It was a real pleasure to see so many students participating enthusiastically in all the activities, both the team ones and the whole house ones. Junior House Day began with a Kapa Haka performance by Nga mauri taniwha ki uta (aka Taniwha Ventures), a roopu with a number of Rosehill past students. The junior students were an attentive and appreciative audience for the polished performance which set the tone for an excellent day. Rangatahi House was the winner on points congratulations to them! Congratulations to all the Year 9 and Year 10 award winners who were recognised at the assemblies on Monday or at Wednesday s prizegivings. A list of recipients is included in this newsletter. Junior students received their reports on Wednesday morning before the Prizegivings. Beginning of Year 2019 Parents/caregivers can expect an in the middle of January which will include school start dates, information about stationery requirements, school fees etc. If you have not received the by 16 January when our office opens, please do not hesitate to phone and we will ensure you get the information. 3 Flynn Adams gains top Mark in New Zealand CEM Kiwi Science Competition University of Canterbury s Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) run the annual Kiwi Science competition. Flynn Adams achieved an Excellence grade, the percentile ranking 100 %, and with Stanine 9. He has been the top student in New Zealand among all Year 10 s who participated in this competition. It is an outstanding achievement for Rosehill College and we all applaud Flynn Adams for this. Radio Satellite Astronomy Trip to Warkworth On 7th December 2018, sixty selected Year 10 students attended the Radio Satellite Astronomy Trip to Warkworth. Students utilised this opportunity to get first-hand experience on New Zealand s contribution in Pulsar Research. A pulsar is a celestial object, which is thought to be a rapidly rotating neutron star that emits regular pulses of radio waves and other electromagnetic radiation at rates of up to one thousand pulses per second. Neutron stars are thought to be formed by the gravitational collapse of the remnants of a massive star after a supernova explosion, provided that the star is insufficiently massive to produce a black hole. Students also interacted with some of the leading Astronomers working at the AUT satellite station and also learned how the chemicals in various celestial objects are analysed using absorption spectroscopy. A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT OFFICE The Student Office would like to thank all the RUNNERS we have had working in the office throughout the year. It is a very important job with responsibilities, giving students valuable experience in an office environment at the same time as giving them a good grounding on how the school works. We look forward to seeing some of them again next year. We wish all students a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year! Anmoljit Ghuman Paige Tapara Student Success Anmoljit, who completed Year 13 this year, has been selected as Youth MP for the Papakura electorate at Youth Parliament in Papakura MP Judith Collins chose Anmoljit as her representative who will be tenured from March 1 until August 31. Paige left Rosehill College in 2015 and she has just been featured with her single 'Alignments' on Radio New Zealand and is releasing her debut album in the New Year. Click here to hear Alignments. Remember her name, she is going to go very far! Emma Fell Emma left Rosehill College in 2013 and has, for the second year in a row, been chosen to represent New Zealand in the NZ Women s Floorball team. She is off to Singapore and Thailand in January for the tournament. Floorball is a game similar to hockey but played indoors with plastic equipment and consists of five players and a goalkeeper in each team. She finishes her Architectural studies in March next year and she recently received a $10,000 grant to complete a full scale prototype model of her thesis subject about which she was a speaker at a conference in Melbourne last month. She continues to play hockey in Wellington with her team winning the championship and Emma receiving Player of the Year. She also received a Blue s Sporting Award from Victoria University.
