For years 7,8, 9 and 10 their interim assessment window opens on 26th February and closes on 16th March. Year 11 will have pre-public exams as will year 12 and year 11 GCSE English intervention begins on 27th February until May. 2 Sixth Form Application Deadline Friday 2nd March The deadline for applications to the Sixth Form for courses starting this September is Friday 2nd March. We have already received over 180 applications from our own Year 11 students and from Year 11 students in neighbouring schools. The application form can be found on the school website and should be submitted electronically. Students should select 4 subjects as their main choices and 2 reserve choices from the 28 subjects on offer. All students who apply to us will be interviewed during the Spring Term and interviews are already well underway. On the application form we ask students to complete a personal statement, telling us a bit about themselves, their interests, areas of strength and the reasons for their course choices. This is really important as we want to make sure that students are choosing the courses that are best suited to them. At the interview students will be asked to talk about themselves, the subjects they wish to study and their future plans or ambitions. We are looking for evidence that students have researched their options carefully, thought about the reasons for their choices and that they appreciate the challenges of A Level study. Following the interview, the majority of students will receive a conditional offer of a place which is sent by . The letter outlines the grades that students need to achieve at GCSE in order to secure their places in the Sixth Form on their chosen programme of study and the attendance requirement, which is usually at least 95% attendance during Year 11 - although exceptional cases will be considered. We also expect students to attend our Induction Day which this year will be held on Tuesday 19th July from 8.15am. From September 2018 we are introducing a new Level 3 vocational science course in Forensic Science which is an exciting addition to the traditional A Level subjects of Biology, Physics and Chemistry already offered by the Science Department. Information about this new course is on the next couple of pages.

3 Forensic & Criminal Investigation BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma Examination Board: Edexcel Why study this course? This course is perfect if you have a keen interest in science and criminology. Students must be willing to learn new scientific skills, problem solve, and explore the exciting world of forensic science. This National Foundation Diploma is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels. The course is weighted towards science but also includes police investigations, psychology, providing the academic and practical skills for a potential role in the science and forensic science industry. What is the course about? BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Forensic & Criminal Investigation aims to: Give all students the opportunity to gain a new, nationally recognised qualification that can be used when applying either for future education or employment Provide a diverse, motivating and intellectually demanding vocational learning opportunities Allow students to acquire scientific understanding of forensics through practical investigation.

Everyone taking this qualification will study FOUR mandatory units, covering the following areas:- Principles and Applications of Science Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques Science Investigation Skills Forensic Investigation Procedures in Practice PLUS two further optional units from:- Physiology of Human Body Systems Environmental Forensics Forensic Fire Investigation Forensic Traffic Collision Investigation Forensic Photography Forensic Genetics Mandatory units: How will I be assessed? Principles & Applications of Science (External Exam) Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (Coursework) Science Investigation Skills (External Task) Forensic Investigation Procedures in Practice (Coursework) The two additional units are both coursework based. External assessment makes up 41% of the course. Entry Requirements? A minimum of 5 GCSE s at Grade 4 and above to include English, Maths and Science. Who is this qualification for? The forensic and criminology sector is diverse and wide-ranging including, for example, forensic science, forensic and criminal psychology and forensic criminology. There is a wide range of occupations for graduate entry including forensic laboratories, the police force and the probation service.

7 Warwickshire Youth Council VOX elections Massive Congratulations to Hope Palfrey on her recent election to the Warwickshire Youth Council. In school we recently took part in elections for Warwickshire Youth Parliament and VOX. All students were asked to vote and returns were collected and counted by the Youth Service. The Youth elections were held countywide and the turnout was impressive. For this election in 2018 we had 18 candidates and 16,397 votes for MYP S As a % of the Young People eligible to vote this equates to = 39.1% Well done Hope. 8 PE News CSW Talent Competition On Wednesday 19 students performed at the CSW talent competition against several schools in Warwickshire, Solihull and Coventry. Out of 30 acts we won both 1st and 2nd place. Our group performance came 2nd and Jess Sadler s solo came 1st. We have won the opportunity to perform at the opening ceremony of the school games. All students performed excellently and worked extremely hard for this event. Many of the dancers are able to use this performance towards their GCSE dance and PE assessment. We can not wait for the opening ceremony and to enter again next year. Sports Leaders It has been a busy week for our Sports Leaders and a big thank you for all your hard work and support. From those who came into school early on Tuesday morning in the rain and hail to help set up the cross country course, to those who stood in the snow Tuesday night to marshal and hare the course! We appreciate your support. On Wednesday the cricket finals saw Water Orton Primary through to the county finals, thank you to the leaders who umpired at all the cricket rounds. On Thursday, thank you to all the leaders who stayed in school to run the sports hall athletics finals. Congratulations to Warton Primary School who won and are now going on to the School Games finals.
