This report describes the school and its setting; provides information about the school's administrators, teachers, students and facilities; summarizes progress made based on the school's improvement plan; and reports student achievement results along with other vital signs. Description Kahului Elementary is located in the central area of the Island of Maui serving students in preschool through grade 5. Historically, a majority of the s students have come from homes in which a family member worked for Alexander & Baldwin s (A&B) Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company s plantation and its various enterprises. The growth of Kahului Town began with A&B s Dream City residential development in the 1950 s. Kahului continues to be characterized by its historical ties to the plantation s immigrant community and, over the years, the school s student ethnic demographics have correlated closely with the changes in the dominant plantation workforce. In recent years as plantation jobs decreased, ties to the island s tourism industry have grown within the parent workforce. Student demographics continue to show an increase in the percentage of economically-disadvantaged students. The has an elected Community Council (SCC) consisting of six members, including two parents, one community member, one teacher, one classified employee and an administrator. Additionally, non-voting student representatives are elected by students to participate on the SCC. The also has a Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) consisting of the General Membership and the Executive Board. Further, Grade 4 and 5 students elect a Student Council. All students participate in PTSA-funded activities such as creative movement classes in partnership with the Maui Dance Council, creative drama classes in partnership with the Maui Academy of Performing Arts, and field trips. After-school sports, such as cross country, volleyball and basketball, are in partnership with Valley Isle Road Runners and Maui County Parks and Recreation. The After- A+ Program is managed by a private provider. The implements a Title 1 school-wide comprehensive program for standards-based teaching and learning. The Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics are implemented in all grades. In partnership with Catapult Hawaii Alliance, school reforms include block scheduling for reading, writing, and math; inclusion practices; an aligned curriculum in core academics; constructed responses in reading and math; and monthly standards assessments. Classroom instructional strategies include bell-to-bell instruction, differentiation, and cooperative groups. A Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) is implemented to address customized supports to ensure academic success for all students. Students may access supplemental educational assistance through the English Language Learners Lumi Kela Lab, through the EXCEL Lab for reading and math assistance; and through extended day and extended year programs. 3 Status and Improvement Report Community Profile Setting Year The Community Profile information updated in this school report reflects selected 2010 demographics for the High Complex (HSC) area in which this school resides. Profile data are based on the 2010 U.S. Census, the American Community Survey (ACS) five-year estimates (centric to 2008), and the incorporation of Hawaii s HSC boundary areas with updated 2010 Census geography. Figures for educational attainment and median household income are sample estimates obtained from the ACS, adapted to conform to HSC geography, and should be considered rough approximations of census counts. 4 Status and Improvement Report Improvement Year Summary of Progress Kahului Elementary is actively involved in the Maui Complex BKM (Because Knowledge Matters) process. Our KAPU Instructional Leaders are competent about decision-making and leading the school to fully implement Common Core Standards in the classroom. Data-driven groups review and revise instruction based upon current student intervention needs for increased rigor or extra instructional support in reading and/or math. Six CADRE s promote activities and events such as ELL Cultural Night, Read Across America, and Math Family Night. Students are provided the opportunity to participate in intramural sports and future opportunities in Robotics. Part of the focus of this past year was the establishment of systems for intentional push-in and pull-out services for all tiers at the school. Our goal is to raise student achievement and increase the percentage of students proficient on Smarter Balanced Assessment. Next year, we will continue to refine our shifts in CCSS with the implementation of Stepping Stones for Math. We have set four overarching goals for the year which include reaching math achievement schoolwide for all students on the SBA at 55%, raising math achievement for male students 3-5 to close the 10% gap with female students, raising math level for the students with disabilities (SPED) to reach current grade-level expectations, and decreasing the achievement gap between non-high needs students and high needs students. In Reading, we will continue to refine our shifts in CCSS with continuing for the second year of Wonders for ELA. We have five overarching goals for the year which include reaching reading achievement school-wide for all students on SBA at 58%, raising reading achievement for the male students 3-5 to close the 9% gap with female reading achievement, raising the reading level for students with disabilities (SPED) to reach current grade level, decreasing the achievement gap between non-high needs students and high needs students, and implementing literacy first to increase the depth of knowledge of teachers on effective reading instruction in order to improve the percentage of students proficient at Tier 1. We will continue to utilize before- and after-school tutorial sessions and enrichment programs to support our overarching goal of improving problem-solving strategies. The RTI team will explore school sessions focusing on Math. This year, we will seek opportunities to embed instructional strategies in writing. For a secondary instructional focus, the KAPU Leadership Team will explore a new goal surrounding growth in opinion/argumentative writing, as evidenced by grade-level common assessments. A possible school-wide SLO is in consideration. Targeted outcome is linked to design, implement, revise, and reflect on common-core aligned curriculum maps to improve the quality of writing instruction and resources used in all K-5 classrooms. Kahului Elementary will implement bi-monthly Data Teams to analyze student work, implement targeted interventions (via bi-monthly analysis sheets), and collaborate on formative assessments including Marzano s high-yield strategies. Our hope is to continue critical-thinking and problem-solving skills with students for the math content area which will support students to become more proficient at scientific and mathematical thinking. By providing a more rigorous writing program at Kahului, students will develop communication skills, abilities and values that can lead to critical thinking and heightened success in everyday life for a 21 st Century Learner.
