Educational aims of the programme i.e what is the purpose of the programme and general statements about the learning that takes place over the duration of the programme The aim is to produce a highly knowledgeable professional in Orthodontics at master s level. Further, the aim is to produce a dentist proficient and skilful in Orthodontics. Statement of how the programme has been informed by the relevant subject benchmark statement(s)/professional, statutory and regulatory body guidelines The General Dental Council of the United Kingdom and the Medical Council of Malta have produced curricula for specialist training, with which this course complies. Specialist training dictates a programme of not less than 3 years full-time study. The Specialist training aspect is overseen by the Specialist Advisory Committee in Orthodontics in the United Kingdom and the Medical Council of Malta. This only applies to students who have been formally
4 approved to undertake specialist training leading to direct access to the Orthodontic specialist list. For non-specialist trainees, this programme is related to, but not a formal part of, the GDC curriculum for UK and Maltese specialist training. 19. 8 Other relevant information to explain the programme structure Please note that new students enrolling on the information provided on this section of the PAF will have these regulations stipulated throughout their programme of study. The only exception to this will be if there are changes made by Professional, Regulatory or Statutory Bodies that are noted to this programme. Students must pass all four modules with an overall mark of 50% in each in order to be awarded the MSc. Compensation will be permitted within modules, but not between course units, provided that the mark of an individual element of assessment does not fall below 40%. The percentages of the overall assessment scheme given below will be used to calculate the award of a merit and distinction, according to the core scheme as set out in the Credit Framework Regulations of King s College London. The students will be allocated either through the London deanery to hospitals with associated clinics or to Malta Dental Institute Students who undertake their practical work at the University of Malta will be awarded a joint degree of King s College London and the University of Malta. All other students will be awarded a degree of King s College London only. 21. Marking criteria All elements of assessment will be marked as per KCL Dental Institute marking criteria (in accordance with KCL criteria). In calculating pass, merit and distinction, the percentage weightings of the overall assessment scheme given in section 20 will be used. 22.
