1 UNIVERSITY FACT BOOK Office of Institutional Research

2 Introduction The institutional data presented here has been prepared by the Drew University Office of Institutional Research. The purpose of this document is to make the most commonly requested information about Drew University available in one readable volume. For this reason, most of the summaries here are the product of collating many years worth of officially-reported data. These include data reported in the annual Common Data Set (CDS) for college guidebook publishers or reported to the U.S. Department of Education through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). While the data summaries featured in this collection use standard national definitions whenever possible, readers are still welcomed to consult with the Office of Institutional Research for further background on definitions or context. We would also like to offer our sincere thanks to the Drew offices that provided data reported here: University Advancement, the Finance and Business Affairs Office, and the Dean s Offices of the College of Liberal Arts, the Drew Theological School, and the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies. Please contact the Office of Institutional Research with any comments, corrections, or suggestions for new Fact Book topics. 13 Admissions Test Scores: College of Liberal Arts Table 1. SAT Scores of New First-Time Matriculants Fall SAT Critical Reading / SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Original Scale Converted to New Scale Original Scale Converted to New Scale Original Scale Converted to New Scale Mean th Percentile Median th Percentile SAT Math Mean th Percentile Median th Percentile SAT Writing Mean th Percentile Median th Percentile NOTES: College Board implemented a redesigned SAT test beginning in March The new version of the test combines critical reading (verbal) and writing into one score, returning the test to a 1,600 scale. Fall 2017 matriculants who had only scores on the previous SAT test have had their scores converted to the new scale using a College Board crosswalk. Previous years scores have also been converted to the new scale here for comparison. The percentage submitting SAT scores reported in this section is based on Common Data Set methodology and includes: 1) those who submitted only SAT scores and 2) those who submitted both SAT and ACT scores. Students who submitted only ACT scores or no scores whatsoever (during test optional years at Drew) would therefore not be included in this percentage. Beginning in 2016, the numbers represent only those scores considered in the admissions decision. For more on the reporting of SAT scores, see the Appendix. New Scale 7

Those individuals whose Race/Ethnicity was unknown or unreported were considered non-minorities. More information on Race/Ethnicity definitions can be found in the Appendix. **Consistent with federal regulations, students are defined here as first generation if they fit into either of these 2 categories: a student neither of whose natural or adoptive parents received a baccalaureate degree or a student who, prior to the age of 18, regularly resided with and received support from only one parent and whose supporting parent did not receive a baccalaureate degree. One limitation, however, is that we can only determine if a student fits into one of these categories if the student filed a FAFSA (i.e., applied for financial aid). Students who did not apply for financial aid are typically considered non first generation. This is a convention that is followed in the data presented above, but it is important to note that it may underestimate the true percentage of first generation students. 53 Appendix IR Admissions Census: A census or snapshot of admissions records is taken every year by institutional research on the same date as the Fall enrollment census date, typically after the end of the second week of the Fall semester (after add/drop has ended and changes have been made). SAT scores: The SAT statistics reported here represent the highest test scores for each SAT component (e.g., SAT Math) earned by each student. Race/Ethnicity: Counts of students by race/ethnicity follow the reporting guidelines of the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which were revised in Under the old reporting guidelines, citizens and resident aliens who indicated membership in one of six defined racial/ethnic categories were reported in that category. Under the new reporting guidelines, citizens and resident aliens may indicate membership in any number of racial/ethnic categories. If they indicate that they are of Hispanic origin, no further ethnic/racial information is reported. If they are not of Hispanic origin and indicate that they are of more than one race, they are reported under the category two or more races. In both the old and new reporting categories, the number of students who are non-resident aliens is reported separately, with no further breakdown by race/ethnicity, and students who do not indicate membership in any racial/ethnic category are reported as being of unknown race/ethnicity. Prior to fall, 2012, counts of minority employees included those who identified themselves as belonging to a racial/ethnic category other than White, non-hispanic. This may have included non-resident aliens. Beginning in fall, 2012, reporting of race/ethnicity for employees follow the NCES guidelines as reported above. Because race/ethnicity information is collected at the time of initial employment, many employees with a longer tenure at Drew had reported their racial/ethnic information under the old guidelines, while those hired more recently reported under the new guidelines. In January, 2013, all employees were asked to update their information according to the NCES guidelines. Because we are no longer using the old racial/ethnic categories, employees who did not update their information now fall into the unknown category. This may result in a change in the percentage of employees who can be counted as minority. Student FTE: Full-time students are counted as 1 FTE and Part-time student FTE is calculated by the ratio of credits enrolled to the ratio of credits needed for Full-time status (differs by school and program). Continuous Registration: Students in the Caspersen School and the Theological School must remain enrolled when they have completed all course requirements for their program, but have not yet completed requirements for their degree. Prior to fall 2012, Drew called these students status maintaining matriculation or MM. Students who were enrolled part-time before they entered MM continued to be counted in the parttime headcount, while students who were enrolled full-time before they entered MM continued to be counted in the full-time headcount. All MM students, however, were counted as 0.0 FTE, since they were not enrolled in any courses and carried no credits. Beginning in fall 2012, these students are required to enroll in a continuous registration course while completing degree requirements. Because they are enrolled in a credit- 47

54 bearing course, these students now have an FTE. Students in the maintaining matriculation or continuous registration categories are reported separately from students enrolled in other courses in the Headcount Enrollment tables. IR Completions Snapshot: Every year, IR takes a snapshot of degrees awarded during the fiscal year (between July 1 and June 30). The U.S. Department of Education requires that degrees be reported on a fiscal year basis in its Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Alumni Giving: Alumni on roll refers to alumni for whom Drew has current mailing addresses and who have not requested removal from our solicitation lists. Prior to FY 2010, alumni from more than one school were counted in each school they attended, as were their gifts. The University Totals reported were unduplicated counts, so they were less than the sum of the numbers for the three schools. Beginning in FY 2010, alumni donors and their gifts are reported in the school from which they received their first degree. Consequently, there is no duplication and the University Totals reported are the sum of the numbers for the three schools. Faculty: Faculty counts for all three schools exclude replacement faculty, and include University employees who teach on a part-time basis. Parttime faculty who teach in more than one school are included in the count for each school in which they teach. Tuition and Fees: For the College of Liberal Arts and the Drew Theological School, the tuition reported is for full-time enrollment for the academic year (fall and spring semesters). Students in the CLA may take between 12 and 20 credits per semester for the stated tuition; students in the Theological School may take between 11 and 15 credits per semester for the stated tuition. The tuition reported for the Master of Arts in Teaching program in the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies is based on a full-year, three-term enrollment (summer through spring), during which students take all of the credits required to complete degree requirements. For all other programs in the Caspersen School, the tuition reported is based on per-credit tuition for enrollment in 18 credits per academic year (nine per semester). Financial Aid: Table 1 Aid Awarded to CLA Students (p. 42) is adapted from the Common Data Set (CDS), which reports full-year awards to students enrolled in the fall semester. Awards to students who enrolled only in the spring semester are therefore not included. Following CDS reporting guidelines: 1. Amounts reported as need-based include aid awarded on a non-need basis that is used to meet need. 2. Loan information includes Stafford and Perkins loans only. PLUS, Private Loan Program, and NJ CLASS loans, usually considered loans to parents, are not included. Table 3 Financial Aid to Theological School Students (p. 44) does not include aid to students in the Doctor of Ministry program. 48

55 Table 4 Financial Aid to Caspersen School Students (p. 45) does not include aid to students in the Master of Fine Arts in Poetry program. Discount Rate: The discount rate for first-time full-time undergraduate students is based on numbers reported to the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) in the fall of the student entry year. It is calculated using the formula a / (b * c) where a, b, and c are: a) total institutional aid (excluding tuition benefits and tuition exchange) awarded for the academic year to first-time full-time students enrolled in fall b) number of first-time full-time students enrolled in fall c) published amount of tuition and fees Since numbers are reported as of the fall, they may differ from official financial aid numbers generated after the end of the fiscal year (June 30). 49
