4 Summer Thoughts From Your National President I hate to continue to say that this year has flown by, but man, how true is that? Our time of being together for our 106 th National Convention is quickly approaching. Vancouver, Washington, in the beautiful Northwest is the setting for this year s convention. I can t think of a more scenic location to celebrate our annual coming together. You will enjoy the Heathman Lodge; it is a warm and welcoming hotel that is excited to host our sorority and it has a five star restaurant. There is much to see and experience in the area; check out the tours that are available. In talking with various sorority sisters, many are coming in early or staying after convention to take advantage of the area and all it offers, making this a real vacation. On a personal note, I am loving the idea of National Convention in a location that doesn t have the summer heat and humidity of our usual locations. I won t be saying my whinny mantra of It s so humid! as I wipe sweat from my forehead. I am such a CA girl, especially in the summer. Just a few reminders before we meet in July: we will again be using the voting cards this year for legislation. There will be no up-down, up-down for each vote! Also, Motion Forms will be available at the front of the meeting room. If you plan on making a motion, please get your Motion Form early and have it filled out. Your chapter should have received the legislation packet by now. Please read it over and discuss with all your members. You will see that there are several cost effective changes being proposed. Unfortunately, Delta Theta Tau Sorority is facing a difficult time and needs to tighten its belt. The amount of philanthropy money given in past years has not been changed to reflect the economic times. The economic downturn, rising prices, as well as declining membership has seriously affected our bottom line. Interest rates are almost nonexistent, one of our larger funds earned only $17.00 this past year in interest. We have had three chapters and four alum associations disband this year alone. Many of our members are of an age that continuing to be active in sorority is difficult for them and as much as they love Delta Theta Tau, they are unable to continue due to age and illness. Proposed legislation to raise dues has been submitted by one of our chapters. I know no one likes the idea of paying more for dues, but if you look at the dues requirement for other national organizations, you will find that we are on the low, low end of the amount of dues that are charged to belong to these organizations. 5 (Continued from page 4) NATIONAL PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The National Officers have been diligent this year in cutting costs whenever possible. We held an / conference call midyear that saved sorority over $6000. The National Minutes will be put on the website, saving over $1000 in printing costs. Visitations for are being reviewed for possible suspension. Delta Theta Tau Sorority is a business and as such it has substantial operating costs, even being as cost efficient as possible. It is unrealistic to think that we can continue to operate our sorority in the same manner we did ten years ago, even five years ago.yet that is what is happening. We are powerful women. We have kept our sorority strong and viable through world wars, depressions, and economic booms and busts. We will continue this legacy as we guide Delta Theta Tau Sorority through the current bumps in the road. I am reminded of Rosie the Riveter who stepped up and kept the factories going when the men went to war.and then didn t want to go back into the house when the husbands came home.the women liked working and being productive, contributing!! We will do what we need to do. I can t begin to tell you the number of heartwarming stories I have heard from the women of chapters/assocs that are disbanding. Often with tears in their eyes, they tell me of their long years of membership and how sorority has enriched their lives; many wishing they could continue their membership, yet are forced by age and illness into difficult changes. On a happy note, I would like to wish June Capp a wonderful 100 th birthday!! I met June the first year I was a National Officer, as Western Counselor. She was one of the first visitations I was assigned as a new officer. We went out for breakfast, had a great conversation and I spent some time looking through her many photo albums of sorority pictures. Oh, I forgot to mention that June keeps her alum association active, and she is the only member. We have kept in touch since that first meeting and I stop by to visit whenever I am in Southern California. June is a valued part of my sorority experience and a shining example of What Women Want. Happy Birthday, June!! I look forward to seeing you in Vancouver, it won t be long now.. Delta Love, Dona Mostafa National President APRIL PRESIDENT S BLOG I certainly had no idea when I took over as your National President that I would be so immersed in technology. To date I have been involved in over 12,000.yes, 12,000 s, sending and receiving since last July. I have chaired meetings where the women participating were in locations all over the United States, yet were all talking at once on the phone. I have skyped, texted, tweeted, shared face time, read ebooks, posted on Face Book and surfed the web. It is mind boggling. 5

6 How many of you remember those typing classes we had to take, with the huge old manual typewriters that we had to pound to get the keys to strike? And remember the carbon paper? Now we can copy a zillion people in just a matter of seconds with a letter we have zipped through on the computer and used spell check. No more using eraser tape or that new invention White Out to fix our mistakes. Land lines are becoming a thing of the past, much like the rotary phone, and I understand this. Why pay for two phones when one serves the purpose? It s an economic thing, like ing instead of sending something through the postal service. We are into quick, easy, and efficient; technology serves all these purposes. Technology has certainly made our lives easier but there is a downside to it as well. I may connect via with huge numbers of people on any given day, in all areas of the United States, yet I have few personal conversations. I miss this. I miss calling people on the phone, putting my feet up and having a good conversation with someone, catching up and hearing what is going on in their life; laughing and talking, sharing information. A lot can be gathered from a person s voice; how they are feeling, how life is treating them, how they are relating to me.truly connecting in a personal way. I will continue to , skype, text, tweet, surf the web, share face time, read ebooks and post on Face Book, but it is the ringing phone that makes my heart beat faster.. I am going to talk a little bit about our Website How many of you have been on the Delta Theta Tau Website lately???? If you haven t you really need to check it out. At our Province Conventions we talked about What Women Want. The website was one of the things that a lot of our sisters wanted to see some improvement. Our Webmaster, Eileen Williams, has been working very hard to make changes & improvements to the website. Go to the Information page and see what s new. For one thing you will notice that she has put the newest issue of GRIT on there. Just click on it and you will be able to read your GRIT from any computer or your phone if you have internet on it. If you need information that is always in the GRIT you can now get it right at your fingertips. Right now the Liability Insurance Form which is due by August 1 st is also on there and can be downloaded anytime. There is a new Events page. If you want to know anything about National Convention in July you can go here and find out the Heathman Lodge information which includes a slide show of pictures of the hotel, Convention Events, Tour information, and your Registration Forms. 6

7 She has also added a page for Province Conventions. Right now the information on that page is from our past province conventions but she will update that soon. Under Construction is a Members Only page. This page will be for members only so they can post things that only members will be able to see. I think Eileen is doing a great job with our website. If there is something that you would like to see on the website just let one of the National Officers know and we will let Eileen know and if it can be done we will do our best to make it happen. Hope you have all made your reservations for National Convention. I am looking forward to seeing you all in Vancouver in July. You have donated $593,330 and 140,076 volunteer hours in 2013 alone. That deserves a BIG pat on the back!!! Stop and think what kind of impact your chapter has made in your community. You should have received your Form 52s by now. Please make sure to complete them accurately and send them in to your Province Chairman by August 1 st. We are very interested to see what your chapter is doing in the name of Delta Theta Tau Sorority. It has been my privilege to serve you as Secretary of Philanthropy this year. As I gather information for my reports, it amazes me on what we are able to accomplish in the name of philanthropy. This is truly a rewarding position. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Vancouver, WA for National Convention. As we give, we find that sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven. 9 Director of Expansion & Growth It is Spring and it has been long awaited. The signs of growth and renewal are everywhere from the tree tops to sprouts shooting up from the ground. It is the hope of sunshine and warm weather. After the severe weather this past winter, these signs are a welcome change. As we think of growth, my thoughts turn to Delta Theta Tau and how to start new chapters and also new members to our existing chapters. I have a contact in Delaware, OH and St. Louis, MO. These ladies are interested in starting a new chapter in their areas. If you know of any women near these areas that we could contact to get these chapters started, please let me know. It would be wonderful to get these two chapters chartered as soon as possible. In terms of change, it is happening in Delta Theta Tau as well. This past February, your National Officers conducted their mid-year meeting via telephone. Considering the challenges; it went very well and saved the sorority a significant amount of money. Another change about to happen will be a change in the DEG position. I have asked not to be reappointed. It has been my honor and privilege to have been DEG for the past three years. I have enjoyed working with the National Officers and the PEGs during this time. It was my pleasure to have installed Omicron Psi Chapter, Red Bud, IL. Changes are healthy and necessary to create an environment for growth in any organization. It is important to keep fresh, new ideas coming into the group. It is my hope that this change will benefit the expansion and growth of this sorority. I have enjoyed serving in this position which allowed me to meet new friends and renew old acquaintances. I hope I have left a footprint on the Delta Theta Tau history path. Very best wishes and great success to my successor and I pledge my full support to the Delt that will follow me. I hope I will be able to serve Delta Theta Tau again at sometime in the future. Mel Alpha PEG Pat Mote What five high schools girls wanted was to be a part of the Tyrolean Club of Muncie High School. After several months these girls became dissatisfied and started their own club, Delta Theta Tau Sorority. On the evening of October 16, 1903, five girls met in the home of Bess Gordon and reorganized as Delta Theta Tau Sorority. New colors and a new constitution were drafted. That midnight they enjoyed an oyster supper and sleepover. Their meetings were like get togethers with the aim to meet boys with dancing being the recreation of the times. Betsy Gordon Gibert attributed the survival of our sorority to the Delt mothers. Frances Gordon would plan parties and kept bringing the girls together. Deltas were always welcomed in their home. Frances died in 1951 at the age of 94 and was the first to donate to the Delta Home. 9

10 (Continued from page 9) Alpha Province PEG Ethel Bush Lesh was elected President of the first convention in Elwood in The colors were olive green and white, motto Grit Wins, dues of $.15, whistle, yell, toast, poem, secret meaning of the pin were proposed. From there were three chapters Muncie, Elwood, and Tipton. Betsy was the President in She married in 1912 living in Boston, Flint, Michigan, and finally San Jose, California in Olive Spurgeon Gage was Grand President from She stated in The Golden Years of Delta Theta Tau, I m sure our real aim was just to have a good time, although our constitutional aims were very good. Delta Theta Tau has grown into a much bigger thing that we five girls ever dreamed. Charlene and Betsy attended the Golden Anniversary where they were presented their 50 year pins. If the five founders were alive today they would be surprised about $684,275 raised for philanthropy and the 157,655 volunteer hours. And also that from their one chapter there are now 92 chapters across the United States. A favorite hobby of mine is genealogy. Some genealogy facts are: Betsy Gordon (Gibert) was born August 1885 in Kentucky, daughter of Matthew and Frances Gordon. Her father was a druggist and her husband Ralph Gibert was a mechanical engineer with Buick Motors. She lived in Flint, Michigan in the 1940 census. Charlene Prutzman (Rector) was born May 1885 in Indiana. Her father was Thomas and mother was Mertia. She married Cyrus Rector, November 4, He died December 2, 1918 in Delaware County, Indiana. Charlene was a teacher at McKinley Junior High School. Cyrus was a science teacher. Their children were Elizabeth, Phillip, Margaret, and Barbara. She was a Presbyterian. She resided at 1410 Linden, Muncie, Indiana. Olive Spurgeon (Gage) was born August 11, 1885 in Muncie. She dies February 2, 1941 in Evanston, Illinois. Her parents were William and Minerva Spurgeon. Her father was a general physician. Her siblings were Orville, Mary Alice, Kenneth, Chase and Wiley. Her husband was Lloyd Gage and her daughter was Mary. Olive was a housewife in the 1920 census in Silver Bow, Montana. Nora Spurgeon (Charman) was born June 9, 1884 and died April 11, She married Elmer Charman who was an assistant at Muncie Chatel Loan Company. Ethel Bush (Lesh) was born in Pennsylvania in 1988 and died August 11, Her husband Fred was born in Indiana. He was an Auditor at Hemingray Glass Company in Muncie. They had one daughter, Frances. Alpha Province initiated eight new sisters November 2, They were Heddy Scaggs (Theta, Greencastle), Kim Smith (Lambda Epsilon, Plainfield), Breanne Stone (Alpha Omicron, Terre Haute), Patti Fox, Miranda Goodale, Shannon Clark, Jennifer Flater and Sherry Edwards (Alpha Omega, Brazil). I am looking forward to seeing my Delt Sisters in Vancouver this July. Delta Love, Pat Mote, Alpha PEG Alpha Province Convention PROVINCE NEWS The Members of Lambda and Beta Nu Chapters would like to welcome their Alpha sisters to the Alpha Province Convention, October 31 st and November 1-2. Our destination is the Randolph Inn and Suites, Winchester, Indiana for Racing into Randolph County. You will be welcomed at registration in the Randolph Inn and Suites. The Inn, which is locally owned and operated, is at the intersection of Highways 27/32 in Winchester. It features 47 rooms and 12 suites, with a pool, exercise room, and breakfast bar. The Fast Friday Mixer will be held at the Randolph Inn. Saturday we will have the Caution Lap Lunch at the Randolph Grille next to the Inn. After our meetings we will have the Winner Circle Banquet. Our final racing event will be the Finish Line Brunch in the Randolph Inn on Sunday. We will also have great raffle prizes too! If you bring an item for PAWS (Pets are worth saving), you will be given an extra ticket for the raffle. I am planning on doing the two person initiation (because of limited space and I hope we have lots of initiates. Please join your Alpha Sisters for a fun filled RACING weekend. Dinner for Friday evening, you are on your own. After dinner we hope you will attend our A Fishin We Will Go, no host mixer. The chapter with the biggest fish we have bragging rights for the entire week-end.! Saturday we will have a wonderful meal while Island Hopping during our lunch break in our business meeting which will allow us time to socialize with all our Delta Sisters in attendance. Wear your favorite dressy outfit for the Star Spangled Delta Banquet. You will want to bring along any raffle tickets you have purchased during the week end to participate in our terrific raffle. Sail Away breakfast on Sunday will hopefully once again provide you with many wonderful memories of yet another Delta Province Convention. Breakfast will be provided for us by Hilton Stockton.. 13 Delta Rho s own Pat Carlson will lead the business meeting starting at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. But we will definitely want to break for the Pinkalicious luncheon hosted by Zeta Upsilon, Seneca. So PINK will be the flavor of the day! Then the fun continues with Alice in Wonderland (aka Omicron Alpha, Woodlawn) as they take us down the rabbit hole to the Mad Hatter s tea party or in this case, banquet. You will want to bring your own creation because there will be lots of prizes awarded for outstanding millinery design. And you don t want to be without because you never know if the Queen of Hearts will declare off with your head for not obeying her commands. However, that s not all. You will want to go along with Little Red Riding Hood to Grandma s house (raffle) because you never know what will be in her basket. Zeta Theta, Pana, promises that the big bad wolf will not keep them from filling lots of baskets with treats you will want to devour yourself. The Drury Inn is located right off Interstate 64 just east of Fairview Heights, so is easily accessed. They offer their famous Kickback time 5:30-7:00 pm each evening serving hot food and cold beverages. You can start each morning with their free breakfast (for that Very Hungry Caterpillar ) and end each evening with free popcorn and soda. Since our theme is children s books, we are also asking everyone to bring their favorite book to donate to a local shelter, hospital, or other idea we feel deserving and in need. 30 Theta Nu - Albany, IN Theta Nu Chapter celebrated our 65 th anniversary on March 13. We recognized four 50 year members. They were Nova Evans, 63 years; Maribel Conn, 58 years; Bernice Pittenger, 54 years; and Beverly Jeffers, 51 years. They are all still active members. We will be making and selling Cheese Balls before Easter. This is the 4 th year we have done them for Easter. We also make them in November and December each year. This is our main money maker. We have been bringing items to our meetings for the local Food Pantry. We will hold election of officers for in April and they will be installed in May. We will also vote on philanthropy giving in May. We give scholarships to students in the local school system as well as to groups in the community. Norma Yates Gamma Chi - Belleville, IN I know that this sounds repetitious from the start of my previous article for Grit but again I say BBBRRRRRRRRR! Will spring and warm weather ever arrive to the region? Here in the Midwest we may have 70 degrees during the day, followed by a tornado or two and then snow that night. I can only image what our Sisters further north are experiencing. One bright spot on the horizon is our spring flower sale and delivery at the end of April. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and all these past months will be but a bad memory. THINK PRETTY COLORED FLOWERS AND GREEN GRASS! Our group of ladies is glad that Sister, Nancy Klein, is on the road to recovery after a few set backs since the first of the year. We are hoping that she is back to her old self and joining us at meetings, socials and events where we volunteer our services. Bunnies, chicks, ducks and bird nests, OH MY! On March 21 st we were again asked to provide cookies to those attending More Than Just Desserts silent auction and food tasting for The Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois. The Wednesday before the event we gathered at President Joyce Tiemann s home to ice all the cookies that she had baked to prepare for the event. So much chatter was going on around the table that it took no time at all the ice all the cookies. Our town, Belleville, will be celebrating its 200 th birthday during They are having an event a month, which will give us many opportunities to add to our Volunteer hours. The first is the premier of Belleville a movie that was shot and is the story of community, hope and pride. 31 Alpha Omega - Brazil, IN Kim Emmert-O Dell and her team of officers for 2013/2014 have done an outstanding job. At our April meeting we elected new officers for and they were installed at our May meeting. On April 26, we had our Taste Treat Luncheon at the North Clay Middle School. Each Alpha Omega member makes the equivalent of three 9 x13 dishes of a chosen recipe. We limit our ticket sales to 200. Those who come have the chance to have a taste (spoonful) of 20+ different dishes. The cost includes a book with the recipes for the dishes they are sampling. throughout the year. Lately, these include scholarships, We Wish You Well Program at Northview High School, sponsorship of a representative to Hoosier Girls State, Rachel Jones Benefit, Amanda Overshiner Benefit, Hunter Harrison Scholarship Fund, Kids Kothes Kloset, Community Theater, a Mission Trip, YMCA s Strong Kids Campaign, Clay County Parent Bereavement Support Group, and Habitat for Humanity. We also regularly assist the Clay County Emergency Food Pantry, House of Hope, LEAAP Center, Clay County Humane Society, St. Vincent Clay Hospital ER, and the Serving on the Streets (SOS) ministry. Diane Braden Kappa Xi - Brookville, OH Shown in the photo making plans for the luncheon are Bonnie Boor, Tammy Ninesling, Melissa McCullough, Cindy McKinney, Jennifer Jones, Linda Sheese, and Diane Braden. On May 6, the trucks from the supplier brought in hanging baskets and pots of flowers to the pavilion at our local park. After much sorting and counting, the flowers were ready for Alpha Omega members to pick up and deliver throughout the county and surrounding area. This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year and we re always glad when the last basket or pot is delivered. Our profits help fund worthwhile community agencies and projects Wow Delta Sisters! Our Officers have had an amazing year with many, many accomplishments and guiding us onward to the goal of philanthropy, in the name of Delta Theta Tau! It seems that all of our planned projects were completed and done in true Sisterhood, but with lots of fun also. We find if that smile is not given and a kind word shared things just don't finish with a good feeling..and a productive outcome. We will soon hold elections for the slate of new officers and our girls are very good at stepping up to the plate and taking their turn at whatever is asked of them. We congratulate our Past President Tina Cassel for an amazing job of guiding us through this past year and term. Our wonderful production of 'Delta Showboat "HEE HAW" Gloom, Despair and Agony' was an absolutely hilarious event. It was great fun to pull some of the most wonderful and lively songs and type acts from that old television production..of course done our way! All the folks in attendance were tapping their toes, 31

32 singing along and laughing from the shows beginning to end. It was not only fun for them to see, it was great fun for all the cast/chorus, band and special acts to put on. April 25th and 26th was pretty memorable for everyone that had anything to do with the show. All our proceed profit will go into Kappa Xi's 'Philanthropy Fund', to do more good things for our Brookville community. We Delta Sisters of Kappa Xi hope that all of our sisters, throughout the United States, will have safe and exciting summer and we hope to see a lot of you at National Convention in July! Delta Love, Vicki Mills Beta Sigma - Clinton, IN As we look forward to warmer weather we also look forward to initiating more members into our chapter. We sent several invitations and voted on prospective candidates in March. We hosted a meet and greet event to introduce ourselves and answer questions about our chapter. Our Philanthropy committee has been working on selecting the winner of the Peg Helms Scholarship which is a yearly award given to an outstanding High school senior. Two of our members helped to select the participants in Girls State since we co-sponsor that award with other local organizations. We decided to take prepaid orders for our Italian Cream Cakes for the Easter holiday. This did not do as well as we had hoped-we sold only seven cakes. A growing concern among members has been the counting of volunteer hours-what is allowed and what is not. A guideline of acceptable and non-acceptable hours was given to each member so that the confusion could be resolved. A local shirt designer has submitted a design for a shirt featuring the Delta logo. Members can provide their own shirt and she will embellish it with our Greek letters. We plan to wear these at any function we sponsor. Our slate of officers was presented at the March meeting and was unanimously accepted. We have a good group of women who will lead us with integrity and wisdom in the coming months. We look forward to working together to achieve our goals-more philanthropy and more volunteering. Brenda Dannemiller Beta Omega - Denver, CO Beta Omega sisters are deeply saddened with the loss of member Joy Crocheron 's daughter, Michelle, who has been battling cancer in Texas. 33 that long time member and great convention goer, Louise Eshelman, is going through chemo treatments for lymphoma and our thoughts and prayers are with Louise- - -we love you Louise!! Now for some good news... Beta Omega is getting excited about convention in the Northwest... sooooooo excited that our current President has volunteered to serve a second term to get to go Vancouver as delegate for she has family there. YEA. Plus it will be her first National Convention and she is serving her first term as ZETA Province Chairman. Some definite "firsts" for Nancy in alot of ways. You Rock, Nancy!! We do installation of officers the end of May and look forward to our new beginning. Won't be long til it's time for our HUGE outdoor Craft Fair where we have been a food vendor for over 25 years the first weekend in October. This has become our largest moneymaker and Beta Omega got the idea from a workshop at a National Convention -- Tacos in a Bag. Thanks sisters! We love you all and hope to see many many Delts in Vancouver!!! Virginia Sweeney Zeta Chi - Dunkirk, IN The sun is shining today and it is beautiful. I hope all my sisters are well and having a wonderful day. During the spring we celebrated our anniversary with a catered dinner at Miller s Merry Manor. After dinner an auction was held with donated items all weighing a pound. It was a good time for active members and alums. Another fun activity for us is the annual community Easter Egg Hunt. it is such a joy to see the children racing around for candy and prizes. In May we presented the Wanda D. Miskinis scholarship to two Jay County High School seniors. Jenna Ferguson and Gabrielle Minnich were the recipients this year. We wish them great success during their college experience. June begins the city Concerts in the Park. These are free concerts open to all and running from June through August. Various organizations take turns manning the concessions and our turn is in early June. Good food, good music, come and join us. Congratulations to our officers for the outstanding job they did this year and we look forward to their continued success through next year. Our projects went well this past year and we were able to give more money toward our scholarships and community projects. Beverly Austin Eta Mu - Goshen, IN Spring is finally coming to Indiana! It feels like it has been a long time coming this year. We have had a few fund raisers in the works. One of them is selling coupon books at Carson's Department Store. It is for a few hours on a Saturday 33

34 morning and we raise some funds for help with our charities that we work for. We also had a Cinderella's closet that we sell prom and formal dress's for $10. It was run by Brandi DeVoe and Sharon Miller this year. It is always so fun to see the girls try on the gowns. We are getting ready to prepare our Veterans Memorial at our County Court House for the summer. We plant and keep the flowers watered for our Veterans in Elkhart County. Looking forward to a rewarding spring and summer. Sister Love - Kathy Coffman Nu Tau - Greenwood, IN Nu Tau would like to congratulate Dr. Tom Keely, Assistant Superintendent, of Beech Grove Schools. Dr. Keely was named Central Indiana IASBO School Business Manager of the Year. Dr. Keely has been instrumental in helping our chapter establish our craft fair roots at Beech Grove High School. His wife, Missy, has been a member of our chapter for the past 10 years. Nu Tau is gearing up for a busy summer. Several of our members will be participating in walks to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Our own sister, Shirley Green, walked in the Race for the Cure on April 12, This makes her 14th year walking to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. Summer will also find our sisters scanning yard sales for gently used baby clothes to donate to Better Indy Babies (BIBS). We allocate funds to use at garage sales and our dollars go far when it comes to buying great things to help stock the baby pantry. You can imagine how thrilled new mothers are to receive a handmade baby quilt for their newborn child. Tami Hermesch Omicron Omicron - Lodi, CA Omicron Omicron Lodi Chapter held their annual Women Who Did in History luncheon fundraiser on March 1st. Our proceeds benefited the Lodi House and Executive Director, Susanne Magnum, shared the exciting news of moving the women and children s shelter to a larger facility in Lodi. The event was well attended, in fact, we doubled our attendance this year! We all enjoyed getting together and discussing the women we would portray; deciding who would 34

35 present and handle each task. It s truly a group effort! Our delta sisters did a fabulous job of portraying four women from the San Joaquin area that made a difference in the lives of others. Thank you Peggy Moos, Marilyn Cook, Georgie Reed, and Karen Kuykendall! As summer approaches, we are making plans and preparations for our next fundraiser in September. We ll be making Cabernet Wine Jelly, jewelry, and much more to sell at the various local harvest fairs. Iota Mu - Lynn, IN Our chapter has had our semi-annual Chicken Dinner, and we have already put the new members to work. At our next meeting, we will be making baby blankets. This sounds like fun, but for some of us, it may be a challenge. Rita Davis, an active member in our chapter, loss both of her in-laws within a 5 week period. Two of our other members have lost husbands this winter. Please see the Memorials. All our prayers go out to these members. At least it s April and hopefully spring will come soon. We are now making plans for our April 24 th Vera Bradley/Longaberger Bingo. We hold this at our Elks Club. Hope it s quit snowing by then! Kay Webb Lambda Theta - Martinsville, IN What a busy and COLD winter this has been! The members of Lambda Theta Chapter have been busy supporting local youths by donating to the Martinsville High School Decathlon team for their upcoming national championship trip to Hawaii, the MHS DECA team at the State competition and to sponsor an Artesian Little League baseball team. In addition three sisters also participated in the annual BBJ YMCA Sweata-Thon to support the Morgan County Invest in Youth campaign. Sue Roe headed up the big job of supplying the school closets with clothing items and the middle and high schools with gift cards. Sisters have been donating cookies to the monthly blood drive, food to the local shelters and sending care packages to soldiers. We are looking forward to our birthday dinner and get acquainted party for potential new members. We anticipate initiating four new members in June! We are also beginning to prepare for the annual taco stand at the Morgan County Fair. Rachel Crabb-Publicity Officer Lambda Nu - Mooresville, IN A cold snowy winter challenged some of our activities at Lambda Nu particularly during the month of December. Our annual Christmas Dinner and silent auction was canceled as the first blast of icy snowy weather moved into our area. Fortunately, Santa was not hampered by the snow and ice. He and his helpers visited Damar and local preschools spreading his Christmas cheer. Students from the preschool also traveled to the movie Frozen with a little assistance from the chapter. 35

36 The chapter was able to sponsor three families for Christmas. Thanks to generous contributions by our sisters, some thrifty bargain shoppers, and donations by some or our local vendors, Christmas wishes were realized for all three families. There was even enough to add a few surprises for our families. Our primary fundraiser Crafty Bear Fare had a location change this year due to construction at normal location. The committees are scrambling to make our Crafty Bear Fare successful at our new location. The money earned from the Fare will generate scholarships for our local students. Our scholarship committee is currently meeting to choose our scholarship recipients for All sisters continue their work stuffing bears, assisting with the community blood drive, and compiling volunteer hours with their own personal talents and contributions. Lambda Nu is fortunate to have an outstanding slate of officers who are leading us to become the best women that we can be and make the world better one project at a time. We look forward to working together on our upcoming philanthropy and volunteering opportunities under their leadership. Lisa Weiss Kappa Rho - New Carlisle, IN It has been a very very long winter here in New Carlisle, IN!! We braved the winter weather to bake pumpkin and chocolate rolls for our holiday fund raiser, that has proved to be both fun (although a bit messy) and profitable! Our hat and glove collection for local area schools was much needed and appreciated this harsh winter. We are so looking forward to our spring projects of Adopt a Highway clean up, and spring fund raising garage sale. Work on our biggest fund raiser an annual golf outing held in June, is well under way also! Speaking of fund raising, we are very proud of our sister Vicky Cencelewski who was awarded $1, donation from her employer Tech Data, for philanthropic work done in our community. Of course Vicky was very humbling stating she would not be able to accomplish those things without her sisters of Kappa Rho. Way to go Vicky! The generous donation will go far in helping our local philanthropic endeavors. Delta Love, Sisters of Kappa Rho Xi Theta - New Lebanon, OH We have continued to put foods in backpacks for students of New Lebanon Middle Schools who qualify for this program. The backpacks go home with the students for the weekend. This is done each Thursday throughout the school year. Two sorority members were involved in the selection of two seniors to receive scholarships we are awarding this year. Interviews of seniors applying for scholarships offered by community groups is scheduled, and each provider is present to select their choice. As a money-maker, we set two dates to eat at Bob Evans Restaurant in Eaton. Coupons are given to family and friends for the specific dates and the chapter receives a percentage of those presenting the coupon. It is great to eat out and receive some reimbursement. We just completed our biggest yearly project a Spring Luncheon. This was our 28 th year for having this event. The program consisted of a demonstration of how to wear scarfs, luncheon, performance of a women s barbership chorus, and an auction of items made/donated by sorority members. Homemade baked goods were for sale also. Proceeds went to help a local 4 year old girl with an inoperable brain tumor with 36

37 medical expenses, and help provide foods for the kids backpack program. The chapter is busy making plans to host the Gamma Province Convention to be held October 3 5, 2014 in Walnut Creek, Ohio. The theme is Weekend of Irving Berlin at Walnut Creek. As we are selecting foods and talking about programs, we get hungry and want to burst into singing. We hope you can there and share our excitement! Kathy Tipton Eta Lambda - Noblesville, IN After a long cold snowy winter it is beginning to look like Spring is finally here. Our chapter recently elected our officers for the year with installation being held in May. They are as follows: Merry Penn - President, Candy Perry - Vice-President, Marleen Ice - Treasurer, Sheila Kota - Corresponding Secretary, Nathalia Bedrava - Recording Secretary, Debbie Feliciana - Historian, Sherry White - Sargent of Arms. Our main money making projects for the upcoming year are: Parking cars at a craft fair held at Potter s Bridge in Noblesville, cooking and serving meals for the Lions Club in Westfield and working in the concession stands during the summer Symphony on the Prairie concerts held at Conner Prairie in Noblesville. We are all looking forward to the warmer weather as a new year begins for our Chapter. Eta Beta - Odon, IN We just finished our project of selling concessions at the Elementary girls' and boys' basketball games but there is no time to rest on our laurels. We are getting ready to begin our geranium sales and have an Anniversary party. This party is celebrated yearly and will be our 73rd. There is always our monthly bingo game at the Nursing Home as well. Graduation time is around the corner and scholarship applications are to be read. We never seem to lack for things to do. We look forward to convention time when we can meet up with old Delt friends and make new ones. Sue Dart Nu Alpha - Oxford, OH We are very proud of all of the Nu Alpha members and officers. They have all worked very hard this year. All of their efforts have provided many resources to the community. Deb Smith has been a wonderful President for the past two years. We are very thankful for her and everything she has contributed to Nu Alpha. We continue to dedicate our time to the Choice Pantry, Family Resource Center, Mary Magdalene House, Pet Pantry, Military Support for Servicemen/women and the Women s Care Center. We also volunteer at the local hospital, area schools, nursing homes, Oxford Senior citizens Center, The Apple Butter Festival, and the Hueston Woods Arts and Crafts Show, so our we are quite busy. We are looking forward to National Convention being held this July 9 13 at the beautiful Heathman Lodge, located in Vancouver, Washington. We hope to see many of you there. Then in the fall Gamma Province will meet in Amish country at the Carlisle Inn, located in Sugar Creek, Ohio from October 3 5. 38 Lambda Sigma - Phoenix, AZ We are so pleased to inform that an MAL has returned to our group! Marylou Drew welcome back! It is so wonderful to see your smiling face again! We would like to extend our deepest sympathies in the loss of Gennie Resler s sister, who passed away in March, however, she did live a long happy life and was happy to be in her home on her beautiful ranch at the time of her passing. We want to forward out a thank you to Lambda Sigma for their support to the Wells Fargo account set up for Skip, the husband of MJ Litz, and would like to ask for everyone s prayers that the medical professionals will have the knowledge to be able to provide Skip with the treatment he seeks and also for a speedy recovery. Regarding Philanthropy, Lambda Sigma provided a check at Christmas for $1000 to the Jewish Family Services which provides services for teenage foster children. The money we donated went to gift certificates for the children. We are so proud to have been able to help this year. We want to see you at National Convention this year in July! We are so excited to be the hostess chapter in Vancouver, Washington. There are great times to be had by all!! Lambda Sigma will meet you at the registration table! Zeta Zeta - Plymouth, IN We are looking forward to warmer weather after this extremely cold winter; as I am sure many others are! In March, we hosted another successful Trivia Night. We were fortunate enough to host 13 tables this year. In April, we held our 2 nd Annual Fifty Shades of Grapes & Hops wine and craft beer tasting event where we teamed up with City Center; another local business downtown. This is a fun, relaxing afternoon with wine and beer tasting and great appetizers. Also in April was our Card-o-Rama Payoff Party. We have this each April to host the individuals from the community that play different card games throughout the year! During our summer months, we will be busy organizing the concession stands at the park s amphitheatre hosted by Encore Performing Arts. We will also be continuing our Bears and Blankets project with the hospital. This year we are also taking on a new project with one of the golf courses in Plymouth. It will be a Delts Day where anyone from the community can golf and a percentage of the proceeds for each round played will benefit our organization. We are looking forward to bringing on another new project! We would like to thank Sallie Crawford for all of her hard work and dedication to our chapter as the President. Along with being President, Sallie has previously held the offices of Recording Secretary and Vice President. Sallie has also chaired Card-o-Rama for several years and served on many of our other committees. Thanks again to Sallie! We wish everyone a safe and happy summer! We are looking forward to another productive year and good fellowship Sharon Hammers Theta Lambda - Roachdale, IN This spring, Theta Lambda Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority celebrated two milestones: our chapter s 65 th birthday and 64 years of service by our sister, Barbara Brookshire. We celebrated at the Putnam Inn in Greencastle, Indiana, with members and their spouses. The Theta Lambda Chapter began in Roachdale on March 1, Barbara Brookshire joined the sorority on May 16, Barbara turned 94 in February and is still currently an active member! At our celebration, Pat Smith chronicled some of the highlights of Barbara s service to our organization. Picture boards and scrapbooks also were enjoyed by all as we took some steps back into time! Barbara has held each office of the sorority throughout the years. She was our very capable Pontifix Prima for many years and could recite her lines from memory. She made each initiation very special. Barbara has helped with each of our projects, many times as chairman. Our Santa Letters project was in Barbara s hands. She wrote every Santa Letter to personally reflect each of the recipients! There was no form letter! Christmas of 2012 was our last year for the Santa Letters and Barbara continued with wonderful letters to many children and adults! She took pride in each letter that she composed and thoroughly enjoyed her work! Pat mentioned an interesting fact in her discussion about Barbara. In 1956, Barbara and Betty Wilson traveled to Province Convention in Indianapolis by catching a bus in Bainbridge. The total cost for their bus ticket and their lunch at Province was $2.75 apiece! Times have certainly changed! Barbara herself helped recall that in 1954 she and the Theta Lambda sisters mailed out 64,000 catalogs for Wilson Brothers Greenhouse in Raccoon as a money-making project! We had several ties to Wilson Brothers Greenhouse and we are sad that the business has not been in service for many years. With all of the time and energy that Barbara has spent on Delts, you would think that was her only activity for the past 64 years! However, that was not the case at all! Barbara was not only busy in Delts, but she was active in other interests, such 39

40 as raising her children, Home Ec Club, Farm Bureau, 4-H (including lots of judging), church work, and feeding her baby calves at home on the farm! Coming from the big city of Chicago, Barbara certainly adjusted well to living on a farm near Roachdale, Indiana! We congratulate Barbara on 64 years of non-stop passion for the great cause of philanthropy! We are very blessed to have Barbara as our sister and to have shared many wonderful memories in the name of Delta Theta Tau! May the building of special memories continue! Happy Summer! Cheryl Marshall Epsilon Rho - San Jose, CA Members of Epsilon Rho Chapter helped to sort pajamas for the "Pajama Project" and we were amazed at the number of pajamas that had been donated. There must have been over a thousand pair. These pajamas are sorted by size and then, request from local area shelters are filled and the pajamas are delivered to the shelters. This was a very rewarding experience for those members who were able to participate. Our Fantasy Tea is continuing to bring in donations to the chapter. This is our main fundraiser for the year and is a simple way to build up our chapter funds. This year in April, we held a social event at a historical house in the community. Members and guest were served tea in the Carriage House and then given a tour of the home. This was a very enjoyable event and the house was lovely. We are still busy with volunteer hours and continue to look for ways to help others our community. All the members of Epsilon Rho wish all the sisters of Delta Theta Tau a wonderful summer. Robbie McGagin Zeta Upsilon - Seneca, IL After a very long, cold winter, spring came and was welcomed with open arms. Everyone has warmed up and summer brought heat, sunshine, and projects to work on. Our five high school scholarship winners filled out their applications and the finalists were interviewed by our Scholarship committee. All of the students indicated a fine educational background, good interviewing skills, and wonderful prospects for using these skills in future colleges and careers. They were invited to the chapter summer picnic and told its of their plans for the future. We enjoyed meeting them and talking with them. The lower grades in Seneca Grade School had fun on Bunny Fun Day. The Easter Bunny was there to sing songs and play games with them. The finishing touch was candy treats for everyone. Thanks to a believable bunny with a great 'costume' and the DTT members who prepared the treats a few days before the event. The annual local Delta Theta Tau flower sale held before Mothers Day was very successful. Good customers and beautiful floral selections made the perfect combination for a good day of sales and fun. Cool temperatures early in the morning while we were setting everything on display led to milder temperatures by mid morning. Many Mothers (and others) enjoyed these flowers. 40

41 As the summer moved on, we set up and worked time slots over three days of our Summerfest celebration food booth. Walking tacos, hot dogs, chips, and drinks sold very well and members also had an opportunity to enjoy other activities of this mid-summer festival. Everyone updated their philanthropy hours and turned them in. Cheri Hovious was initiated into the chapter in April. We welcome her and her enthusiastic outlook. Three new officers were initiated in May: President, Sue Thorpe; Corresponding Secretary, Lydelle Bentz; and Treasurer, Diane Leighner. The other officers are in place. Looking forward to National Convention at Heathrow Lodge! Delta Love, Wilma Oswald Mu Lambda - Stockton, CA Mu Lambda Chapter is working on preparing goody bags for Mother s Day for clients of the local Women s Center clients. These women have bravely left abusive home situations. This will be our 2 nd year doing goody bags and we know the women enjoyed the items we chose last year. We are looking forward to assembling them in May for delivery just before Mother s Day. Many members of Mu Lambda are volunteering at Bugfest 2014 to be held at the local Oak Grove Nature Center. Sister Jenny Wade is spearheading our volunteer efforts at this event. We are going to help children with insect safaris, cockroach races and other creepy-crawly events. Jenny is a docent at the Nature Center and promises us we won t have to touch any bugs. Sister Susan Machado has been busy designing beautiful centerpieces and we can t wait to share them with you at Delta Province Convention in Stockton, CA on November 7-9, 2014! We plan on having some fabulous raffle baskets, great food and friendship at Delta Province Convention while Rollin On The River. Melody Ruiz Lambda Alpha - Tacoma, WA Greetings Sisters, I wanted to share with you an idea about a great fundraiser we had this March. It was simple but fun. We had a white elephant not the kind where you just get rid of your junk, but nice items that maybe you don t use any more, or have changed décor, or maybe is just not your style. Each member brought 3 wrapped gifts and then each gift was auctioned off to the highest bidder. Just from cleaning out our closets, house, and maybe supplementing with inexpensive gifts, our chapter exceeded $300. An easy, easy project. (See photo) We celebrated the March birthdays at the Washington Soldiers Home and have a few pictures to share. It is such an uplifting project and it is so appreciated by the residents. We wheel them to a great little café on the campus food is great and always homecooked. On average we have 3 to 4 birthdays a month. The home pays for the meals, but our sorority organizes provides arrangements, table decorations, homemade 41

42 cards, and getting our residents to and from. We always have a wonderful time getting to know these men and women who have given so much for our country. It is truly a blessing for those of us who volunteer. (See photo on previous page). Another project we are working for the Home is a type of music therapy: We are in the process of soliciting donations of new/used IPOD 2G Shuffles, download them with different music categories such as country, classical, easy listening, jazz, etc. and make them available to the residents of the nursing facility. One of the goals will be to solicit enough donations to provide for every resident in the facility not just the nursing center. We already have 6 IPODS downloaded and ready to go. This particular therapy has been successful in bringing many Alzheimer/dementia patients back to life. Carol O Brien Lambda - Union City, IN Our February meeting was a social with invited guests. We enjoyed refreshments and saw a movie. This is an annual event. At our March meeting, Linda DeHaven, Delt MAL, gave a presentation on Journey Home, for veterans. We donated $100 for this cause. Another $100 was donated to a local family who lost their home in a fire. For other philanthropy, several of our members worked for the PAWS fundraiser at the Pizza Hut. We support PAWS with donations of dog food,toys,bones,and cleaning supplies. Recently, several sisters volunteered their time at the Reality Store for the eighth graders of Union City Jr. High School. The eighth graders are given a job, salary, family and they must go around to various booths such as groceries, furniture, insurance, childcare, medical etc. They have a checkbook register which they must fill out. Sometimes they have to get a second job. It is a real eye opener for these students. Kathy Moore, MAL, is in charge of this program. Lambda chapter is also working with Beta Nu on the Alpha Province Convention this October 31st- November 2nd at the Randolph Inn and Suites, in Winchester. Pat Mote Beta Zeta - Warsaw, IN After a brutal winter in Indiana, Beta Zeta is getting into the mood for spring and summer with our Geranium sales. We deliver them in time to give as gifts for mothers on mothers day. We are in the process of selecting our scholarship recipient. It will go to a student who is pursuing an education in the health field. We will be serving a meal to the Baker Youth Club this month. We serve about 50 to 60 children. New officers will be chosen at our May meeting. We would like to thank those who served as officers this past year. They did a wonderful job. Our pas president Brenda Arnold and our new president Jean Whitenack will be attending the National Convention in Portland, Oregon in July. 43 Gamma Upsilon - W. Frankfort, IL Members for Gamma Upsilon Chapter have had a very busy beginning to this year. Plans have been in to works for a Trivia Night which we just had. Trivia Night is one of our big money making functions of the year. We combined selling some raffle tickets for different items to go along with the Trivia this year. We started selling tickets for the raffle back at the beginning of our year. The drawing for each of these items was held at Trivia. The American Doll, bed and clothing went to John and Stephanie Odle, JoAnn Marks won the $ Restaurant card, and our own member, Brenda Volanski won the dinner for 8. The Trivia table that won the big prize was a table of men; Darrell Meler, Jim Toms, Steve Cook, Mark McDaniel, Gary Sloan, Lem Karns, Bob Gerth and Clint Hawkins. A $20.00 cash gift was given to each of the 8 participants. The girls worked hard, along with the committee and we had a very successful evening. The committee has to be given a lot of thanks for such a good job. Members celebrated on Oct. 25 with a party held at Bella s Restaurant. The committee chose a Halloween theme for the evening. The Committee went all out with decorations and costumes. Others were invited to wear costumes if they desired. Many good costumes showed up. Prizes were given for the person who guesses the closest number of candy corns in a jar and Marilyn Simpson was the winner. Throughout the evening 3 more games were played with Brenda Weaver, Janie Wangler and Debby Bussler winning those. So with good costumes, games, prizes and good food, a wonderful time was had by all. A fun night is always enjoyed. Members will be selling tickets for Williamson County CASA during November and December. Then we are ready to rest a bit over the Holidays and will be ready to start in again after the first of the year with whatever else comes around then. Nancy Wade Beta Nu - Winchester, IN We had a cold and snowy winter here in Indiana. That impacted some of our business meetings and socials. However, we do feel we accomplished a lot for a small chapter. Our annual Salad Supper and Holiday Auction did very well this year. Many great items went up for bid and of course wonderful food. The winter Nut Sale was a great success too. We all complained that we ate about as many as we sold. We lost some members due to illness and changes in residence. We also sympathized with those members who experienced deaths and illnesses in their family. We truly believe that summer will bring great things to Beta Nu. Together with Lambda Chapter of Union City, IN, we will be hosting Alpha Province Convention here in Winchester on Oct. 31, Nov. 1 & 2. Because of our famous track, Winchester Speedway Fastest ½ mile highbanked track in the World, racing will be our theme. We re not sure how many cute race drivers will attend, but we can promise a great convention with lots of fun. We hope to see you there. Phyllis Boldrey Alumnae Association News Epsilon Psi-Beta Our President, Donna Parker, has been having health problems for several months but I am happy to report that she is making progress and is back to work part time. We have been getting along in her absence with the efficient help of our Vice President, Joan Dant. We have again furnished toothbrushes to the local school nurses who will give them out as needed. The supply should last them two years. 47 In Memoriam Alpha Omega - Brazil, IN Everett Lee Burkhart passed away on February 12, His wife, Betty, was a member of the now disbanded Alpha Omega Beta Alumnae Chapter. Jim Boor passed away on April 7, MAL member Yvonne Boor is his wife. Active chapter member relatives are sister-in law Bonnie Boor and niece Tammy Ninesling. Alpha Omega extends our deepest sympathies to these families. Diane Braden Iota Mu - Lynn, IN We are sad to have lost another Delta Pa. Louis Bud Robbins was the loving husband of active member Rita Robbins. They were married almost 71 years. Bud was the father of Sue Comer and grandfather of Lindsay Bruns also active members of Iota Mu. He also left behind 5 other grandchildren, and 13 great grandkids. Bud was in the US Navy during World War II. He ran a Dental Lab in Lynn, IN for 65 years before retiring. After retiring he enjoyed watching the Colts and Auto Racing. Top on his list were his grandchildren; spending as much time as possible with them. MAL member Ruth Ann White has also lost her husband of 57 years; Joe White JR. Xi Theta - New Lebanon, OH Judy Bixler was initiated into DeltaTheta Tau on October 6, Judy passed away February 20, 2014 at the age of 72. She held many positions in the chapter, and could be seen at many conventions. Judy retired from teaching at New Lebanon Elementary School for more than 30 years She loved her family, and her home was always open to them as well as the sorority. Her daughter, Beth and granddaughter, Samantha are also members of the chapter. We held her in high esteem and will miss her. Kathy Tipton Eta Lambda - Noblesville, IN Michael Davis, son of Rosalind Davis and brother of Debbie Bastin passed away in a job related accident. Rosalind and Debbie are in our MAL chapter. Pamela Thomas Gamma Upsilon - W. Frankfort, IL It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I have to tell you of the death of one of our lovely members, Mona McDaniel. Mona passes away on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 11:35 a.m. at her home surrounded by her family. She was born July 20, 1928 in West Frankfort, IL. She was married to Howard and they had three children, 47

48 Tammy, Amy and Randy. Howard preceded her in death. Mona was a devoted Sorority member and was a member of Gamma Upsilon for 44 years. She served our chapter in any way that anyone asked her to, including many offices. She was our chapter Treasurer for 18 years. She was always active in all fund raiser or any other functions that the chapter took on. She always looked forward to going to conventions us, was very observant and was able to help keep everyone on their toes when it came to issues that sometimes come up. Other than sorority, Mona was always doing things with her family, like ballgames, camping and any other activities that they wanted to do. She also loved her Church, Second Baptist, and was very active in functions of her church. She loved the members of church and doing things with them. Then, of course, there was basketball, another love of Mona s. She loved the local Red Birds and the St. Louis Cardinals. She seldom missed a local ball game and attended Cardinals games when she could. The local schools honored Mona in 2012 by asking her to be Parade Marshall at the local Homecoming Parade for all her years of dedication to the teams. Mona will be missed for a time to come by all of our members. Nancy Wade Epsilon Eta-Beta Epsilon Eta Beta Alumni Chapter lost a dear sister who was active until her death March 5, Alma Denney was 98 years young and a wonderful mentor to all of us. She was a graduate of Center High School and Indiana Business College. She had been Assistant Vice President and secretary to the presidents of Industrial Trust and Savings Bank now Chase Bank. She was a former member of Muncie Business and Professional Women's Club, Soroptimist International, National Association of Bank Women, Society of Indiana Pioneers, Paul Revere Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and The National Society of Colonial Dames XVII.
