TODAY S SESSION > Welcome and Introductions > Session Goals > Why Backwards Mapping? > Case Study: Health Science Mapping in the 4 Great Lakes regions > The Process and Tools > Interactive Activity > The Long Term Vision > Closing
ICE BREAKER > Name > Role > What was your most influential course in high school or college?
TODAY S GOALS Introduce the process and goals of mapping postsecondary degree programs to secondary programs of study Share developed tools, existing resources, and share best practices among participants Discuss how tools and best bet courses can be incorporated by various stakeholders 4
Why Pathways Mapping? WHAT ARE WE GETTING OURSELVES INTO? 5
THE BIG PICTURE Goal Keep open the greatest number of potential credentials after high school graduation. 6
THE BIG PICTURE Support students, guidance staff, and workforce professionals in understanding the near and long-term outcomes of pathways course sequencing Identify gaps and needs for policy, teacher training, and long term program of study development Identify communication and messaging needs for communities Root pathways in a long-term vision for K-12, 2-year, and 4 year institutions 7
SHORT TERM GOALS: > Use community specific research to identify best bets for Strategic Dual Enrollment Courses > Identify barriers (Research needed, policy support, equity and access, gaps, needed players) > Build and strengthen relationships between postsecondary and secondary partners > Understand the regional landscape for postsecondary and workforce connections > Develop 30-day, 90-day, and 6-month action plan 8
Case Study: Health Science Pathways Mapping in the Great Lakes Region 9

MATERIALS REVIEW 22
MATERIALS REVIEW: TECHNICAL COURSES 23
MATERIALS REVIEW: CORE/GATEWAY COURSES Additional need to explore opportunities to ensure students complete Core and Gateway courses in Math, English, and Communications 24
MATERIALS REVIEW: > Identifying Best Bet Courses: Written Communications Anatomy and Physiology Microbiology Speech Medical Terminology Developmental Psychology > Asking Community-Specific Questions: 25
DISCUSSION > What makes a Best Bet course? Opening doors to options for multiple credentials Opening opportunity for stackable credentials Focus on both technical and core academic course Are there other considerations for Strategic Dual Enrollment? What systems need to be put in place to support communication for health science pathways secondary through postsecondary? 26
HEALTH SCIENCE MAPPING IN ACTION: COLUMBUS, OH Teachers attending externships can align their externship more specifically with the course they teach. 27
HEALTH SCIENCE MAPPING IN ACTION: COLUMBUS, OH Students in a class can attend specific college exploration programs that align directly with that class 28
HEALTH SCIENCE MAPPING IN ACTION: COLUMBUS, OH Community College uses tool to highlight the programs with the most openings and the programs with highest success rates. Students bring the tool on site visits to the hospital. If there is a specific hospital of interest, they are better guided towards the course choice. Employer partner highlights the degrees necessary for each position. 29
MATERIALS REVIEW: KEEPING IN MIND THE BIG PICTURE QUESTIONS Remedial courses and prerequisites Equity Policy Messaging 30
MATERIALS REVIEW: STACKABLE CREDENTIALS AND NEXT STEPS 31
