To be eligible, the graduating student must complete an essay on The Value of Volunteering in Today s Society ; a cover letter outlining career plans, educational institution of acceptance & work/life experiences & achievements to date. Must be a former student of Cape Smokey Elementary; have an average of at least 60%; furthering his/her education; participated in volunteer activities in or outside of school and had parental involvement in home & school. (must apply) (Decision made by Home & School) Cheque given in January upon proof of enrollment. $200 Cape Smokey Elementary In recognition of the achievements of a former student who is planning to further his or her formal education. The student, while not necessarily having the highest average, is one who has a lot of potential. (Decision made by Meat Cove Community Centre.) $100 Ocean View Lodge A graduate from Meat Cove. (Decision made by Ocean View Lodge.) $500 Central Co-op, St. Margaret s Village Graduate must be pursuing further education. Student or parents must be active members in good standing at Central Co-op. Cheque given in January upon proof of second semester registration. (Decision made by Board) 2

Also, they must be continuing their education at university or a technical, vocational or business institution. Ainsley Donovan Memorial- Student Council Awarded to a graduating student who highly values athletics and friendship, and is well respected by peers and team mates. (Decision made by teachers) Cheque will be given upon proof of enrollment in an educational program in January. $250 Robert Gwynn Memorial One bursary is to a graduate furthering his/her education in trucking, mechanics, welding, or construction. A second goes to a graduate who is furthering his/her education. 6 $1000 Vince Ryan Memorial Scholarship Awarded to a graduate with an academic average of above 70%, who will be pursuing a post secondary education. Applicants must complete an essay summarizing their career goals, non-academic attributes, and what this scholarship would mean to them. (must apply) (Decision made by committee) $250 Scotiabank A graduate who is pursuing post secondary studies in business or another program; must have good communication skills, a minimum average of 60% and tell briefly about their community involvement, including volunteer work, extra curricular activities, and summer employment. (must apply) (Decision of Scotiabank.) Cheque given in January, upon proof of registration. Sydney Credit Union A graduating student who plans to further his/her education; eligible applicants or parent/ Guardians must meet requirements set by Sydney Credit Union. $250 RCMP $100 Bay St. Lawrence Community Centre Graduate furthering his/her education at the college or university level, including a law enforcement academy. He/She must be of good character and be active in the school or community. First consideration is given to any student entering the policing, corrections or social development fields. Must write essay identifying a social issue in the community and how it could be addressed by the youth, community and the police (must apply) (Decision made by RCMP) Cheque given in January, upon proof of enrollment. A graduate from the areas of Sugar Loaf to Meat Cove who will be attending a post secondary institution; not based on marks only; background of volunteering. (must apply) (Decision of staff at Centre) Cheque given in January, upon proof of enrollment. $300 Bay St. Lawrence Harbour Authority Bay St. Lawrence Women s Fishnet Son or daughter of a member of the Harbour Authority who plans to continue his/her education. Preference is given to those whose relatives are active members of the Fishnet and to students who are active in their communities providing environmentally friendly initiatives. (must apply (Decision of committee) $200 East Coast Rope A student who contributes positively to school life and is successful in both academic and extracurricular activities. (must apply) (Decision of Pharmasave staff) Cheques given in September, and January, upon proof of enrollment male/ 1 female $500 Cape North Farmers Market Victoria County Community Health Board Student must be furthering their education. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest & involvement in activities of relevance to the interests of the Farmers Market. (must apply). ( Decision by teachers) A graduating student who is enrolling in an academic or vocational study program; must write an essay answering three specific questions. (must apply) Decision of Health Board. Cheque by end of summer. (CHEQUE MAILED DIRECTLY TO STUDENT) $500 Victoria County Municipal $500 Cabot Trail Relay Association Successful student will have demonstrated community involvement during their high school years, is an active community volunteer and is pursuing further education. (must apply) Cheque given in January upon proof of enrollment. Applicant should be involved in a healthy, active lifestyle either as part of a team, individual or recreational sport, not necessarily competitive. Must also demonstrate an active involvement in community volunteer work. Must write essay. (must apply) (Decision of principal and guidance counsellor) Cabot Teachers Criteria and decision made by Cabot teachers. NSTU Northside Victoria Scholarship A graduating student who is a son or daughter of a teacher who teaches in the Northside-Victoria Local. Based on four criteria (need, academic achievement, school activities, community activities). A cheque will be awarded after proof of attendance from their institution of study prior to January 31 st of the first Academic year. (Decision of NSTU selection committee.) Cabot Trail Lions Club Scholarships A graduate involved in school and community; academic achievement. (must apply) (Decision made by Lions committee) Cheque given in January. 7

8 $1000 Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Scholarship Student must be furthering his/her education. A cheque of $500 will be given in September and another cheque of $500 in January. (Decision made by teachers) $350 NSTU Northside-Victoria Local A graduating student who is a son or daughter of a teacher who teaches in the Northside-Victoria Local. (Decision made by Teachers.) $1000 Victoria Co-op Fisheries Scholarship Son/daughter of a member or employee.
