1 K E L S T O N G I R L S ' C O L L E G E April 2008 Principal s Newsletter Dear Parents This is the final week of Term 1. It has been a busy term, and much has been achieved. This week we have had a well attended Parent Report Evening. It is only with partnership between home and school that we can help your daughter to achieve learning success. I wish to thank our student leaders, led so capably be Head Girl Sarah Pavadai, for a magnificent start to the year. They are an energetic group of students who are proud to be members of Kelston Girls College. This term the student leaders organised the Junior Social, Mufti Day, Senior Social, the 2 day Exhibition highlighting the many activities students can join at our school, Top Town for Year 9 students, the Kelston Girls College / Kelston Boys High School Prefects Sports Competition and Fiafia. All of these events were well organised and provided safe fun for all. Thank you girls! Congratulations to Sophia Chan and Rachel Allan who have been chosen to attend the Auckland Regional Council Environmental Camp. Congratulations also to Rachel Allan who has been chosen to represent Auckland Secondary students at the Youth Forum in Wellington. Sarah Pavadai and Sina Eti will attend a leadership conference at St Cuthberts College in the second week of the holidays. Sina Eti and her band also perform in a Secondary School Talent Quest in Wellington in the holidays. Congratulations to Rangitarewa Ihakara who has been chosen to spend a week at Otago University in Term 2. Congratulations to Sadia Motawaze and Merel Flannigan who have been chosen to attend the Gifted and Talented Programme at Selwyn College in the holidays. Term 1 Reports were posted to parents last week and in Term 2, examinations will be held from 23 rd May to 30 th May. My thanks to all staff for the help and support they have given the young women in their care, this term. May you all enjoy a peaceful and safe May vacation. Linda Fox Principal From the Kelston Girls Board Recently our Board Called a meeting of all the Kelston school boards to discuss ways in which we can work together to support our schools and our Principals in the Kelston Area. It was an excellent meeting and well represented by all Boards. The Kelston Girls College BOT wishes to acknowledges the support of parents for their daughters learning this term. Assistance from teachers and senior students. Why Go? Developing good study and homework habits in Years 9 and 10 prepares students for academic success. NCEA Certificates at Levels 1, 2 and 3 are what employers and Tertiary Institutions refer to. Sporting, cultural and home responsibilities put pressure on students. The homework centre provides a quiet, safe, well resourced place to study. When? Katrina was Kelston Girls College Head Girl in 2000 and is now a lawyer. Our best wishes to them both. Community ICT Afternoon There will be a Sunday afternoon session for parents and families early in Term 2 at Kelston Girls College to help show users how to use the internet, file management and various software. 3 Winter Uniform for Term 2 and 3 Students must wear lace up black school shoes, with either black or white socks or plain black or flesh coloured pantyhose. Students will need a school jersey as the cold months are approach ing. The school plain blue rain jacket is a good idea for the wet weather, but this may not be worn in the classroom. It is a good idea for seniors to wear the blue zip up polo fleece. The only jewellery to be worn watches, stud or small sleeper earrings and a necklace of cul tural significance may be worn if it hangs below the collar line of the school shirt. The school shirt, skirt or trousers of the blue or ruby colour are key items. FOR the winter terms two and three a plain white polo skivvy (not a large collar) may be worn only if it is worn under the school jersey or vest. Those students who misinterpret these guidelines will have items confiscated and these items will not be returned to them until the end of term. Parents may phone the level dean with any questions they wish to ask about the school uniform. Have a Safe and Happy Holiday. *******************

Waitakere Tag Out Trust 2008 Talofa. Just how do police and others know the number of graffiti vandals/taggers there are in a community? Every tag mark, be it on/in a school, public building or on a home owner s fence is photographed before being removed. Photos are flicked through to the police data base and grouped accordingly. Taggers cannot change their tags because they would lose their fame! Hence they can be tracked. If you have been cleaning up such marks on your own property, it would help to photograph the tags and send them to the police. Performers, stalls, and the chance to try a range of arts activities inlcuding weaving, painting, clay work, paper making, junk art assemblages, printmaking, building a sculpture, and storytelling. More opportunities for young people through OSCAR Extended Services McLaren Park and Henderson South Community Initiative will be offering an After School Service from the beginning of Term 2 for 5 to 14 year olds at Henderson South School. This is in addition to its existing holiday programme and enrolments are available to all children in the Henderson South area. This affordable, fun programme has been developed with children and parents to appeal to older children too. Activities include regular drama and singing sessions leading to a talent quest at the end of the programme; children setting up an edible garden to grow plants, learn about the seasons, develop an understanding of healthy food, and eat the results; and a wellbeing programme which will include voluntary service, physical activities and business enterprise. It s great to see young people spending their time after school doing things that are fun, engaging and contribute to their long term wellbeing, says Auckland Regional Director, Losalina McAlpine. Meaningful out of school activities can have positive effects on children and young people s academic, social, emotional and physical wellbeing. At the same time good access to quality out of school services gives parents more choice around how they balance their work and family life. The Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education and other agencies are working together to introduce 12 new Extended Services around the country over the next three years. These programmes are being rolled out as part of the Government s 5 year action plan for Out of School Services.
