2 undergraduate programs general information wright state un1vers1ty This brochure provides a brief introduction to the university and current information about admission, fees and tuition, financial aid, and housing. It will be updated periodically to reflect changes that may occur in fees or policies. Individual brochures in this series are being prepared for each of the university's undergraduate major programs. The University Wright State, Ohio's youngest state-assisted university, was created to meet the educational needs of the upper Miami Valley area and is committed to the task of providing quality educational programs to meet the varied interests and goals of the people it serves. Since its opening as the Dayton Campus of the Ohio State and Miami Universities in 1964, Wright State has experienced rapid growth in enrollment, facilities, and programs. A fully accredited independent university since 1967, Wright State now has over 11,000 students and a full-time faculty of over 400. The Western Ohio Branch Campus, located on Grand Lake St. Marys near Celina, and a resident credit center in Piqua supplement the programs and resources offered at the main campus. A student who has been admitted to the university may register for courses at either campus or at the Piqua center. Wright State is constantly on the move-in enrollment, in new courses and degree programs geared to today's students, and in the expansion and improvement of facilities for the multitude of activities that make up life at a major urban university. Growth, change, and challenge, the elements that have shaped the university's first decade, continue to play a vital role in Wright State's plans for the future. The Campus Major construction has been a part of the campus scene from the beginning. The initial group of buildings-allyn, Millett, Fawcett, and Oelman Halls-house faculty and administrative offices, classrooms, and laboratories. The new library building, a soaring four-story contemporary structure with a capacity of 319,000 volumes, was opened in late summer. The university television studio is housed in an adjacent building. The University Center provides a wide variety of student services, including recreation areas, dining facilities, student government and publications offices, the campus radio station, and the bookstore. A new physical education complex, one of the most complete in the state, provides both teaching and recreational facilities. The main gym, seating 2,800, is home for the WSU Raiders basketball team. Nearing completion is the creative arts center, which provides outstanding facilities for the visual and performing arts at Wright State. An environmental studies laboratory has just been completed and work is about to begin on a biological sciences building. The University Division The University Division, which was created to advise and counsel underclassmen-and especially freshmen-provides the assistance and services needed to make the transition from high school to college a smooth and successful one. All incoming freshmen are registered in the University Division and receive assistance in selecting their courses and preparing their schedules. Students transfer to one of the university's degree-granting colleges after choosing a major-usually sometime between the end of the freshman year and the beginning of the junior year. The University Division's special services programs offer tutoring free of charge to all undergraduate students and provide study skills courses for students who need to improve their study skills. An English skills program has been developed to aid students who need extra work in English before taking freshman composition. Exploratory Curriculum Many students enter the university without a specific career goal or major in mind. The exploratory curriculum permits the student to take courses in any of the university's departments before selecting a major. At the same time, the student may complete some of his General Education requirement; this basic core of courses must be completed by all students, regardless of their area of concentration. The flexibility of the exploratory curriculum enables a student to pursue his interests while making progress toward a degree. Housing The university Residence Hall provides living accommodations for 144 men and 156 women. Applicants are selected on the basis of academic ability, and scholarship assistance is available for qualified students. The completely air-conditioned building has double-occupancy rooms and study lounges on each floor. In addition, recreation areas, laundry facilities, and special facilities for handicapped students are available for residents. Meals are served in the residents' cafeteria in the adjacent University Center. There are apartments within walking distance of the campus. Apartments are also available in nearby communities within a few minutes' drive of the university. Students living off campus may avail themselves of residents' food service for a nominal charge. Students interested in housing-either on or off campusshould contact the Office of the Dean of Students.

4 Undergraduate Programs ( The university offers a wide variety of undergraduate programs through the Colleges of Business and Administration, Education, Liberal Arts, and Science and Engineering and the School of Nursing. Individual programs are described in separate brochures in this series. 5 Admission Ohio residents need only have graduated from an accredited high school or pass an equivalency test to qualify for admission to Wright State. No specific course of study at the high school level is required. Test scores are not required for admission; however, either ACT or SAT scores must be on file in the University Division by the end of the student's first quarter at the university. Earlier reporting of scores will make initial advising more helpful for the student. Students should apply for admission during, but not before, their senior year in high school. Application may be made for entrance in any quarter. Application forms and related materials are available from the Office of Admissions. The application-health form should be completed and returned to the admissions office with the $25 application fee. High school transcripts and ACT or SAT scores should be!illnt directly to the admissions office. A physical examination is required only if the student is disabled or plans to live in the Residence Hall. Financial Aid The University desires to help all students who require financial assistance in meeting the costs of their education. Funds are allocated primarily on the basis of demonstrated financial need. The following programs are available for the school year: Scholarships-The Foundation provides scholarships to students of outstanding academic ability. Academic and Residence Hall scholarships are available to students who qualify. Basic Educational Opponunity Grants-The Basic EOG program entitles qualified students to receive grants ranging from $200 to $1400, with the total amount not to exceed one-half the actual cost of attending the university. College Work-Study Program-Students with financial need may apply for part-time jobs under this program. During the school year students may work up to 15 hours per week. If the student has approval for summer workstudy, he may work up to 40 hours per week. National Direct Student Loan Program-Loans in amounts up to a total of $2500 for the first two years of college or $5000 for the total undergraduate program are made available by the federal government. Repayment does not begin until the student's education has been completed, and may be extended up to ten years. Students who go into certain areas of teaching may have a portion of their loan cancelled for each year of service. Nursing Scholarship Awards-Applicants for these awards must demonstrate exceptional financial need, and priority may be given to students from educationally, culturally, or economically deprived backgrounds. These scholarships are available in amounts up to $2000 per year. Nursing Student Loan Program-Loans under this program may be up to $2500 per year, and repayment may be extended for up to ten years Fees and Tuition Fee schedules are dependent upon action by the state legislature and approval by the Ohio Board of Regents and the university's Board of Trustees. Fees are subject to increase or decrease, and those listed are in effect for undergraduate students for fall quarter of the academic year. A portion of the loan may be cancelled for each year of full-time professional nursing service. Ohio Instructional Grants Program-Every applicant for financial aid must apply for an Ohio Instructional Grant. Grants range from $90 to $570 per year, depending upon the family income and the number of dependent children in the family. A separate application must be completed for these grants and sent directly to the Ohio Board of Regents. Supplemental Educational Opponunity Grants -This federally supported program provides funds for students demonstrating exceptional financial need. Awards range from $200 to $1500 per academic year. Eligibility for the grants and the amount of each grant are governed by regulations of the U.S. Office of Education. Guaranteed Loan Program-Guaranteed loans enable students to borrow as much as $2500 per year, up to a total of $7500. While the student is in college, the federal government pays the full 7% interest on the loan ; when repayment begins, the student assumes the interest. Information on these loans is available through local banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions, and other lending agencies. Applications for financial aid and the Parent's Confidential Statement should be submitted prior to July 1, 1974, in order to receive priority for the school year.
