1 Westfields Infant School Newsletter Upcoming Events 25/7 Y2 Leavers Assembly Parents Invited 25/7 1.15pm School Closes for Summer Holiday The end of the school year is always a time to reflect on what we have achieved this year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank a wonderful staff team for their hard work and support. I would also like to thank parents for their many kind words and of course our fantastic children. As someone recently commented you can t be grumpy when you work with children. They certainly do put a smile on my face every day. The end of summer term is always tricky for us as we say goodbye to our Year 2 children and their families, although of course we do get to keep some of these families who have younger ones. Year 2 are more than ready for the juniors and we wish them all the best as they begin the next exciting stage of their learning journey. We also have to say goodbye to some members of staff. Sandra worked mainly as a Learning Support Assistant in Woodpecker Class. She will be greatly missed by us all. 2 Data Headlines 2017 We are once again thrilled with our end of year results. In every area where we submit results to the DfE we are well above National figures. Year R 77% of our children achieved the expected Good Level of Development. The figure was 70% of children nationally. Year 1 87% of our children achieved the expected standard in the phonics screening test. The figure nationally was 81%. Year 2 The table below shows the number of children who achieved the expected standard compared to the National figure Westfields Infants National Reading 85% 75% Writing 82% 68% Maths 81% 75% Our Summer Fair was a great success. There were many activities on offer including performances by Year 2 country dancers and the choir, a BBQ that was enjoyed by all and lots of games for the children. We raised an impressive total of 2800 which is going towards our ongoing improvements to the Key Stage 1 playground. There were over 100 entries in our minibeast competition and it proved very hard to choose some winners. Congratulations to everyone who took part. The minibeasts were amazing. Thank you to everyone for their support from donations of cakes, bottles and sweets to those who helped run a stall on the day. We would also like to thank all of the businesses who donated prizes to us.

3 We had a fantastic Creative Arts Week around the theme of Carnival. We began the week with an inspiring, motivating performance by irock s live band. We were visited on Tuesday by Mike Griffiths who performed and worked with the whole school on Drumming. He then went on to work with each Year R Class on creating a Samba rhythm. Year 2 also enjoyed drumming workshops later in the week with Mr Casselton. In art each class created bottle top pictures, which looked amazing! We also all made shakers. On Wednesday the children worked in mixed age groups to create their own headdress. All these creations were to be part of our own Westfields Infant School Carnival on the Friday. Each class had time in the hall to try out some Samba dance steps and to use our own school instruments to create some Samba music. Parents came and joined us for the celebration of all our learning in the carnival on Friday. It was amazing! School Council Bring and Buy Sale On Monday 17th July the School Council ran a Bring and Buy Sale to raise money for lunchtime activities. Thanks to your kind donations and the hard work of the School Council members, we raised 76. WISPA have donated 6000 towards playground improvements from their fundraising throughout this year. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been involved in organising these events and for all your donations. Choir We ve had a very successful year in Choir. So many performances and such wonderful confident singing. Thank you to each and every one of you. Have a lovely summer and if you re leaving us good luck in the future. Keep Singing!
