2 FRA: Principal s Report Dear all, Last night was the Year 11 Leavers' Ball and what an amazing experience that was. Year 11 looked superb in their finery and all those hours of preparation definitely paid off! The atmosphere was buzzing as they came together to celebrate the end of their secondary school career. The modes of transport were their usual eclectic mix ranging from tractors to a fire engine to a very impressive Lamborghini. It was fantastic to see so many parents and family members attend to watch the grand entrances and I would like to thank the large number of staff that also attended. Well done to the organising committee and Mrs Smith who co-ordinated the ball. Thank you to our Sports Leaders who supported Fowey Primary School Sports Day. They were great ambassadors and helped the event run smoothly. We had a very successful couple of trips to Falmouth University courtesy of the English Department and students in Years 8, 9, 10 worked with the University staff to develop their English skills and see University life. It is really pleasing to have received on the back of this trip comments such as 'impeccable behaviour, excellent uniform and a credit to the school'. Today is the opening ceremony of the Cornwall School Games and FRA has participated in volleyball, basketball and athletics, and I look forward to reporting next week how we got on. We will be holding assemblies next week with all year groups about changes that will be happening this side of the summer holidays and in September, we are also putting the final finishing touches to our Sports Day programme - we invite parents to come to this event in the afternoon, please sign in at Reception if you are interested in cheering on your child and their House. I have already placed on the website and sent a message via Parent Mail but to confirm that although the NUT are striking on Tuesday 5th July, I am not closing the school; all students need to attend as normal. 3 FRA: Principal s Report Changes to Governance Adventure Learning Academy Trust (ALAT) has been carrying out a review of governance arrangements across all of its academies and it has been confirmed that new governance arrangements will be put in place from 1st September. This means that in place of our current governing body, we will instead have a new structure of regional Accountability Review and Challenge Groups. Each of these groups will be responsible for the performance of a regional group of academies and will report to the trust board. In addition, each academy will set up a Drive Team. These teams will consist of local parent, student, staff and community representatives, invited by the Principal, to drive tactical projects and improvements within an individual academy as well as working to improve community engagement and involvement. ALAT has had extremely positive feedback from the DfE regarding this new structure and we are confident that this will be of enormous benefit to our academy in terms of sharing best practice with the other academies in the trust and continuing to drive improvement in the academy.

5 Year 9 Celebration Assembly REPORT BY Mrs Guest This week Mrs Davey, Mr Dale and English teachers presented Yr9 students with certificates and awards to celebrate all their hard work and excellent progress over the last twelve months while following a rigorous, demanding English course. Our Yr9s are more than ready to start their English GCSEs now after studying a wide range of texts from Shakespeare, Dickens, Priestley and Orwell. As well as writing for a range of audiences in various forms and styles. On behalf of all the English staff; well done Yr9! 7 FRA: inspired Falmouth University Trip: REPORT BY Mrs Guest. On Wednesday, fourteen Yr10s visited Falmouth University for a taste of further education. Students attended a lecture from Professor Downing on Irish Conflict Poetry (we later found out the lecture she delivered was written and used for her third year undergraduates!) Our Yr10s did amazing to follow the lecture and their notes will be useful for their exams next year. Students also had a private tour of the campus as well as lunch in The Stannary with university students. In the afternoon students took part in a creative writing seminar, which again, opened their minds to the different ways of learning. Year 11 Ball - Thursday 30th June REPORT BY Mrs Smith Year 11 Pupils from Fowey River Academy said goodbye in style in their finest attire at their Ball at the Llwanroc Hotel on Thursday evening. Grand entrances were made with an array of transport ranging from tractors and motorbikes to Lamborghinis, limos and classic cars. Pupils were joined by their teachers at this significant point in their lives: a moment to celebrate all that they have achieved at Fowey River Academy and the opportunity for staff to wish them well for their exams ahead and their futures. The Pupils all looked stunning and made us feel extremely proud and privileged to be a part of their evening.

10 FRA: creative Drama Students of the Week: Ross Jezard and Jordan Crumpler REPORT BY Miss Hall Ross Jezard and Jordan Crumpler overcame adversity to complete a great terms work focused on making their own horror film. The duo have really immersed themselves into the development of the film and overcame a number of challenges to ensure it was complete to a high quality by the deadline. They have worked energetically alongside their group, exploring the genre of horror and the finished product is startling. Well done boys!

11 FRA: enriched FRA: competitive Girls Active: Fowey Girls find their reason REPORT BY Mrs Smith The girls from Fowey River Academy were selected to be involved in the making of a short film, which has been commissioned by the Youth Sport Trust to help promote their Girls Active Campaign. The Academy has been chosen to highlight and celebrate the success and progress that has been made in developing opportunities for girls in sport, along with healthy and enthusiastic attitudes that the girls at the Academy show towards active healthy lifestyles and all the rewards this brings. The aim of the film is to tell the story of the girls at Fowey River Academy and the sporting journey they have taken over the last year and will be used to help inspire other girls around the country to be more active. Filming took place on Friday 24th June and involved 80+ girls from Year Pupils were filmed in group situations taking part in some form of physical activity or leadership role, as well as some individual and group interviews. The pupils were asked to share their reasons for being active, experiences in sport/ physical activity and the benefits they have gained from their involvement. This film will be used as part of the promotional and training material for the national campaign and may be made available to view on the Youth Sport Trust website ( The girls at Fowey are truly inspirational in their commitment, enthusiasm and support for of each other and deserve this recognition.

12 FRA: enriched FRA: competitive Year 9 Pupils - On the Road to Rio REPORT BY Mrs Smith A group of Year 9 pupils have taken up the Road to Rio Challenge to cover the equivalent distance (9326km) from London's Olympic stadium to Rio's Olympic stadium. They are taking part in a variety of sporting challenges including Golf, Handball, BMX riding, tennis, Horse-riding and Triathlon to help them reach their target. The pupils are working extremely hard and have already won a set of exclusive Road to Rio T-shirts in recognition of their efforts so far. Sports Leaders in action at Fowey Primary Sports Day REPORT BY Mrs Smith Fowey Primary school hosted their annual Sports day at Fowey River Academy on Thursday 30th June. Sports Leaders from Fowey River Academy were on duty throughout the day to help set up and run the events as well as support the competitors to ensure they all had a fantastic day. Miss Counter from Fowey Primary said 'The girls were amazing - really helpful and lovely with the children'
