1 REGULAR MEETING MONDAY, GRISWOLD BOARD OF EDUCATION May 22, 2017 GBE approved 6/12/17 A regular meeting of the Griswold Board of Education took place on Monday, May 22, 2017, in the Library Media Center, located on the 2 nd floor of the Griswold Middle School. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by BOE Chairman, Stuart Norman, Jr. PRESENT ALSO PRESENT ABSENT Stuart Norman, Jr., BOE Chairman; Frank Everett, BOE Vice-Chairman; Laurie Sorder, BOE Secretary (entered at 6:47 PM); Yvonne Palasky; Mary Beth Malin; and Dr. Theresa Madonna, BOE Members. Sean McKenna, Superintendent; Susan Rourke, GPS Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment; Christopher Champlin, Director of Special Education & Pupil Services; Michele Demicco, GPS Business Manager; Erin Palonen, GHS Principal; Marceline Macrino, GHS Associate Principal; Glenn LaBossiere, GMS Assistant Principal; Joseph Bordeau, GES Principal; Rita Quiles-Glover, GES Assistant Principal; and Nathan Berardi, Student Representative to the Board (entered at 7 PM). Jennifer Norman, BOE Member; Stephen Cravinho, GPS Campus Wide Activities & Athletic Director; and Michele Raynor, GMS Principal. The Board and the audience performed the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES To approve the regular meeting minutes of 5/8/17, as presented. Ayes S. Norman, Jr., M. Malin, Y. Palasky Nays Abstain F. Everett and T. Madonna Motion carried. COMMUNICATIONS A. GMS Brochures for Grades 6, 7, and 8 Spring Musical Concerts The Board received informational brochures on the students who participated in GMS spring concerts for grades 6, 7 and 8. 1

Join CABE Express Membership Sign Up Form The Board discussed and expressed interest in joining the CABE Express Membership program, which will allow the Board and up to five administrators to participate in professional development opportunities throughout the year. They asked the Superintendent to enroll them in CABE Express. C. Memorandum from Griswold Town Clerk, Valerie Pudvah, Regarding Resignation of Elected Officials -The Board received a copy of a letter from Griswold Town Clerk, Valerie Pudvah, informing the Board of the process for resigning from elected or appointed town positions per CGS HEARINGS AND REQUESTS None STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT Nathan Berardi provided his final update to the Board on student activities at Griswold High School. Nathan will graduate in June and there will be a new student representative to the Board, Matthew Spinelli, who will take over as the new student representative to the Board at the start of the 2017/18 school year. NEW BUSINESS A. Acknowledgement of Nathan Berardi as our Graduating Student Representative to the Board The Board, the superintendent, administrators, and audience members were pleased to acknowledge Nathan Berardi for his role as Student Representative to the Board. Nathan will graduate in June and he was presented with a small token gift of appreciation from the Griswold Board of Education for his role as Student Representative to the Board. B. Introduction of Matthew Spinelli as the 2017/18 Student Representative to the Griswold Board of Education The Superintendent reported that Matthew Spinelli could not attend this evening s meeting due to his participation in an out of town Lacrosse game, but the Board acknowledged his new role as Student Representative to the Board, beginning next school year. C. Honoring our Griswold Public Schools May 2017 Employee of the Month Erin Bettini - The Board, the superintendent, administrators, and audience members were pleased to present first grade teacher, Mrs. Erin Bettini, as the choice for May 2017 Employee of the Month. Mrs. Bettini was instrumental in planning field day for GES, which was a huge undertaking on her part, and GES wished to honor her by choosing her as their choice for employee of the month. D. Honoring our Distinguished Retirees The Board, the superintendent, administrators, and audience members were pleased to honor six outstanding employees of the Griswold Public Schools as they plan to retire at the end of the 2016/17 school year. Retirees include the following staff members: Daryl Bromley, GES Regular Education teacher; Alyce Corey, GES Special Education teacher; Betsy Kowal, GHS History/Social Studies teacher; Mary 2

3 Fowler, GES Instructional Assistant; Barbara Martel, GMS custodian; and Judy Cote, GES café service provider. E. Honoring our GMS CABE Student Leaders Matt Ladd, Alejandra Garcia F. Honoring our GMS CAS Middle Level Scholar Leaders Ayla Taylor-Robichaud, Logan Richards G. Honoring our GHS CABE Student Leaders Chad Deroy, Kylie Gemeasky H. Honoring our GHS CAS Scholar Athletes Brooke Rainville, Devin Mitchell I. Honoring our GHS CAS Visual Arts Award Recipient Eleanor Mattera J. Honoring our GHS CAS Performing Arts Award Recipient Devin Mitchell The Board, the superintendent, administrators, and audience members were pleased to honor several students for their outstanding performances as scholar leaders, scholar athletes and visual and performing artists. K. Review and Action on Overnight Trip Proposal to Costa Rica Holly Adriano The Board permitted GHS Spanish teacher, Holly Adriano, to promote a non-school sponsored trip to Costa Rica to students and families. The trip will take place during the summer of By Dr. Theresa Madonna Seconded by Frank Everett To give Mrs. Holly Adriano permission to promote a trip to Costa Rica, as an Explorica sponsored trip, and to advertise it as such. L. BOE Update on Gerard & Wanda Brunet Foundation Scholarship Recipients The Board received a list of Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III scholarship recipients from the Gerard & Wanda Brunet Scholarship Foundation. This list was provided for informational purposes to the Board. Tier III recipients have not been notified at this point and time. Recipients will be notified on Senior Night, which is scheduled for June 1 st. M. Gifts/Donations 1. Griswold Senior Center Donation - The Board accepted a generous donation, on behalf of the Griswold Senior Center, in the amount of $100, for the benefit of the Griswold Middle School Music program. Seconded by Frank Everett To approve the very generous donation of $100 from the Griswold Senior Center for the benefit of the GMS Music program. 3

4 2. Anctil Memorial Fund The Board approved a very generous donation of $1,000 from The Anctil Memorial Fund to assist in the creation of the Griswold High School Store. To accept the very generous donation of $1,000 from The Anctil Memorial Fund to assist in the creation of the GHS Store. Note: The Board requested additional information on The School Store. The Superintendent will get more details and provide an update in his weekly Board notes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Budget Deliberations, 2017/18 The Superintendent reported that the Griswold Board of Finance met on May 16 th and they decided to reconvene on May 25 th to take possible action, or not to take possible action, on the budget. The Superintendent also attended a roundtable discussion on May 17 th and noted there are many proposals on the table right now and things are in flux. The state of CT will vote on June 7 th, to finalize the budget, but he is not confident that it will happen. Laurie Sorder added that the Board of Finance was planning to keep a meeting scheduled for May 25 th, but if the BOF found themselves in the same predicament, with no direction from the state, they are prepared to cancel that meeting and to meet on June 8 th, the day after the state is supposed to finalize their decision. If, at that time, the BOF does not have direction from the state, they are prepared to start their work. B. Review and Action on Policy and Regulation #1330 Community Relations Community Use of Facilities, 2 nd Reading The Board approved the changes to Policy and Regulation #1330, as presented. Dr. Theresa Madonna thanked the Policy subcommittee for all of their hard work in updating this policy and regulation. Presentation on Griswold High School Students Participating in Extracurricular Activities S. Cravinho The Superintendent reported that Mr. Cravinho could not offer this presentation, because he was out of district this evening. The Superintendent reported the results of students 4

5 participating in extracurricular activities and included the number of tuition students who also participate in extracurricular activities. B. Financial Update for 2016/17 M. Demicco Business Manager, Michele Demicco, updated the Board on the current status of the 2016/17 budget. SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT A. Vacancies/Appointments/Resignations The Board accepted the resignations of the following individuals: John Shackett, GPS Tech Ed Teacher, full-time; Kathleen Iovino, GPS part-time Special Education Coordinator; Kristin Lalima, GMS Language Arts Teacher, full-time; and Elaine Mattern, GHS Volleyball Assistant coach, with regret.
