1 S T. MARY S H E N L E Y Newsletter Class One Class Two On Tuesday we enjoyed a delicious Chinese meal at Sans (more details on page 5). As you can see from this photo, noodles can be very tricky if you re 4. Class Three We have been learning how to cut fruit. We made a healthy fruit Supertato using Weetabix. We really enjoyed it and there were many empty bowls by the end. Class Four This week, we made Valentine s Day cards with a difference. Mrs Cooke helped us make cards with messages of love in French which we got to take home. Class Five We have continued to read Michael Morpego s book, Running Wild and written our own short stories from the Mother s point of view. This enhanced our creativity and helped us to further develop the characters from considering another perspective. We have been learning about how we can make and use certain 3D shapes in our castle drawbridge project. We experimented with cutting/constructing.

Instead of afternoon tea on 16 th March we will now be hosting a Mother s Day breakfast at 9am on Friday 9 th March. All of the mums with children in years R, 1 & 2 are welcome to join us. For space reasons we are limited to one person per family but if you are working you are welcome to send a female relative in your place. FOSM Mother s Day Raffle The school parliament will be running a Mother s Day raffle on behalf of FOSM. For the chance of winning 1 of 3 fabulous prizes for Mum/Grandma please bring 1 in to school on 9 th March. Race Night Tickets are now on sale from the school office for FOSM s race night on 9 th March. Horses and sponsorships are also available. Please speak to Mads, Emma or Katie on the playground. Parent Pay Dinner money balances should always be in credit and never fall below 0. The school is charged when accounts are in debt. After Easter, these charges will be passed on to parents. Did you know you can set up or text alerts within ParentPay so they contact you when your balance reaches 0? alerts are free but there is a charge for text alerts. World Book Day Children are invited to come into school on Thursday 1 st March in costume to celebrate World Book Day. Please come as your favourite character from a book, there will be prizes for the best costumes. Anyone not wishing to participate is welcome to come in uniform as normal.

3 Page 3 School news Fantastic Gymnastics On Monday 12 th February some children from year 2 represented the school in a gymnastics competition at Kineton High School. The team needed to perform a routine which included a teddy bear roll. The children selected from year 2 were those who mastered this tricky manoevre as lots of them found it challenging. They did a fantastic job, got to go on the trampoline, made Mr Green proud and finished a respectable fifth.

4 Page 4 School news Warwick Castle On a wet and cold Tuesday pupils from years 2, 3 and 4 visited Warwick Castle. Determined not to let the weather spoil the day they went in the Horrible Histories Maze, walked around the Great Hall and saw lots of creepy things (according to Issy). They also watched an archery show and had a talk from an expert on Meet the Monarchy. It was a great end to this half term and both classes are excited about learning more on their topics (Castles and Royalty) in the next half term.

5 Page 5 School news Kung Hei Fat Choy Friday 16 th February is Chinese New Year. As the school is closed for teacher training on this day we celebrated it a little early this year. On Tuesday, Reception children visited Sans Restaurant on the High St for a delicious Chinese lunch. They sampled new food such as noodles, spare ribs and sweet and sour chicken and saw the colourful Chinese Dragon up close. Our thanks and gratitude to Dennis and Emily at Sans for their wonderful hospitality and generosity.

6 Page 6 School news Ash Wednesday On Wednesday, we recognised the start of Lent with a special Ash Wednesday mass with Father Damian. It was lovely to see the hall full of pupils, parents and parishioners to mark this special time of year. Kit and Sam did a wonderful job playing the guitar to the opening hymn, Charlotte, Hugo, Theo and Brooke read beautifully and all 10 Confirmation children sang a stunning version of We Rise Again From Ashes. Before the service, parishioner John Burke spoke to the key stage two children to encourage more of them to volunteer to be altar servers at church. He explained the importance of altar servers, answered their questions and hopefully alleviated some of their nerves. He will be at mass every week until Easter to altar serve with any new children and give them first hand training on the job. We would love the Confirmation children to serve at the Holy Communion mass and vice versa. Please could the sacramental children check the diary and ensure they are at mass for the date of their confession in March.

7 Artwork of the week Page 7 Pupil Achievements Birthday Corner Happy Birthday to Alvina who is 5 on 24 th February & Albert who is 8 on 26 th February. Mr Walker set Class 4 the challenge of creating a poster about reptiles; those that can be tamed and those that can t. The children had to do quite a lot of research before choosing how to present their work. Haytham is this week s artwork winner for this large informative and resourceful poster (#loveupcycling). They need to learn the poem off by heart and they are welcome to use costumes or props to enhance their performance. Auditions will be with Miss Armstrong on Tuesday 27 th February and successful children will be chosen to perform at the poetry recital final at 3pm on Friday 9 th March.
