10 The Best Learning at Year 7 & 8 We call our curriculum at SGHS The Grid or The Flight Plan. It includes learning to learn and learning to live components. In Year 7 and 8 this has been used to design six learning packages at each year level as part of a two year programme of learning. A learning package is focussed on the real world that combines a number of essential learning areas from the NZ Curriculum to allow for transfer of understanding and a greater depth of learning. Each learning package is taught within homeroom and within specialist learning areas. This allows students to meet the big ideas and understandings in a range of contexts and ways. Each learning package in Year 7 is connected to a learning package in Year 8. This allows learners to develop understanding over time and sends the message that learning doesn t have an end point. For example, the Year 7 learning package Language and Culture develops into the Year 8 learning package Travel the World. Homeroom learning focusses on English, Social Studies and Health. Students also go to Art and Languages specialist classrooms to meet connected understandings. Learning packages are inquiries. This means that teachers will tune in to students prior knowledge, interests, needs and questions. They will then follow a process that includes finding out, sorting out, going further and reflecting. Often students, groups or classes will take action with their learning that involves them taking the learning out into the community in some way. It is the issues, concerns and topics which the girls identify for their inquiry which result in an authentic experience, a real life issue that can often be acted upon. The Best Thinking Tools: Habits of Mind All students use the 16 Habits of Mind, which are thinking tools enabling them to respond intelligently when approaching a new problem or situation. These are linked to our learning habits and are integral to students developing independent learning strategies.

11 Growing the Best Community: Community Breakout Citizenship and community are two learning to live concepts that are woven throughout the learning at Year 7 & 8, promoting opportunities for learning outside of the classroom and encouraging a contribution to the wider community. Each year begins with a week-long focus called Community Breakout where students develop skills and knowledge that will enable them to lead change in the community and environment. These skills and knowledge are the platform from which learning grows throughout the year. The Best Mathematical Contexts: Students are given authentic, hands-on situations taught through mathematical inquiry topics which develop their confidence and understanding. Mathematical rich tasks encourage the students to be active participants, solving real life experiences while learning the essential knowledge and skills of mathematics. A sample of our inquiry work including: Dream Bedrooms, Post It and Minecraft Mosaics which have all looked at using measurement features in different ways. Want to know more? 14 ERO s Voice Visionary Relationships The school s vision of a quality learning community where relationships count and excellence is expected, is highly evident throughout the school. The Board, Senior Leaders and Teachers have high expectations for the achievement of all students. Students are actively encouraged and supported to aspire to and achieve their own level of personal excellence. There is a strong focus on developing effective relationships with and between staff and students. Staff are collegial and work together for the benefit of all students. Teachers are purposefully involved in the plans and targets for school-wide improvements. Students ideas and opinions are making an increasingly important contribution to decisions about their learning. Connected Curriculum Leading Learning A strong focus is placed on providing for individual learning pathways for students to meet their level of challenge, need and interests. This is supported by flexible timetabling and multi-level teaching. Students learning benefits from curriculum breadth, a wide range of opportunities in and beyond the school, and co-operation between departments. Senior Leaders and Teachers use a wide range of learning information to inquire regularly into how effectively plans and initiatives support the school to improve. They track the progress of students to ensure that value is being added to their learning. Senior leaders also regularly monitor progress towards meeting achievement targets. Achievement Achievement information shows that National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) pass rates are above national comparisons for similar schools. In Years 9 and 10, school achievement information for 2012 shows that most students are achieving at or above curriculum expectations for reading and writing. In Years 7 and 8, most students are achieving at or above the National Standards in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. We are a five year ERO School.
