The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) recently released ACT scores show Pikeville High School ranked fourth in the state. The KDE reveals there were 75 juniors in 2012 at PHS who scored an average composite score of 21.7 on the test. Our students also scored an average of 22.5 in English, 20.4 in Mathematics, 21.9 in Reading and 21.1 in Science. Pikeville Independent Schools Superintendent It is gratifying to see these results, said Superintendent Jerry Green Jerry Green said, We re The Fastest Kid in the Galaxy thankful that the tradition of excellence continued yet again with Pikeville Independent ranking fourth statewide on ACT results. The school district has taken several actions to help prepare students for the ACT and helped them achieve the high ranking in the state. Our school district is focused on being college ready that s what this assessment measures. We make certain our curriculum is aligned to the standards to what is being taught each day. Our district pays for our students to take the Explore in grade 7 and also in grade 9 so in grades 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th we have data and results to analyze to concentrate on any area of need the students may have so they re prepared to take that during the ACT during their junior year. Mr. Green concluded with, There s a great deal of intentional hard work, thought, and effort that goes into this not only with our staff but our stakeholders and our students for them to be successful. The 1987 PHS Football Team will also be recognized as they celebrate their 25 year reunion.

The Bear O Fair is the largest community arts project ever held in eastern Kentucky. The artists completed an application that outlined their idea and these were reviewed by a committee. Of the ten large fiberglass bears unveiled, PHS graduate Charles Martin Mims, 10, son of Walter Mims, 84, bear, Musical Movement highlights Mims love for music. Other bear themes were: Honey Bear, Crazy Bear, Aurora Bearealis, University of Kentucky Bear, UPike Bear, Hillbilly Bear,Unnamed Bear, Astro Bear, Pride, the Friends of Coal Bear. The bears will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Artisan Alliance, and the artists, who earned stipends to paint the bears, will also receive 10 percent of those proceeds. 5 The Pikeville High School Alumni Association is offering two different selections of the Tervis Tumbler. In 1946 Detroit Engineers Frank Cotter and G. 6 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 7 Class Notes P A G E 6 Classmates Honored John Paul Runyon, 42, was recently honored and recognized for his distinguished and outstanding years of service to the people of Pike County as Commonwealth Attorney. The Pike County Fiscal Court recognized Runyon during a recent meeting. Runyon and his wife Joyce are the parents of one son, John 75, a physician in Cincinnati, Ohio. Daniel P. Stratton, 71, was the keynote speaker at the University of Pikeville s Opening Convocation in August. Stratton was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. He has served on the board of trustees for UPike for many years. Phillip Elswick, P.E., was recently named a partner at Summit Engineering. He will continue being the Director of Environmental Services for Summit Engineering. He has a BS and an MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky and has been with Summit since Junior Alumni Jamie McGhee, 01 and his wife Lillith announce the birth of their daughter Sophia Margrit McGhee, born July 5, 2012 and weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. Proud paternal grandparents are Carol Campbell McGhee and Jim McGhee 75. Losses in the PHS Family Danny Lee Yates, 76, passed away Wednesday, August 22, He was born on March 30, 1958 to Phyllis Yates and the late James Oliver Yates. In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Brandy Yates and two sons, Chris Yates and Jordan Yates.
