Specialised Learning The Casuarina Senior College Elite Sports Program provides an athlete friendly environment with highly qualified staff. The program value adds to the students own sporting schedule with a strong focus on developing physical competencies. Accelerated courses are reflected by the colour of the boxes. 4 Year Ten Fitness Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence Fitness is a practical course that focuses on student s fitness and conditioning. This will include development of aerobic endurance, speed, strength, flexibility and core stability. The focus of Fitness is largely practical. Students will use a variety of training methods to improve their fitness. Theory content will focus on training. Practical 75% Theory 25% 2 202
5 Year Ten Health & Physical Education Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence Sports Wear Health and Physical Education is a practical based course that offers students the opportunity to participate and develop skills in a range of sporting activities. The course emphasises personal development, wellbeing, independence and self-reliance. Practical: Students are actively involved in a range of team and individual sporting activities. Theory: Students study a variety of topics relating to health, wellbeing and sporting performance. Topics include; fitness, training, competition, mental health and relationships. Practical Participation and Skill Development 50% Theory Work 50% 1 203
6 Year Ten (Stage One) Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence Sports Wear Physical Education Physical Education offers students the opportunity to develop and improve their sports skills in a range of individual and team activities. Physical Education also extends and applies the students skills through the study of skill development and coaching and officiating procedures and principles; and develops the students knowledge and understanding of training principles. Practical (skills and application): Students study three practical activities. These individual and team activities are selected following negotiation between the students and the teacher. Theory: Students complete the Community Coaching General Principles course and the Introductory Officiating course. Students also complete the Level 0 Strength and Conditioning course which introduces them to speed, strength, endurance and flexibility training. 7 Stage One Physical Education (Sports Psychology) Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence Physical Education (Sports Psychology) offers students the opportunity to develop and improve their sports skills in a range of activities. Practical (skill and application tasks): Students study three practical activities. These individual and team activities will be selected through negotiation between students and the teacher. Folio: The theory content will focus on sport psychology including goal setting, psychological resilience, concentration, mental preparation overtraining and burnout. 8 Stage One Practical Sports Nutrition $30 to cover the cost of consumables used in practicals and projects. This includes the cost of excursions. Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence Scientific Calculator x 1 In Practical Sports Nutrition students learn that good nutrition is integral to a healthy and active life, and it is important that accurate information on nutrition is made available to individuals and communities. Students of Nutrition are presented with up to date scientific information on the role of nutrients in the body as well as on social and environmental issues related to nutrition. In this course students focus on the importance on nutrition in athletes. 9 Stage One Certificate III Fitness $۹۹. Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence The Certificate III Fitness is a VET Course that is studied in class time. The course is a full year length course. There is also a 20 hour work placement which needs to be completed outside of school hours. Certificate III Fitness is the minimum qualification required to become a Gym Instructor. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of fitness and training fundamentals including anatomy and physiology principles, healthy eating information, as well as planning and delivering gym and training programs. 11 Year Ten (Stage One) Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence program. This is a compulsory one semester length course of study required by the Australian Curriculum. Personal Learning Plan (PLP) PLP is designed to help students make informed decisions about the personal learning goals and choices to prepare for their education, future career and life pathways, with a particular focus on careers in the Centre for Excellence Pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Medicine and Health Sciences English, Humanities and Languages The focus of PLP is the development of student capabilities in communication, citizenship, personal development, work and learning. Learning Activities will relate to each student s specific learning need, abilities and career goals. Students explore research practices to develop skills in undertaking research, such as planning their research, developing and analysing their data, and presenting their research findings. 13 Stage One (Stage Two) Students must be participants in the Centre for Excellence program. Research Project B In Research Project B students choose a research question that is based on an area of interest to them. Students explore and develop one or more capabilities in the context of their research. Research Project B provides a valuable opportunity for student to develop and demonstrate skills essential for learning and living in a changing world. This course enables students to develop vital planning, research, synthesis, evaluation, and project management skills. Research Project B enables students to explore an area of interest in depth, while developing skills to prepare them for further education, training and work. Students develop their ability to question sources of information, make effective decisions, evaluate their own process, be innovative and solve problems. Research Project B may contribute to student s Australia Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The external assessment for Research Project B must be written. Developing the Capabilities: Literacy, numeracy, information and communication technology, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding.
