1 The Communicator Volume Volume 2 Issue Issue May June Principals Message It is with mixed emotions that I say farewell to Morag Bouch, our reliable, loving and dedicated Business Manager who is retiring after 22 years at Coatesville. Having such a skilled and knowledgeable Business Manager has allowed us to effectively and efficiently fund the educational programs that improve student outcomes. Morag is well respected by the network of business managers who regularly call on her expertise and advice. The school financial landscape is one that is fraught with peculiarities and pitfalls that are specific to Victorian education. Knowing how to extract every bit of value out of this strange system is Morag s speciality and this has benefited students in our school to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars over her tenure. She has treated hundreds of broken arms, blood noses, headaches and sore tummies, over the years in sick bay. Sometimes a cuddle and some reassurance has been her most effective treatment method, but when an ambulance or an Epipen is required, she is cool and calm and ensures that the student, or staff member, receives the medical care they need in the most efficient time-frame. It has been an honour and a privilege to have worked with you Morag and I know that the staff, the parents and the children will miss her. We all wish you the best of luck in the next phase of your life with your husband Ian and hope that you now have the time and freedom to do all the things that your heart desires.

2 Curriculum Day- Kath Murdoch On Monday 26 th June we had a curriculum day with inquiry learning guru Kath Murdoch. Our focus for the day was Nurturing Learning Assets in the Inquiry Classroom wherby we were looking at how we can more effectively focus on transdisciplinary skill development alongside knowledge acquisition. Here is an example of what this might look like in the classroom during a maths lesson: Knowledge focus How to collect and organise data to show patterns or trends Transdiciplinary skills Time management- How much time do we spend doing the survey? How long we will need to collate and display the data? Students can create a schedule for their data study breaking down the key tasks Group decision making- How does each group decide what they will collect data on? Students might each submit their interest and vote to make a decision. Coatesville PS Mission Statement To nurture the educational journey of all within the school community, so that we aspire higher, through an engaging and relevant inquiry based curriculum that empowers us to be internationally minded, life long learners. In the afternoon session we specifically looked at designing our lessons to more effectively cater for the explicit development of these transdisciplinary skills and how we can teach these skills in ways that are interesting and engaging for students. 3 Happy Holidays It has been another amazing term at Coatesville. Through our Department and IB self-studies, we have been critically reflecting on our purpose and practices so that we can design our strategic direction for the next four years. I would like to thank all of the students and parents who have provided us with feedback via the forums and also through the digital survey. This survey will remain open throughout the holidays and I encourage all parents to contribute their ideas and opinions. I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holidays and we will see you all energised and ready to go in Term 3. Michael Jones - Principal e-smart Cyber Safety Education This term the Junior Years e-smart Team have been working with the Prep students as a part of our 2017 e-smart plan. Grade 6 students Harry, Elise, Zalie, Rori and Maya collaboratively planned and executed lessons with a learning focus on differentiating between real people and fictional characters. Congratulations to these students for successfully peer and team teaching. We look forward to them working with the Grade 1 students next term to continue our e-smart learning journey. 4 PYP PYP Exhibition Update This week in Exhibition the Grade 6 students have been working hard to form their own questions about their topic and develop their 3 Lines of Inquiry. Students have been both problem posers and problem solvers as they examined the complexity of their issue and form generalisations. Throughout the week students have had the opportunity to: - Engage with their topic - Gauge their own personal interest and attitude towards their issue - Find out what other students believe (understandings and misconceptions) - Share what they already know and believe about their issue To be effective inquirers this week, students needed to: - Identify what it is they want to know and do - Pose, sort and organise their own questions - Present their thoughts in different ways - Reflect on what they have discovered - Think about ways of applying their questions to the next phase of Exhibition Over the holiday break students will be: - Gathering information (Identifying and locating various resources) - Sorting information (Considering different perspectives) I wish each of the students the best of luck over the holiday break and I look forward to seeing all the information they seek out in order to answer their wonderings. 5 Around the Grades GRADE 4 SCIENCE FAIR As part of UOI 3: How the World Works Grade 4 has been inquiring into forces and how they have a varying effect on people and objects. Throughout this unit they used their research skills to investigate a chosen force and on Tuesday 20 th June each student presented their understandings in the first Grade 4 Science Fair. Every Grade 4 student created their own display (which included posters, websites, models, demonstrations, quizzes, PowerPoints and so much more) and shared their knowledge with their buddy class, the Grade 5 students and teachers, and a number of family members. 6 Sport It has been a big week for sport at Coatesville Primary School. On Monday the Southern Metro Regional Cross Country was held. Lucas finished 33rd overall in the 9/10 boys 2km race. Hamish finished 4th overall in the 11yr boys 3km race. Zach finished 31st in the 11yr boys 3km race. Cooper finished 32nd in the 11yr boys 3km race. Well done on what is an amazing achievement and good luck at the State Finals Hamish! On Thursday it was time for the Winter Inter-school Sport Finals. Sofcross: Both A and B teams competed hard all day with the A team finishing 3rd overall and the B team finishing 4th overall. AFL: After a nail biting win in the semi finals over Oakleigh South, Coatesville lined up against St Pauls in the final. In what was an extremely high standard of football, Coatesville finished second overall after losing the final by 8 points. Soccer: Both the boys and girls teams were in action after finishing the season on top of the ladder. The boys team won the semi final easily and won the final 3-1 even after giving up an early goal. The girls team had a tighter contest in the semi but were able to win the final easily 3-1. Good luck to both soccer teams at the Division level next term. Friday was the annual House Athletics carnival At Duncan Mackinnon. Luckily for the students in grade 4-6 the weather Was a lot drier than last year. A big thanks to all the parents and staff that helped out on the day. Ribbons will be awarded at a special assembly in the 2:40 this Thursday. 7 coatesville champions league 2017 Thank you to all the students that have signed up for the Coatesville Champions League lunchtime soccer tournament. If you were away on the day of the sign ups, or simply forgot please come and see Mrs Taylor and she will put you into a team. The teams have been created and are on display on the PE Office window. Just a reminder that each team is allocated a team colour which needs to be worn for the game (a plain t-shirt is fine), as well as soccer shorts (without pockets), soccer socks and shin guards. The tournament will kick off in the first week of Term 3.
