1 Providence Spring Elementary's Character Trait of APRIL is Perseverance 1st GRADE LEVEL STEP ONE / OPENING Greet the students and tell them that today you will be discussing the trait perseverance. Ask the following questions and call on different students for answers. Listed below each question are examples of responses you are looking for. (You may need to rephrase students answers or guide them along.) (Ask) What is perseverance? 1. Staying with the task and not giving up. 2. Showing commitment, pride and a positive attitude in completing tasks. 3. Trying again and again and again. 4. Being patient and willing to work hard. (Ask) Can you name some famous people who have shown perseverance? Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Harriet Tubman, JK Rowling, Helen Keller, Walt Disney, Stevie Wonder, etc. (Ask) What are ways you can show perseverance? 1. When you're near the end of a race and struggling, find a burst of energy to cross the finish line. 2. Try a new sport or skill that is difficult and don t quit. 3. Study and work hard to improve your grades. 4. Save up your money and do extra chores to buy something special. 5. Help a younger child learn to ride a bicycle or play a new game. 6. Spend hours practicing to play an instrument. 7. Always finish what you start. Do not give up when things get tough. 8. Try something again, even if you failed the first time. Before you could RUN, you first you had to learn to crawl, then stand, then you had to learn to walk. What if you gave up at crawling because you tried a few times to stand, but fell over?...

2 STEP TWO / READ A BOOK TO THE CLASSROOM Choose a book to read from our designated Character Education section in the school's Media Center. (Library) 1st GRADE / BOOK CHOICES IN OUR LIBRARY: Are You My Mother? The Itsy Bitsy Spider Turtles Race with Beaver Three Billy Goats Gruff Inch by Inch Hamlet and the Magnificent Sandcastle Katy and the big Snow DW Flips Trouble on the T-ball Team You can reserve your time-slot by writing the date and time you need the book on a post-it and placing the post-it on the book so other volunteers can see. - Please remember to always check the book out at the front desk. - Please do not read a book from a tablet or Ipad. STEP THREE / ACTIVITY Choose an Activity from the list on the next page. STEP FOUR / CLOSING COMMENTS / HAND OUT BOOKMARKS Read and discuss the below quote and then give a bookmark to each student. Quote this month: "All your dreams can come true, when you have the courage to pursue them" Walt Disney Walter Disney, born in Illinois, was a movie and television producer, famous as a pioneer of the Mickey Mouse cartoon films and the creator of Disneyland. He is famous for making such movies as Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Mary Poppins and many more. Walt Disney had years of failures and rejections before becoming successful. He believed that you MUST BELIEVE in yourself and your dreams and to use your failures as valuable learning experiences to keep going and PERSEVERE! Bookmarks template on last page. Make copies as needed on colored or plain paper or card stock. You may use the media center's workroom's cutting machine.

3 SINK OR SWIM? Materials: Clear glass bowl with water, modeling clay (Not Play-Doh) Roll clay into four balls: three small ones and one bigger one. (Like small and big marbles). Drop each one onto the water. Tell the kids that each ball represents a person (You can even give the balls names to help the kids identify) Say that most people at certain times feel discouraged and want to give up on things. And just like the clay balls, they will sink in a sad state of discouragement. Now take out the larger clay ball out and start reshaping it and changing your attitude. Mold it in form of a simple canoe. Discuss how it's possible to help change others attitudes about life by changing our own attitude and being a positive influence on those around us. By stretching and shaping ourselves we can be helpful to others and ourselves. Put the boat in the water and watch it float. Now take each of the small balls and put them inside the boat. Ask the students what can happen when one person changes his attitude and decides to become more positive and hopeful. He can lift the spirits of those around you. Helping others PERSEVERE Materials: None Start by defining the word SUPPORT. To "Show Support" means to help someone by showing that you approve of them or something that they are doing. This helps people stick to a difficult task and persevere! Often when we struggle with something and we are finding it hard to persevere, others that care about us (or what we are doing) will show us support by using words on encouragement. Such as "You can do it!" "You're on the right track!" "Don't give up!" "Keep up to good work!" Take examples. Ask for volunteers to come up one-at-a-time to the front with you. Ask them if they are involved in any difficult sports or extracurricular activities. Then ask the class to think of things they can say to help that student persevere when it gets tough. "Run your OWN race" Coloring page Materials: Crayons and a copy of the coloring page for each student. (attached, 2 choices) Write out the phrase "Running your own race" on the smartboard. Discuss: We often compete against one another. Racing, at sports, at our jobs, even at school. But the best way to get better at something is to race against yourself! Run your own race. Do your own best. The meaning of running your own race means holding on to your dreams and moving towards them and not letting anyone (or your own distractions) keep you away from your goals or dreams. PERSEVERE! Do not compare yourself to others. Only compare you to yourself and your last performance. Are you improving? Did you give it your all? Your 100%? If so, then you're running your own race! COLOR IN the page and fill in the bubbles with words on encourage for yourself! Write in up top "Running my own race!" Then take it home and hang it.
