents, Carers and Friends, We are delighted to have completed a really positive start to this academic year with a strong set of results behind us and a very focused Year 11 working hard and attending lots of after school sessions, including an intensive revision day today. This half term has again seen many exciting curriculum activities, which you will see sprinkled through this edition and I thank parents, staff and students for all working so collaboratively together. We will have a few staff changes after half term with Mr. Clark replacing Miss Cammack for Drama and Mrs. Gilbert who is also leaving us in Science. Year 9s take part in community art activity at Queen Elizabeth Country Park. See page 4 for more details and our website for photos in our gallery. Dates for next half term are in this edition, but can I draw your attention particularly to our next Christmas production on 19th December, the first one under the new musical direction of Mr. McGeever and his team and we look forward to seeing you all there. Wishing you are all a restful half term and I look forward to seeing all our students back on the 30th October. Yvonne Watkins, Headteacher Freya and Felicity were among some of our delightful Year 11 student helpers during our successful Open Evening. Acceptable Use / Parent Permission Form We have recently sent home with students, our Acceptable Use of IT Policy User Agreement. If you have received one of these forms, please return it as soon as possible. The forms can be handed in at Reception and should you need a new form, these can also be collected at Reception. Thank you for your co-operation.

Welcome back with a new look! With the start of the new term, we have made a number of changes to our branding which includes changes to our uniform as well as a new website. It should be noted that this is still under construction, and we are currently addressing some minor issues. Once it is fully operational, we hope that you will like the new layout and find it easier to use. Please use our link to School Angel on our eportal, for all your online shopping requirements. You will be directed to your chosen retailer in the usual way, but each time you spend, a percentage of the sale will be allocated back to our school at no extra cost to We now have an active Twitter page so that you can keep up to date with all the latest 3

Bourne RRSA and local community support Chichester Foodbank Bourne Community College RRSA worked in partnership with local primary schools in connection with Emsworth Food Festival. Pictured are some of our Bourne students with the amazing food contributions for Chichester District Foodbank and Stonepillow. What a generous and compassionate community we live in! We were amazed at the amount of food donated on Friday, 6th October, said Mr. Harper, Rights Respecting Coordinator at Bourne Community College. I would like to thank students, parents and carers for their kindness and support. We had the privilege of delivering the food to Chichester Foodbank yesterday - they were delighted with the level of support coming from our local community as we delivered alongside Southbourne Juniors and Emsworth Primary. 4 Year 9 students learn from local artist in Forts and Fleets community art project. 30 Year 9 students were selected to participate in a community art activity based up at Queen Elizabeth Country Park called Forts and Fleets. This project is military funded as well as sponsored by Hampshire County Council and involves two days at the park working with local artist Madeline Allison. The day we attended on Wednesday 4th October introduced Year 9 to life drawing, the subject being chickens! They embraced this task and outcomes were fabulous. The artist was truly inspiring and kept our students engaged and entranced with her wealth of knowledge and passion for the subject. Students also explored art using found objects and carving in to chalk stone with flint, naturally coloured with berry juice. Huge thanks to staff at QE Park and to Year 9 who were a joy to spend the day with. Mrs. Cluff Head of Art & Design 3

Bourne Community College celebrates successful Open Evening Bourne Community College celebrated another hugely successful Open Evening when it opened it s doors on Thursday 28th September to prospective new students, parents and friends. The College was buzzing with handson activities from visiting Rainforest creatures, exciting musical performances and stunning displays from members of the STEM team to name just a few. We would like to thank everyone who came along and to all staff and students who made it such a success. I was particularly impressed with the variety, quantity and quality of the ICT equipment. I really didn t expect that you would have all of this amazing stuff! I was impressed with your Head Girl, Tess. She took me on a tour of the school, and was fantastic - really helpful, knowledgeable about the school, interesting to talk to and very mature. Inspiring Open Evening at Bourne Community College including a racing car sponsored by Stannah. Great opportunities here. Shelagh Legrave, Principal of Chichester College My daughter was over the moon to see that Art comes in many different forms. She thought that the maths on offer was awesome! She was really welcomed into the MFL department by staff and students and now realises that languages can actually be fun!

Students included in decision making at The Bourne The views of our students are vitally important at Bourne Community College. We seek the voice of them in making important decisions including the hiring of staff. A panel of four students supported Ms. Barber, Mr. Colley and Mrs. Kemp in employing new learning support staff. Emily Wells in Year 10 has written about her experience on the panel of student inverviewees. Another rising music star! Congratulations to Hannah Blampied who just before summer achieved her Grade 1 in Clarinet. Well done Hannah for all your hard work. A special mention too for Hannah's woodwind tutor here at Bourne, the marvellous Miss Jennifer Norman for her inspiration and dedication in ensuring Hannah's success. Mr. McGeever Subject Leader of Music I thought it was interesting being on the interview panel because we were able to talk to the candidates in depth and find out what they would do at our school. It was also interesting to find out something more personal such as their hobbies. This helped us to relate to the adults and understand if they also could relate to us as children. It really made me think about what type of adults we need to support us all in our school. I personally think the adults should be nice, make lessons interesting but also be strict when needed. We put a good range of questions to our candidates, who were all very nice but very different. The last candidate talked to us a lot. She was very nice and sounded as though she would be quite strict when needed. She was enthusiastic and had energy. I think she would make learning fun. I enjoyed being part of the decision making process in the school. Ms. Barber SENCo Article 12: Respect for the views of the child Every child has the right to say what they think in all matters affecting them, and to have their views taken seriously. 9 The Power and the Glory of the Medieval Church Year 8 students have created some fantastic board games whilst learning about the Medieval Church. They gathered evidence in class to make game cards - POWER, HELP and HOPE. Meanwhile at home they used great imagination to plan and create the boards for their games which they then brought in to school to play. The results were fantastic! Students thoroughly enjoyed playing each others games and gave constructive feedback on them, whilst consolidating what they had learnt. Mrs. McGarry, Leader of History 73

Shakespearean Sonnet Challenge This half term, some students in Year 9 were given the challenge to write a Shakespearean sonnet and present it in an interesting and unusual way. I was overwhelmingly impressed by the quality of writing and the imaginative way in which students tackled the task. They completely outdid my attempt, which began: Man / ches / ter / U / ni / ted / are / the / best / team.... Here are some examples: Mr J. Paige Assistant Leader Of English 10

STEM trip to Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) Yr8 and 9 Students had the fantastic opportunity to visit Americas Cup and former Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie s Landrover BAR Headquarters in Old Portsmouth followed by a visit to Portsmouth Watersports Centre to go sailing. Students spent time at the Landrover BAR Tech Deck and were given a unique behind-thescenes experience with hands-on interactive experiences, enabling students to get close to the boats, people, and technologies that are helping the British Challenger team achieve their goal, to bring the America s Cup home for the first time in its 165 year history. Students finished the day by setting sail on the open water and learning basic sailing skills. A great day was had by all! Mr. Carter, Leader of Year 9 12

COLLEGE CELEBRATES WITH GRADUATION CEREMONY The success of more than seventy Chichester College graduates was celebrated at Chichester Cathedral last month The ceremony recognised the hard work and achievements of students who have completed higher national certificates (HNCs), higher national diplomas (HNDs) or foundation degrees in subjects ranging from animal management to performing arts. And for the graduating class of 2017, it was an emotional occasion. Emily Johnson, who was awarded with her HND in Music Performance (Jazz) and also received the award for Music Performance (Jazz) student of the year, said: I m very happy and overwhelmed! I wasn t expecting it to be such a big event. VISITORS ENJOY GREAT DAYS OUT AT CHICHESTER COLLEGE Visitors of all ages have been able to experience the fun side of college life, as the college opened its doors for two celebration events. In May, thousands flocked to the college s Brinsbury campus for the annual Brinsbury Show and Country Fayre. I feel very happy and very privileged to have studied here. Many graduates paid tribute to their lecturers after collecting their certificates. Abigail Clue, who received her HND in Equine Management, said: The support from everyone has been amazing over the past two years. Lydia Marks, graduating with a foundation degree in Events & Hospitality Management, added: Lianne (Grogan) and Andy (Ward) were brilliant. If you had a really bad week, you d come in to college and they d just brighten up your day. They encouraged us and pushed us forward. As ever, animal antics proved popular with people drawn to watching the dog agility exhibitions and horse shows. There were also lots of opportunities for visitors to have a go themselves, with various activities across the campus ranging from tree climbing to crazy golf. Debbie Parker visited with her family. She said: It was a fantastic day, as always and so much to see and do. It was so well organised and staff and students were helpful and informative. Well done to everybody involved a big thumbs up from us! And last month a bumper crowd turned out for Chi-Fest, which saw the college s Chichester campus come alive to the sound of music. More than 50 acts performed across four stages, dazzling visitors to an eclectic mix of musical delights, from rock to pop, jazz to punk and acoustic arrangements - there was something for everyone. Performers from the award-winning Theatre Inc. a specialised theatre company created by the college to support young performers living with disabilities took part in a special space spectacular, joined by young dancers who had attended a dance workshop at the festival earlier in the day. Brendan Chase, from Birdham, was one of hundreds to turn out for the occasion. He said: It s been a great day and it s nice to see the talents of young people on show. That the college puts on a free day like this is great for the community.
