1 Dublin City Schools Career and College Ready Academies FAQ General Question: Will transportation be provided to/from the academy? Available transportation will be determined after the academy enrollment period has closed. Transportation to/from academies will be based on the amount of students that declare a need in the academy applications and on bus availability/scheduling. Question: How many periods will the academy classes take up from the school day? This is depending on the academy. Please reference frequency asked questions for specific academies. Question: What benefit is there to being in an academy as opposed to just taking more AP classes? Academies are designed to provide students with hands on learning with immersion into a career field. The academies are longer than one period block allowing students to dive deeper into the content. Students have ample opportunities to practice soft skills that are in demand from the workforce. Some academies have AP classes within them while others have dual enrollment courses. Question: What is the difference between AP credit and dual enrollment credit? Dual Enrollment courses are college courses taught in a classroom environment. The students doing homework and take exams just as college students would. Students that pass the class, will have transcripted college credit from the partnering institution. These credits can also be eligible for transfer to another college or university. AP courses are taught by trained high school teachers and have the rigor of a college course. Students must pass an end of year exam. If they pass, they can apply for credit for an approved equivalent course at that institution. AP courses are taught by trained high school teachers and have the rigor of a college course. Students may opt to take an end of year AP exam and depending on their score, may be granted college credit. Traditionally with a score of a 3, 4, or 5, a student can submit his or

2 her AP scores for credit for an approved equivalent course at that college or university they are attending. However, AP students may find that although they took the course and the AP exam, their score isn t high enough to be granted college credit. Additionally, at some elite colleges, AP scores are not utilized to grant credit, even when a student has scored the highest score of a 5. While dual credit offers students a transcript proving they completed a course, it may be a transcript some colleges do not accept. It is important to remember that these courses are excellent foundational college preparatory courses, whether or not the effort results in college credit. Question: Can I apply for an academy if I am not a junior or senior? Each academy differs in accepting grade level. Please see the frequently asked questions for the specific academy of interest. Question: Are there specific classes that a student should take in Freshman and Sophomore year to be prepared for the Academy? Each academy differs in content. The Young Professionals Academy (YPA) Question: What is YPA? The Young Professionals Academy (YPA) is a career preparation and career exploration course for juniors and seniors from all three high schools. Class topics include; career testing, professional writing, interview skills, creation of a professional portfolio, social media, problem solving, teamwork, emotional intelligence, and much more. Question: What is the basis overview of YPA? The following are some key facts about YPA. Open to juniors and seniors from all three high schools Students provide their own transportation to their internship sites. Depending on academy enrollment and district decisions, transportation may be provided to/from Scioto. This is to be determined. Students must complete YPA application and submit to their Guidance Office. Selection criteria is based upon GPA, attendance, and participation in a panel interview. Once accepted into YPA students may choose 1st or 2nd semester. Students are encouraged to participate in sports, band, and school clubs. Students dress professionally when interning and are released from school period 6 and 7 for class or internships. A semester calendar will be given to all YPA students indicating YPA class day or internship day. During each six week internship, students intern approximatley 8 to 10 hours per week. Student and mentor collaborate on creating either a 2, 3, or 4 day schedule.

9 YPA is graded conventionally (A thru F) and is 1.5 credits. Question: How will college view a student s participation in YPA? Colleges and universities across the country are extremely supportive of this internship concept. Highly competitive colleges look for other supportive data from students for admission, as all the applicants excel in the college tests and at school with high grade point averages. Many colleges look for evidence that students challenged themselves with unique coursework such as an internship. Internships also help a student go to college with a focus in mind, which assists students in finding success in the next level of their education. Some colleges have accepted students because of their internship experience; while others have even waived coursework based upon the student s individual experience. Numerous students have declared that YPA was the pivotal point in their high school education and gave them a definite head start in college. Career selection can help determine which colleges a student applies to based upon their field of study. More info on DBA Question: What is DBA?
