2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement St. Teresa s Academy is committed to the education of young women. We are a Catholic, independent, college preparatory high school, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The Academy is rooted in Christian values and embraces a diverse student body. We promote excellence in education through a challenging curriculum, personal responsibility and participation in extracurricular activities. Background Statement Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1866 the school began on the corner of 12th and Washington. It moved to its present location at 5600 Main in The school began as a two-year college along with its secondary school in 1916, which later became a four-year college for women in The Sisters moved the college and renamed it Avila College in At that point the 5600 Main campus became solely a secondary school. The school sits on a 20-acre campus and is comprised of four buildings, the Music and Arts Building, Donnelly Hall, the Goppert Athletic Center and the Windmoor Center. Impact Statement Top 5 Accomplishments in 2016: 1. St. Teresa's introduced a newly constructed Math Hub which is an independent as well as collaborative learning space. Students who are strong in math staff the hub and offer tutoring services to other students. A math department faculty member is also on hand to assist students. 2. The StarWrite Writing Center opened in the Fall of This resource center is also staffed by students who provide guidance and/or assistance with the writing process. An English faculty member is also available for assistance. 3. STA added two newly constructed active learning classrooms and remodeled three other classrooms to transform them into active learning classrooms. 4. STA began the silent phase of the Academy 150 Capital Campaign. To date, over $7,000,000 has been raised with a campaign goal of $15,000, STA expanded the STEAM (science, technology, engineering arts and math) curriculum by adding six new courses. Both Computer Programming 1 and College Pre-Calculus expanded their eligibility requirements; more than double the students enrolled for these courses in Top Goals for 2017: 1.Introduce the Academy 150 Capital Campaign to STA community. 2.Increase annual fundraising by 5%. 3. Increase STA s endowment through fundraising efforts ($3,000,000 of the $15,000,00 campaign is designated for endowment). STA will also increase the endowment by not withdrawing funds from the endowment for five years. (We met this goal in 2016). 4. Construct a 21 st century library which will promote collaboration, research, independent study and peer-to-peer interactions. This facility enhancement along with the construction of STEAM studios, a robotics lab and a new space for our campus ministry department are all part of the capital campaign. Needs Statement 1.Increase endowment to assist students in financial need and promote diversity. $300,000 2.Facility improvements/repairs. $250,000 3.Funding for two active learning classrooms. $100,000 Board Chair Statement 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of St. Teresa's Academy, the oldest educational institution in Kansas City. When the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet arrived in Kansas City on a riverboat to open the city's first school, their courage, vision, and dedication created the strong foundation for learning that is now second to none. We are fortunate to have a strong, diverse governing body to continue the Sisters' legacy of serving the dear neighbor without distinction. Our Board works in a solid, committed partnership with school leadership and faculty. Through several committees, the Board acts to realize the sisters' mission while insisting on the highest academic standards to prepare our students for success in an ever-changing global world. 2

7 Campus-Wide Technology Initiative Description Category St. Teresa's recognizes that to be a leader among area college-prep high schools, we must teach, utilize and make available the latest technology has to offer. Our graduates are proficient in the use of state of the art technology. Every student at St. Teresa's works from a Microsoft Surface Pro. A wireless campus allows students to conduct research, take online tests, communicate with peers and teachers, and submit assignments from anywhere on campus. The four high-tech classrooms in the Windmoor Center provide opportunities for distance learning, audio visual conferencing and communication with mentors and peers throughout the world. The newly added active learning classrooms incorporate some of the newest innovations in education technology including Smart Boards and active learning classroom furniture. 8 STA Scholars Description Category This program is part of St. Teresa's continuing efforts to further our mission, support diversity and underserved communities. It provides substantial tuition assistance to students who graduated from a Strong City School. The Strong City Schools and their parishes are run by the Dioceses of Kansas City-St. Joseph and have some of the highest levels of poverty in the diocese. St. Teresa's works with these organizations to identify strong candidates to consider for this program. Although academic achievement is an important factor to consider when identifying these potential candidates, it is simply one of many factors considered. Additional factors such as participation in the parish/school community and level of family support/.involvement are also considered. This program provides significant financial support to these students, opens the door to an education that these girls could not otherwise afford, and is a source of strong support for these students to break out of the cycle of poverty. Education, General/Other Education, General/Other Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Five students are now attending St. Teresa's Academy who otherwise would not have had the financial means to attend. They are active members in the St. Teresa's community. They are engaged in student leadership roles, sports as well as extracurricular activities. In addition, all five students are performing very well academically. The STA Scholars program will provide substantial financial assistance to students who would not otherwise have the financial means to attend St. Teresa's Academy. The program allows for a four year secondary education at a premier, Catholic, all-girls high school for these young women. With this education, these young women will develop the foundation to be successful at the collegiate level and beyond. St. Teresa's will continue to collaborate with the Strong City Schools to identify strong candidates for this program. The process will begin with an application and input from the student's elementary school. Grades are monitored by our Academic Counselors and Academic Principal. At St. Teresa's, we utilize an advisory program. Through this program, students from all grade levels form four-year relationships with their faculty advisors and classmates within their homerooms. The administrative team will consistently review the program and evaluate student grades and social success. Another resource available to freshmen students at STA is the Number 1 Club. This club is for students who are the only ones to come from their grade school to STA. The two newest STA Scholars are both in this club and have found the support it provides helpful. St. Teresa's Academy added two new STA Scholars to the program this fall. There are a total of 5 students involved in this program. The students are performing well academically and feel very fortunate to be a part of this program. Last fall, the first three STA Scholars spoke with prospective students from the grade school they attended and shared their enthusiasm about their academic, spiritual and social experiences at STA. This year those students continue to embrace the community at STA by getting involved. One of the newer scholars is very active in STA's campus ministry department and pro-life club. Our counselors work closely with students to find extracurricular activities that match a student's interests and passions. 8
