ACT JUSTLY Love God Love Others Love Yourself 2 Redford Drive, Skennars Head PO Box 1310, Ballina NSW 2478 Phone: (02) Facsimile: (02) xccball@lism.catholic.edu.au Website: Office Hours: 8:00am 4:00pm Uniform Shop: Term 4: Newsletter No th October, 2014 Dear Parents & Students, Welcome back to Term 4. It is always difficult to come back after a break. No doubt many families are happy to see school resume. Holidays are basically about family and catching up on work not done during the term. As a College community we wish to welcome back Mr Anthony Condon from Long Service Leave. I am sure that after a term off, he is looking forward to the term ahead. We also welcome back Ms Rachel Eisenhauer who will be returning from maternity leave. As a community, Xavier Catholic College should also be supporting and praying for our Year 12 students who began their HSC this week. There are also many families within our community who need our continued support and prayers. So often we feel as if we are struggling alone and the support and prayers of others become so important. We have a responsibility to encourage one another. The use and understanding of Scripture is an important part of this encouragement. Last weekend I came across some Bible trivia. Did you know that: The Bible contains 700,000 words. The New Testament contains 182,000 words. The New Testament was not divided into chapter and verses until There are more than 1,230 different translations of the Bible. The Bible is the most printed book in the world. All of this information is, of course, trivia. The real meaning of Scripture lies in our ability to read, interpret and be open to the word of God. What is most remarkable about the Bible is that every word has a meaning in our lives today. In order to grow as Christians and to encourage each other we should, some time each day, be reading a passage from the Scriptures and applying it to our lives. A Real Spiritual Experience I would like to thank the many people who welcomed me back after being away on a pilgrimage for the past three weeks. During this pilgrimage, I with fifteen leaders from Jesuit schools from all over Australia, visited many sacred places associated with the faith journey of St Ignatius and the early Jesuits. It was a real spiritual experience as we visited places throughout northern Spain, France and Rome where St Ignatius and the early Jesuits studied, served God s people, preached the word of God and converted many. Whilst I found every place we visited inspirational, some places had a definite impact on me. Places such as St Ignatius birthplace in Loyola, St Francis Xavier s birthplace in a castle in northern Spain, Montserrat where the Black Madonna is situated in the basilica, the holy cave in Manresa, where St Ignatius wrote the famous Spiritual Exercise that are still very much relevant and used today, the Vatican, and the university in Paris where three men: Ignatius, Francis Xavier and Peter Faber formed the foundations for the largest and most influential religious order in the world, were all spiritually powerful. Memorial Liturgy for Samantha Enright Towards the end of last term the College community was deeply shaken by the sad news of the tragic loss of Year 11 student Samantha Enright in a car accident. Today we gathered to pray specifically for Samantha she was part of our College community for nearly five years. Along with our prayers for Samantha this morning, we also prayed for her family and friends, in particular, her parents Greg and Christine, as they journey through this most difficult time. A plaque in memory of Samantha will be placed in our Memorial Garden. I take this opportunity to thank Father Michael, our Parish Priest who celebrated this special Liturgy, and to Mr Eyles who organised it. God Bless, Michael Vella Principal Inside this Issue: Extra Masses at Lennox Head HSC English 2015 School Fee Reminder

ACT JUSTLY Catechesis and Evangelisation Mr David Eyles Leader of School Evangelisation URGENT Accommodation Needed for NET Ministries Team During Week 4, eleven young people from NET Ministries will be working with our students in Years 8 and 10. The team of five young men and six young women from various countries (including Australia!) need to be billeted (in pairs) with host families for the duration of their stay in Ballina. If you are able to offer accommodation for two young people (along with dinner and breakfast) for one or more nights could you please send in the form that was ed to all families last week, or collect a paper copy from the office. Team members arrive on Monday, 27 th October at approximately 4.00pm. They have a team bus, and after some preliminary meetings at school, they will find their own way to their host family homes by about 5.30pm. The team needs accommodation until Sunday morning, 2 nd November. (They can be collected from host homes by the NET bus.) They need breakfast each morning and dinner each night. Lunch and morning tea are provided by the College. Pictured Right: The 2014 National Team from NET Ministries. Team members have sleeping bags and, if necessary, the team can use their own bus to pick up and drop off team members to their home each day. Team members need to stay in pairs (or 3 s etc.) and may not share sleeping quarters with family members. Additional details on NET Ministries are available from their website: St Vincent de Paul at Xavier Catholic College Xavier Catholic College was well represented at the Kids Camp training in Coffs Harbour during the recent school holidays. Participants in this training course are now prepared to assist at overnight camps for disadvantaged children during the January School holidays. Our new executive was commissioned at our first meeting this term with President Madelyn O Brien, Vice-President Amelia Kearney and Secretary Kyla Jelfs handed their badges by Fr Michael at the College Assembly with other incoming school leaders. At lunch time we gathered in the College Chapel with the Diocesan Youth Coordinator for the Commissioning Liturgy (see picture below). Upcoming events include a Buddies Day for members and volunteers 16 years of age and older on 1 st November, a return visit to Crowley Village for members and volunteers aged under 16, and hosting a visit of Crowley residents later in the term. St Vincent de Paul Meetings will continue to be held every assembly day. We use the first half of lunch to get to know each other better and the business meeting is conducted in the second half of lunch. New members and visitors always welcome.

Love God Ignite Conference 2014 Our 18 Xavier Catholic College delegates (from Years 7-11) spent four days of the recent school holidays at Australia s largest annual Catholic Youth Conference. We joined a group of 200 from the Lismore Diocese travelling together and staying overnight at the Christian Bros boarding school at Nudgee. It was a tiring but very inspirational trip for all involved. Festa Christi 2014 Festa Christi is a gathering for selected Year 8 students from Parish secondary schools in the Lismore Diocese to celebrate and develop their faith. It will be held on Thursday, 6 th November and Friday, 7 th November at Camp Koinonia, Evans Head. Xavier Catholic College can nominate up to 12 students to attend. All transport, food and accommodation costs for these students will be met by the diocese. Nomination forms were handed out this week, and are available from the College Office, Miss Sarah Gleeson or Mr Eyles. Senior Retreat The College s first Term 4 Senior Retreat will be held from Wednesday, 5 th November until Friday, 7 th November. There will be no overnight retreat following the Trial HSC exams in Notes were due this week, and students are required to re-organise their after-school work and sport commitments etc to ensure their availability. Students also need to consult with the student leaders in Year 12 to organise their rooming arrangements for this overnight experience. THREE EXTRA ONE-OFF MASSES AT LENNOX HEAD: Father Michael, our Parish Priest, and the Parish Pastoral Council have decided to have a three weekend trial of Saturday Vigil Masses at Holy Family Church Lennox Head. These will be on 18 th and 25 th October and 1 st November and the Mass time will be 5.30pm. On those weekends, we will still have the usual 7.30am Sunday Masses. This does not mean that any Mass times will change following the experiment. Everything will return to normal from the following weekend 8th/9 th November. Then we will be able to review how it all went. Please note that this experiment will not have any effect on Mass times at the parish church in Ballina. Please support these Masses by bringing your family and friends. Everyone is welcome. 4 Love Others Curriculum Update Ms Yvonne Head Assistant Principal Our Year 12 students started their HSC examinations on Monday and conclude on Wednesday, 5 th November. We continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers. Our Year 11 students commenced their HSC studies this term. We spent three lessons on Tuesday discussing the requirements and processes associated with the HSC internal assessment. The students received a booklet which outlined the College policy and the assessment tasks for each course. A similar information session was held Tuesday evening for parents. It is good to see the number of parents ensuring they remain aware of the demands on their sons/daughters so they can support them through their HSC studies. This week our Year 11 students also received their final report for the Preliminary courses. Please encourage your sons/daughters to respond to teacher advice to reach their potential in the HSC courses. You also have the opportunity to discuss their progress at the Year 11 Parent-Teacher meeting on Monday, 20 th October. In the last few weeks of this term our Years 7 to 10 students will finalise their assessment and/or complete examinations. It is important that they work consistently throughout the term completing all classwork, homework and assessment tasks to the best of their ability. By listening to and acting on the feedback they receive from their teachers they will experience ongoing improvement in their skills and understanding. Parent Forum Meeting 9/10/14 Ms Annie Lewis A good meeting is a quick meeting and that was the case on 9 th October when the Parent Forum got together for its monthly meeting. In Mr Vella s absence, Ms Head gave us a rundown on what has been happening in the school including the redevelopment of the staffroom, the success of the boys and girls rugby teams at a recent carnival in Forster and the Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony. Staff were extremely pleased with the large number of parents and guests who attended the Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony and several parents commented on the great behaviour of all the students. The DVD presentation from students of St Francis Xavier and Holy Family Primary schools to the graduating class was well received. Good luck to the Year 12 students who are sitting their HSC exams. The next Parent Forum meeting will be held on Thursday, 13 th November. Welfare News Mr Paul Reidy Leader of Welfare Dear Parents & Students, Being the start of term it is an appropriate time to be reminded of the way students should conduct ourselves at the College. Things like being prepared for class so you are not visiting lockers between periods, being on time for class and wearing your uniform correctly. Shirts tucked in, skirt/dress knee length, shoes, jewellery etc. Coming into the hotter months it is more important than ever to have hats on if you are not in a shaded area. The student diary has the requirements listed if you need to refresh yourself with these. We are not a new College anymore, we have many achievements of which we can be proud; academic, cultural and sporting. We can show this pride in the way we approach our lessons, wear the uniform and in keeping the school grounds tidy. I know Mr Melenhorst spoke to Year 11 students about leading the way in this regard and I hope they will take on this responsibility. We can display this pride in our relationships with each other - whether it is fellow students or with staff. Obviously if students don't adhere to these rules then there are consequences. We all make mistakes from time to time, but if corrected or challenged by a member of staff about your adherence to these rules, it is not up to you to debate them. Students need to accept the consequences with good grace. Xavier Catholic College is a great place and the way you conduct yourself will display your pride in being part of this community.

Love Yourself HSC English 2014/15 Mr Vincent Trirro Leader of English On behalf of Year 12 English teachers of the 2015 HSC cohort, I wish to warmly welcome students and parents in their forthcoming intensive study of English, which formally begins this term. As a mandatory study, the next 12 months will undoubtedly provide a wide range of valuable learning opportunities, challenges and discoveries (excuse the pun). Learning is of course a collaborative process and in anticipation of the support, questioning, discussion and reflection that will occur over the next 12 months, I would like to take this opportunity to impress upon our students and parents the importance of effective study routines, positive engagement with texts and above all a consistent focus and earnest effort. It is important that students read texts repeatedly and personally engage with these on a deep level. A regular revision timetable should be implemented for the study of English. It should be noted that all work completed is part of a developmental process and class work, participation and ongoing effort is a critical component of this success. Students must embrace opportunities to refine and develop their compositions through drafting processes. They must accept responsibility for their own learning and development and work collaboratively to achieve their personal best in their respective English study. Five English courses of study will be offered at the College, per the following: English Studies: Mrs Carol Myers English Standard: Ms Kerry McLeod, Ms Rebecca Kennedy, Mr Paul Horvath (on leave until Term 1, 2015) Ms Rose Lobban and Ms Sue McLintock English Advanced: Mr Damian McManus & Mr Vincent Trirro English Extension 1: Mr Damian McManus English Extension 2: Mr Vincent Trirro As we begin with the new Area of Study Discovery (English Standard and Advanced courses), I wish students and parents all the best for the 2015 school year. If you have any queries pertaining to the study of English at Xavier Catholic College, I would be pleased to assist. 6 ACT JUSTLY Year 11 General Mathematics Mr Peter O Toole Leader of Mathematics Ms Page s Year 11 General Mathematics Class, consisting of Ellie, Courtney, Mia, Ashley, Talei, Ben, Alex, Jacob and James are aiming to test the mathematical minds of the Xavier Catholic College community. Students will be completing problem solving activities in class. See how well you can solve the following problems (answers in the next newsletter). Good luck! Question 1 Matchstick problem Create a square by moving only 1 stick Question 2 The Penny Triangle Move just three pennies and flip this triangle upside down Question 3 As my birthday approaches I start to collect leaves - a little bizarre perhaps, but I enjoy it! On the first day of the month I collect one leaf, on the second day I collect two leaves, on the third day I collect three leaves, and so on. By my birthday I will have collected 276 leaves altogether. On which day of the month is my birthday? Literacy & Numeracy News Ms Carmel Zuino Literacy & Numeracy Coordinator At Xavier Catholic College, we are working to build a culture that values books and reading in our community, with Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading taking place in English classrooms and for Years 7-10 every Tuesday morning. From January to September this year, the library recorded an increase in borrowing of 1000 fiction texts as compared to the same period last year. This is very encouraging as it is evidence of the success of the reading culture we are nurturing in the College. On the final assembly of last term, I took the opportunity to recognise, congratulate and reward our most prolific readers with a certificate and a book prize: Marley Collins, Sophia Spina-Crummy, Caleb Evans, Jayman Hosking and Katerina Pavez-Santander. Our most prolific reader is from Year 7; Joel Dryden, who not only received a certificate but a small gift as recognition of his avid reading. The competitions held in the library during Literacy and Numeracy Week were awarded to the following people: The Who s Reading What? competition was won by Luke Murphy (Year 12), who achieved a perfect score, and the staff prize went to Ms Carol Myers. The Library Quiz was won by Ewan Harding (Year 9). The Book Review competition was won by Jessica Simpson (Year 8). The most popular person in Year 8 on that day was Ryan Bigg who won the Lolly Jar Guess with his calculation of 318 lollies. In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the 30 Year 8 reading mentors who worked with the Year 2 students from Holy Family and the courageous and very talented students who participated in the Music and Lyrics concert: Tania Teurquetil, Mitchell Evans, Tama Scott, Ellie Brabrook, Gemma Broadley, Marcus Kolo-Higgs and Dan Sullivan. And finally, I extend my sincere thanks to the staff and students who enthusiastically participate in the opportunities presented at the College.

Love Yourself Year 9/10 Elective Sport Fishing Catch of the Day Xavier Community Represented at Byron Bay AFL 9s Invitational Mr Paul Reidy The Byron Bay AFL 9s Invitational was the first of what is expected to be an annual event attracting teams from around Australia. A group Xavier teachers, former students and parents formed a team to enter the event. Unsure of how a group of ageing former players of various codes would go we got together for a kick at the Xavier football field. From a social point of view the team clicked immediately, the skills and rules took a little longer. In our group we have soccer, rugby league and an ice hockey player mixed in with the Aussie rules boys. Team - Mark Ellis, Nic Ellis, Jarred Ellis, David Marchioro, Sam Kennedy, Mark Lee, Jake Hayes, Michael Raeburn, Trent Dooley, Andrew Robinson, Paul Reidy, Joe Reidy. The team performed above expectations (which were admittedly quite low) by winning 6 games out of 7, only losing to the eventual winners to finish third. It was a great weekend played in the right spirit. Special mention to Mr David Marchioro our Canadian exchange teacher who takes back with him playing the Australian game and to Jarred Ellis a former student (and Mr Ellis' son) who plays for the Gold Coast Suns. It was a wonderful experience and a great way to further build the Xavier community outside the College.
