If not instructions on how to download the free app and register with your child s grade are at the office. We hope that all parents will register so they can stay in touch with everything that happens within our school community. This is an important part of the communication process with our families to keep you informed. This is also where you can submit your child s absences which need to be submitted by 9.30am on the day of your child s absence. 2 From the Principal Welcome back to Term Two which is promising to be yet another very busy term. We have had a great start and the children have come back rested and refreshed and ready to learn Last week our consultant, Lyn Watts visited as she does on a regular basis and was very impressed by what she observed in the classrooms. She did close observations in the Year 3-6 classrooms and watched the teachers teach a Reading mini lesson. She then sat down with each teacher and gave them constructive feedback about their practice. This is very valuable for our teachers as all of them want to do the best job they can possible do. It is also excellent role modelling to the students as they see their teacher still learning. This is something we constantly tell the children-we are all learners and we all need to strive for our best. In a couple of weeks time she will come out again to do exactly the same with our P-2 teachers. While she was here our 1/2 teachers showed her some of the students writing pieces and she was astounded. She was so impressed she took two of the samples and entered them into a competition judged by the Literacy Secretariat of Victoria. They won a prize for their work which was judged to be at a very advanced level for their age. Congratulations Marli and Amelia we are very proud of you! Later this term on Friday 25 th May we continue our learning journey, this time with a Maths focus. This will be a pupil free day and no children are expected at school that day. The NAPLAN tests are due to take place later this month. On 15 th 16 th and 17 th May all Year 3 and Year 5 students will sit national tests in Reading, Writing, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy. These tests are then sent in to the Department for correcting and we receive the collated results later in the year. We use these results to inform our planning and it provides information for a future focus in our teaching. Last Monday night we held our Foundation (Prep) Information Night for prospective new enrolments for It was a highly successful night and extremely well attended. The teachers presented information on the curriculum and our philosophy, our School Captains, Zoe and Lachlan spoke about highlights of their school life and one of our parents, Vanessa Bos gave a parent perspective. We already have many enrolments and currently I am conducting many school tours. There is much interest in Chirnside Park PS. I think we are becoming more widely known and our reputation is very strong. Our new website showcases our school very well; there is a lot of information for both our current families and prospective new ones. Please have a look; I am sure you will be impressed. Chirnside TV is now live. Lilydale District Network of Schools working together! There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that when networks of schools work collaboratively, student achievement is optimised. The Lilydale Network of schools including both primary and secondary are very pleased to be able to work closely to take the education of our students to the next level. On Thursday May the 10th as part of an ongoing shared practice agenda, we will be engaging with a range of workshops held at varying network schools between 4.15pm and 5.30pm, organised and led by specialist teachers from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). Teachers will be able to choose to attend workshops on a range of subjects including: digital coding, STEM, critical thinking, ethical capabilities, literacy, numeracy, music and health education. They will hear from expert teachers who have the latest in evidence based teaching strategies that will ensure our students benefit when the teachers return to the classroom. The opportunity for our teachers to come together and share ideas is also an important part of the shared practice program. We look forward to engaging with the workshops and continuing the ongoing professional learning that engages and inspires our teachers into the future. Jan Marinakos 2

3 School Council Report Welcome back to term 2. I hope your school holidays were filled with fun and excitement and are looking forward to another productive term. We have some new and continuing members of School Council who have been elected to represent you and our school community in assisting in the efficient governance of the school. School Council members ensure that the decisions affecting students of the school are made having regard, as a primary consideration, the best interests of all students and support decisions that enhance the educational opportunities of all students at the school. School Council members also ensure the school and the School Council comply with any regulations and/or requirements of the Act or any regulations, guidelines or policies issued under the Act. School Council does not make any decisions regarding the day to day operations of the school. I would like to introduce your School council Members for this year. 6 Physical Education Grade 5/6 Interschool sport The 5/6 Interschool sport winter season is due to start next Friday, the first 2 weeks of term 2 are practice and organisational rounds. All AFL players must ensure they wear a mouth guard during matches and any practice sessions. A helmet is optional. They must also wear a CPFC jersey from the football club or provided from the school. A reminder that as it is winter season, sports will continue during light rain. If there are storms or lightning, play will be suspended until conditions clear. A spare change of shoes and clothes is vital for students to bring to school to change into after sport on wet days. All our sports for home games are played at either CPPS (netball, volleyball) or Kimberley Reserve (AFL, soccer, softball), next to the school. Also, can the basketballers from last term please return their singlets to Mr Norton ASAP. House Cross Country The top 10 placed students in the 9/10, 11 and 12/13 year old races from House Cross Country will be invited to compete in the District Cross Country Championships on Tuesday 29th May at Lilydale Lake. They will receive these invitations and information notices either this Friday or early next week.
