Diaries are a great way to have efficient communication between home and school. We encourage you to write anything that you need to communicate with the teachers in these diaries. This way we can be up to date with what is happening in your child s life, and ensure that we are meeting all of their needs as learners. Diaries will be checked by homeroom teachers daily. Please ensure that nightly reading is logged in their diaries with the title of the book and how long they read for. An adult s signature is required for home reading. General Reminders Students are given time during the school day to have an additional fruit snack. Please ensure that your child comes to school with a piece of fruit to eat during this time. Students are required to have drink bottles in the classroom so they stay well hydrated. Only water is allowed, no cordials or other drinks are allowed in these bottles please. It would also be great if these are named. It is vital that all school jumpers and jackets are named. Please ensure that this is done as soon as possible. There are lots of jumpers in lost property. Please ask your child to check at the office if they have lost any uniform items. We are encouraging students to bring a pair of slippers to change into when they are working in the classroom. Slippers can remain at school in their bag boxes or taken home each day. It is also worth putting a spare pair of socks into their bags as some students are accidently stepping in puddles in the yard. Homework and Home Reading Homework is an important part of the learning journey and students are encouraged to complete it each week to the best of their ability. Homework is due each Friday. We appreciate your support in assisting your child to establish their homework and home reading routines. If you have any difficulties accessing the websites, please see your classroom teacher. Expectations for each week: Mathletics: Complete 5 tasks to reach a minimum of 500 points. Encourage your child to use a notepad/paper to show their working out. Spellodrome: Complete spelling activities to reach a minimum of 300 points. Reading: Read each night for at least 15 minutes. Wushka and/or Reading Eggspress (via Reading Eggs) may be used to access online books. All reading is expected to be recorded in student diaries. Please include the name of the book and pages/chapters read. Please note: All student Wushka passwords are: Password1 Thank you for your support in helping your child to establish strong homework routines.

2 Cranbourne Botanic Gardens Excursion Our Year 3 and 4 students had a fabulous time on our excursion to the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens on Thursday. They participated in two programs during the day: Shared Country: Students discovered the importance of the environment to the Koolin people and how plants were used for food, fibre, medicine and tools. They went on a discovery walk, examined artefacts, created ochre art and tried some plant foods. Sustainable Gardening: Students learned how to be creative while understanding how to conserve our precious biodiversity and our water resources. In groups, students work-shopped a landscape design, created a mulch sculpture, potted up a plant and looked at worm farming. Students will apply their new learning and experiences to their classroom learning, particularly to their Sustainability and Science rotations, as well as to literacy activities. We were very impressed with the behavior and enthusiasm of the students on the day. They were positive role models for our school! 2

3 Term 3 Rotations Science This term in Science, students have been looking into living and nonliving things. By studying both plants and animals, they have been looking at how living things thrive and survive in their habitats. Last week, the students walked around the boundaries of the school and examined how insects make their homes at Wilandra Rise. They found many interesting creatures and really enjoyed bringing out their inner entomologist. Sustainability At Wilandra Rise Primary School, the Year 3/4s have been learning about environmental sustainability. Students are gaining a better understanding about the impact that landfill and plastic has on our environment and what we can do to reduce, reuse and recycle. Each group have created their own compost bottle using left over food scraps to observe and monitor the changes. At the end of this term and beginning of next term, we re hoping to create a Nude Food Day at Wilandra Rise. We re aiming to reduce our impact on the environment through the elimination of waste, and foster the education of students through healthier eating habits! Sustainability Photos: What is Nude Food? Nude food is any food without the additional packaging. The idea is to eliminate the unnecessary waste created from food wrappers and packaging. How can I achieve this? Building a lunch box full of Nude Food is easy! Think of anything without wrappers- fruits, vegetables, sandwiches without cling wrap- there are lots of options! 4 Book Week This week, the Year 3s and 4s celebrated Book Week by enjoying a number of Australian award winning picture story books. On Wednesday morning, the students took part in a Book Parade, where they dressed up and paraded as their favourite characters. Some of the students reflected on their experiences: Shekinah (Year 3): I got dressed up as a pirate from The Night Pirates. I thought that it was fantastic because everyone was dressed up as different characters and they all looked unique. Kabir (Year 3): I got dressed up as Don from the Ninja Turtles. I liked the Book Parade because it was really good walking around with all of the kids cheering us on and supporting us. Sophia (Year 4): Today I dressed up as a pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean. I think that it was amazing because there were lots of people wearing costumes and decorations. 4 Writing This term in Writing, students have been investigating the structure and features of Information Reports. They have been creating an information book on a fictional country and detailing its features including location, landmarks, traditional foods, celebrations and native plants and animals. We have been impressed by our students creativity, whilst linking art, mapping, science, geography and reading by linking their knowledge of non-fiction texts to their reports. In 2018, our Year 3 and 4 students will be attending Camp Adanac (Spelled Canada backwards!) on the first 3 days of Term 2: Monday 16 th April- Wednesday 18 th April Please save the date in your diaries/calendar/phone. The camp will be 2 nights and 3 days. The camp program provides opportunities for relationship building and development of interpersonal skills in a fun relaxed environment. More information will be sent out early in Term 1, 2018.

5 Year 3 and 4 Art Here is some of the artwork our students created, based on the work of the contemporary artist, Sandra Silberzweig. They look amazing! Students drew the outline of a face and went over the lines with glue. They then used chalk pastels to colour and blend, before adding patterns. Students had to use the colour wheel to choose analogous colours (colours that sit next to each other). Father s Day Celebration Fathers/Step-Fathers/Grandfathers/Uncles are invited to come along and celebrate our Father s Day Afternoon! Come and have some fun with us at school so we can celebrate how special you are! Date: Friday 1st of September 2017 Time: 2:30-3:20pm Place: Year 3 and 4 Learning Community Room (Roald Dahl Building) Compass Positive Classroom/Yard Behaviour Chronicles You may notice from time to time that your child has been recognized for positive behaviours in the yard and/or classroom and this will appear on your child s page on Compass. Students may be recognized for helping others, showing persistence, taking responsible risks, striving for accuracy and thinking interdependently. These are linked to the Habits of Mind that have been introduced to students this year. 5
