3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement The members of the Saint Agatha Academy community form a partnership providing a strong academic, Catholic education for the children of the parish and community. Central to the purpose of our school is a genuine desire to develop the whole child academically and spiritually. A Catholic school provides a unique opportunity to strengthen our children's relationship with Christ in all that they say and do. Vibrant learning experiences begin with the strong academic curriculum, which provides knowledge and confidence. Personal growth is fostered so that each member of the learning community has opportunities to reach their optimum potential. Ultimately, we desire our students to have the self-discipline and conviction to become leaders who make the world a better place. Our vision is that with the assistance of the Pastor and the parish we will continue the quality education that has been a consistent hallmark of Saint Agatha Academy. Together we can make a difference in the world that is in desperate need of Christians committed to the values and ideals of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Background Statement Some community schools are mainstays in their community, and St. Agatha Academy, founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Divine Providence, is one of those schools. For almost 100 years, St. Agatha has been a part of the Winchester community. Originally, it served as a boarding school as well as a local elementary school, middle school, and high school. In the mid 1980 s St. Agatha Academy was sold St. Joseph Catholic Church and became a parish under the authority of the Catholic Diocese of Lexington. St. Agatha Academy is a Catholic school with an enrollment of 145 students; 40 students in Montessori Pre- Kindergarten through Kindergarten program, and 105 students in first through eighth grade. Student to teacher ratio in the Montessori Program is 10:1, with a 14:1 ratio in grades one through eight. St. Agatha offers music appreciation and instrumentation, beginning and advanced concert band, physical education, computer applications (common-sense media curriculum), library, accelerated reader program, and extracurricular activities such as Chess Club, Student Newspaper, Jr. St. Vincent DePaul Society (service organization), Student Council, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Basketball, Cross-country, and Track/Field. In fall 2013, St. Agatha Academy will be the first Catholic School in the Diocese of Lexington to offer a liberal arts-based classical curriculum. With a strong math and science curriculum, emphasis will be placed on the implementation of the Trivium (Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric) within a new academic program which will advance the breadth and depth of subject disciplines while also purposefully integrating cross-disciplinary content of the social sciences, humanities, literature, and religion St. Agatha has prospered through many changes, holding true to the founding mission of providing spiritual and academic training to nurture the whole child. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, farmers, athletes, scholars and others have passed through the school s doors on their way to lives in Winchester and into places in the world well beyond Clark County, the Central KY region, and the Commonwealth. St. Agatha Academy is the only private school in Clark County accredited by the Kentucky n-public Schools Commission. In 2008, 2010, and 2012 thewinchester Sunnewspaper readers voted St. Agatha Academy the best Montessori Program and readers also named it the best elementary school and best private-school in Winchester/Clark County. Impact Statement Goals - Guiding Principles Saint Agatha Academy will: Emphasize the dignity and worth of each individual through Christian giving and caring. Shape the learning environment to the child's needs and abilities thus promoting self-worth, self-reliance and self-discipline, attaining success to the child's highest potential. Give a thorough introduction to basic truths of the Catholic faith that will enable the child to understand and live out his/her faith as a way of life. Provide an outstanding academic curriculum based on state and diocesan guidelines and assessment, where the principles of good stewardship will guide the learning experience. Direct each student to accept responsibility for their behavior and thus grow to be spiritually mature persons. Awaken student to global awareness and teach them to love and respect people different from themselves. 3

5 Programs Programs Classical Education Description The Academy is beginning its fourth year as a Catholic school offering a classical education in the central Kentucky region. The full implementation of this program will take several years, and specific costs include (1) teacher support includes specialized professional development programs for faculty training; (2) acquisition of "great books", original documents, and rich literature in support of a classical curriculum; and (3) other material costs associated with the transformation of classrooms and physical learning environments. Sterling/Montgomery County has growth this year from an average of 7 students utilizing the KRF bus service in August, to 13 in December, to a final maximum demand for 20 riders by March. In 2013 we are expecting demand riders by January 2014, since we are already at a bus enrollment of 23 in June SAA enrollment is growing since we are able have started to meet the transportation needs of working families in this east central Kentucky. Unfortunately, after one year of successful service, the KRF subsidy (and matching state funding) is now being cut form the Clark County budget. Through matching fundraising opportunities, we hope to be able to continue this needed service for those seeking the best private and Christian education in the region. Program Comments CEO Comments The Academy is currently planning for the replacement and upgrade of many HVAC units and other physical plant mechanical/infastructure needs. The fundraising goals we have set to address these short and long-term physical plant improvement and replacement will include both restricted and non-restricted donations over the next several years. Five major HVAC units and roof replacement top our list of present and long term needs. 5
