Phantom of the Opera Adapted from the novel, Le Fantôme del l Opéra, by the French author, Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber s riveting score, with lyrics by Charles Hart, has enthralled audiences since it opened in London in Her Majesty s Theatre on October 9 th, 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles. Critics have used the terms, spectacular, a thrill-ride, sumptuous, soaring ballads, and vintage spine-tingling melodrama to describe the various productions of this dramatic musical masterpiece, which is the longest running show on Broadway. Influenced by the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, Leroux sets his Gothic romance in a Paris Opera House built with secret passageways and upon dark labyrinths that are haunted by the masked Phantom or Opera Ghost who loves Christine Daaé, a dancer and his protégé, whose singing career he has promoted to lead diva through guile, intimidation, and a bit of magic. Challenging his devotion and obsession for her is the Vicomte de Chagny, a patron of the Opera House, who is a former acquaintance of Christine s. Abductions, defiant confrontations, a Masquerade and a public unmasking of the disfigured Phantom are just a few of the plot elements that are woven into this melodrama of a love triangle in which the female protagonist must finally choose between her angel of music and fiancé. The memorable musical score weaves through the storyline tendering all the emotions evoked by longing, passion, and everlasting love, while the spectacular effects like a crashing chandelier punctuate dramatic plot twists. This is a remarkable performance that you will not want to miss. The St. Mary s Springs Academy High School production includes the following cast and technicians:

We usually like to have five bigger items that will draw our kids in so we can provide a safe place for them after prom. So, the Post Prom committee is looking for any parents who are willing to donate a bigger prize item that one of our children could win. In the past we have had such things as mopeds, ipads, tablets, gaming stations, TVs or even laptops. We are open to new ideas as well. If this is not something you want to tackle on your own, you can always go together with a few parents and donate something together. Or maybe you would consider making a cash donation, and we can pull some money together and go buy something? We thank you in advance for anything you may do to help draw our kids this event. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call Bob or Kathy Teofilo at Attention all Parents of Seniors - the Senior Banquet for the Class of 2017 is set for Sunday, May 21, 2017, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. A letter was sent home with all students regarding the cost, time, etc. Please note that the student meal is covered by funds raised by the class. Each student may invite two guests, who will need to pay $18 per plate. Watch for your invitation in the mail in early April - RSVP date is May 1, Any questions should be directed to Corrine Anderson at csanderson@smsacademy.org or Maggie Sales at msales@smsacademy.org. 12 Scrip: The Scrip Office will be closed during Winter Break. Campus Ministry Saint Dominic Savio : March 10 th Saint Dominic Savio s Story So many holy persons seem to die young. Among them was Dominic Savio, the patron of choirboys. Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined Saint John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12. He impressed Don Bosco with his desire to be a priest and to help him in his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate Conception which, besides being devotional, aided John Bosco with the boys and with manual work. All the members save one, Dominic, would in 1859 join Don Bosco in the beginnings of his Salesian congregation. By that time, Dominic had been called home to heaven. As a youth, Dominic spent hours rapt in prayer. His raptures he called my distractions. Even in play, he said that at times It seems heaven is opening just above me. I am afraid I may say or do something that will make the other boys laugh. Dominic would say, I can t do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God.

13 Dominic s health, always frail, led to lung problems and he was sent home to recuperate. As was the custom of the day, he was bled in the thought that this would help, but it only worsened his condition. He died on March 9, 1857, after receiving the Last Sacraments. Saint John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life. Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint. Saint Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead with his cause. Dominic was canonized in Reflection Like many a youngster, Dominic was painfully aware that he was different from his peers. He tried to keep his piety from his friends lest he have to endure their laughter. Even after his death, his youth marked him as a misfit among the saints and some argued that he was too young to be canonized. Pope Pius X wisely disagreed. For no one is too young or too old or too anything else to achieve the holiness to which we all are called. Upcoming Campus Ministry Events, Camps, and Mission Programs SMSA Campus Ministry is inviting all high school students to attend the following events. There are day retreats/conferences, as well as service trip opportunities to take part in. Information on each indiivdual event can be found under our Faith Life tab on the SMSA website.
