1 2018 Lent Term No. 8 Newsletter Equestrian success for Year 10 pupil Holly During the Easter break Holly will travel to Belgium where she will be preparing for the European selection process for the Pony European Championship Team. We are very proud and wish her the best of luck. News story here: Congratulations to Year 12 pupil Jack Jack has been successful in his application for a five day residential EDT Headstart course in Oceanography and Marine Biology at Southampton University in July - one of only 30 places available. He will be involved in collecting samples from Southampton Water and the Solent using the university's teaching and research vessel, Callista. Working in small teams, he will spend two days at sea developing a themed study of an aspect of the region's marine environment and his remaining time will be spent processing data in both the Biology laboratory and the computer suite. This will give him something of note to include in his personal statement when he applies for university.

2 Guinness World Record It is a great honour and pleasure to inform you that our Guinness World Record attempt last year for the largest Saturday Night (by Whigfield) Dance was a success!! The Guinness website has been updated to state that Hull Collegiate School is the current record holder with 325 participants. The school has been issued an official certificate which will be displayed near reception shortly. Any staff and pupils who took part can now apply for their certificates and other merchandise. Forms are available at both the senior and prep receptions. Orders must be returned to Miss Groves by 30 April please. Pupils and staff who stewarded, witnessed and filmed the event can apply for certificates of participation. We are planning another record attempt in June for the most people wearing inflated swimming armbands (water wings) which will be open to all staff and pupils in Senior and Prep School. You must provide your own armbands but there will be some available to buy from school after May half term. Participants must apply to take part by Friday 15 June in order for the event to be planned efficiently... more details and application form to follow. 4 Careers Breakfast Meetings in March in the Drawing Room Open to all pupils in Years Wednesday 14 March Alison Goddard BBA, MBA (Proj Mgnt), PMP Alison is Director of Project Management, Pain Pillar, and Neuroscience at PPD. Alison has 18+ years experience managing and overseeing Global Clinical Research in the pharmaceutical industry. Monday 19 March - Professor Brad Gibson Professor Gibson joined Hull University in 2015 and established the E.A Milne Centre for Astrophysics. One of the country's most influential scientists, his 300 publications have amassed 20,000 citations from his peers. His research was named a Top 10 News Story of the year by National Geographic; with the Hubble Space Telescope, he determined the expansion rate of the Universe, for which his team was awarded the Gruber Prize in Cosmology. Brad discovered that our Milky Way is cannibalising its neighbours, the Magellanic Clouds. A world-renowned expert in using supercomputers to model the distribution of chemical elements throughout the Universe, Gibson's team are Hull's research stars. Professor Gibson will be spending the morning at school talking with all GCSE and A Level pupils. This breakfast meeting is an opportunity for pupils to meet him on a smaller scale. Places will be limited so please book at your earliest convenience. If you are interested in doing this course, which will give you a three year first aid qualification, please see Miss Groves for a letter. Team Uganda 2019 Pupils who are currently in Years 11 and 12 will shortly be invited to apply for a place on Team Uganda This very exciting opportunity to go on a life changing trip will run in July 2019 and the costs is usually around There are many fundraising events throughout the year and the first of these is the raffle held during the interval of the school play. We need two people on Tuesday 13, Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 March. If you are interested in helping then please see Miss Groves. Priority applications will be given to pupils who have already shown some interest in raising money for the trip. There is also a bag pack at Morrison's in Anlaby arranged for Friday 14 July. 5 Future Music Department Events Spring Music Concert Thursday 22 March 19:00 Radcliffe Hall Featuring the Collegiate Chorus, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Guitar Group and various solos Exhibition by Art teacher Mr Doncaster You are invited to come along and see an exhibition of table sculptures currently on display in the main foyer. These beautiful pieces of art have been created by Art teacher Mr Doncaster. The exhibition will run for the next two weeks. More information here:

7 Staff v Old Collegians 5-a-Side Football The Old Collegians 5-a-side football competition saw over 35 Old Collegians return to play in a fun competition last Saturday. Unfortunately the staff team didn t win!

9 Hull 10K Running for Hope We are taking part in this year s Hull 10K in memory of Hope Rooms. You are welcome to join our team, please carrie.mertens@hullcollegiateschool.
