FEZ SEZ Al Azhar Shriners, Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T3L1S4 Phone: Fax: Website: Dear Nobles and Ladies, FROM YOUR POTENTATE Hard to believe it is almost the end of November. Wow, time flies when you are having fun with a purpose. We had a successful Joint Ceremonial with Al Azhar. Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt (Deputy Imperial Potentate) and his Lady Lisa enjoyed themselves and left with good memories of their first visit to Alberta. I would be remiss if I did not welcome Nobles David Banfield, Orrin Bliss, Allan Dickson, Jared Deschner, Heath Foster, Sheldon Sephton, Thomas Sorbie, Joe Tedford and Gareth Thomas into our fold. My advice to our new Nobles is get involved in a Club or Unit to enhance your Shrine experience. Al Azhar Nobles, Ladies and friends were everywhere to be seen at the SHC Open in Las Vegas. We had the largest contingent and I thank everyone for taking the time and expense of being there. Thanks also to Ill Sir Gordon Brewer and Noble Richard Sigurdson for your efforts in promoting this event in Southern Alberta. There was a good turn-out at the Halloween Howl and people seemed to enjoy themselves. I know myself and Lady Victoria had a great time. Members of Al Azhar, other fraternal bodies and their friends and family remembered those who paid the ultimate price protecting our freedom at our Remembrance Day ceremony. Thanks to Noble Omar Giroux for pulling it together and thanks to the Legion of Honour, Provost Corps and Shrine Patrol for assisting. By the time this is published, we will have held our Joint Installation and the Vintage Car Club Installation. Congratulations to the Officers of the six Units and two Clubs who were installed. Have a great Shrine year. Donations continue to roll in to SHC Canada and our Patient Transportation Fund. The kids thank you. Some Clubs/Units are making donations to youth oriented organizations in their area. These donations provide great PR for Shriners throughout Southern Alberta. Chief Rabban, Noble Bob Newman, will be outlining his plans for Please have your Club/Unit represented. Our Stated Business Meeting is coming up on November 27. I encourage Nobles to come and fill the room. Much of the meeting will be spent on providing you with information regarding an exciting Strategic Opportunity for Al Azhar. This opportunity is world class and could benefit Al Azhar financially for decades to come. I would have my tongue torn out if I revealed anymore. Nobles, it is still not too late for us to get new Nobles and cold sand them. Get completed applications and the necessary fees into our Recorder. Victoria joins me in wishing you and yours a wonderful, joyous Christmas, Hanukah or Milad un Nabi and a Happy New Year. 3 CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Well we all made it back from The Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas from October 13 to 19. Ill Sir Gordon Brewer did an awesome job recruiting our Nobles and Ladies to attend this huge PGA tournament. As the Imperial Sir said, it is not a fundraising function but rather an awareness event raising the profile of our chosen philanthropy. The donations arrive from the public following the event. It takes over a 1,000 volunteers to run it with about 25% being Shriners and Ladies. Of that number Al Azhar had over 65 Nobles & Ladies which were 25% of the Shrine volunteers. We were #1! That became particularly important at the Shriner s Volunteer Appreciation dinner. Ill Sir Fast Eddie (Past Potentate Ed Jakubowsky) handed out Al Azhar hats to some of the guests from not only our Shrine Centre but other Centres as well. It was very visible as to who we were. One of the Imperial Line did not have his fez and though he was from South Carolina, it looked like we was our member on the line by wearing one of the ball caps. The Imperial Sir recognized the importance of our contribution and chastised the Texas Shriners for not having more members present than we did. In fact, I defy anyone to find one of the 18 holes where there wasn t an Al Azhar presence! The weather was awesome in Las Vegas with temperatures in the mid 80 s. When you volunteer, there is ample time when you are not on the course to partake of the extracurricular activities the city has to offer. Not only did I dine in some of the world class restaurants but I was able to attend about 6 shows including one of the very last Shania Twain concerts before she ends her run at Caesar s Palace. I would highly recommend putting this on your bucket list for 2015 and let s see an even greater Al Azhar presence and again show the Texans and the other Shrine Centres who we are. In the Light of Grace. Noble R. Dean Cowan Chaplain 2014 Page 3
MEXICO SHRINERS Greetings at Ceremonial in Mexico City Hospital 23 new Shriners were made with greetings from the Imperial Sir and Al Azhar. Congratulations to the degree team on Saturday the 25th of October TEAM AL AZHAR SHRINE Thanks to all the Nobles, Ladies and friends for your support of the Las Vegas Shriners Hospital for Children Open Fed Ex Cup. What a great time! Tino Devalter Remembered Have had good reports from all the volunteers and Chairperson s that we never missed our shifts and were willing to fill in other positions when necessary. We could have the first three holes to Marshall in 2015 so ask around so we can be even better than 2014 for volunteers (65+) Thank you Ill Sir Charlie Duffin for hosting a fun evening at your abode in Vegas. Thank you Joni Schmitke for being the Hostess at the hospitality room at Sun Coast Please mark your calendars for our next meeting Friday April Ill Sir Gordon Brewer P.P. Team Captain Page 4 In September, the memory of Tino Devalter was honoured for his contribution to the Shrine by the Medicine Hat Shrine Club. The Club presented a plaque with his Shrine contributions to his widow, Margaret, at their Volunteers Appreciation Night.
RECORDER S RAMBLINGS Nobles & Ladies, it is that time of year again when we are having installations and Club & Unit Christmas parties (Notice we are not having holiday or seasonal parties!) Please try and get to some of these, especially your own installations and parties as your new officers really do appreciate your support. Potentate Brian and Lady Victoria, Chief Rabban Bob and Lady Dianne and myself were at a concert in Inglewood on November 8. This was put on by Nancy Laberge, who is a local girl who wrote the Holy Moly Christmas song and has directed that all monies made from this song go to our Shriner s hospitals. Grant Armstrong Edward Pipella Allan Walker Bassano Calgary Vulcan I have sent along to you an with the song on it and the information that she was looked after by the Shriners in her early years with an operation that she feels saved her life. We were given an opportunity to go up on stage and be recognized and Brian said a few words to the audience about the Shrine and our hospitals. I have requested that Nancy bring some CD s out to the Shrine Centre which has the Holy Moly Christmas song on it for sale to our members. They are $15.00, and we receive a dollar from each sale. Many people now download songs from the internet, and each time this happens with the Christmas song, we derive the revenue from this as well. I bought one at the concert and liked all the songs on it, which are original songs written by Nancy and friends. Nancy is presently on a short tour of our hospitals, visiting first Montreal, then Chicago, Sacramento and Los Angeles. The intent is to visit all hospitals by the end of next year. She is a delightful lady, and we wish her success with her touring and career This is our last issue before Christmas, so I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2015, and thank you all for being Shriners and Shriner s ladies! Garth Border Your Recorder Name LOST IN THE DESERT If you have a current address or phone number for any of the following please contact the Recorder s office Johansen, Peter Konczak, Walter Owen, John G. Shapka, Steve Last known location Clairmont Okotoks Nanoose, BC Calgary Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really pissed. She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!" The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday. Page 5
Dear Friends Wendy and I wanted to let you know how much we appreciated your support while I was in the hospital and at home recovering. It meant so much to us with all your well wishes, visits and cards. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and friendship. Karl & Wendy Fraser High Priest and Prophet Page 6
Stated Business Meeting Ladies Programme Recipe Exchange As the Festive Season is almost upon us, I felt a glass or two of wine and a recipe exchange would be a pleasant use of our time while waiting for the men to finish their meeting. The recipes can be for a favourite holiday snack, a way to prepare leftover turkey, or an appetizer for those afternoon visits by friends and family; anything that helps you get through the holiday season. Just bring one copy of your recipe and we can print enough for the ladies in attendance. I look forward to seeing you. 26 BY BILL KAUFMANN, CALGARY SUN FIRST POSTED: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10, :25 PM MST UPDATED: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10, :45 PM MST For Calgarian Roy Jardine, the Cold War couldn t have been hotter. By the time the native of Oliver, B.C., had deployed to Korea, the war of movement was long over, replaced by a struggle of attrition to grab a few more slices of real estate before the inevitable ceasefire. On May 2, 1953, Jardine s Sherman tank position was struck by a battalion-strength barrage from Chinese troops determined to move those yardsticks at a place called Hill 187. They d picked the wrong place to hit, he said. They had four to 500 troops and we devastated them, said Jardine, 84, then a tank crew commander with the Lord Strathcona s Horse (Royal Canadians). He figures the nighttime battle lasted for three hours, as he hosed down his attackers with a turret-mounted.50-cal. machine gun, while those below him joined in with the tank s 76-mm cannon. We kept going with that machine gun until we burned up both barrels, he said. He and his crew, said Jardine, felt alone and illuminated by Canadian searchlights bounced off clouds that profiled both them and their Chinese foe. I was the only one there with my crew, there were no officers we could have been massacred, he says. It was a nerve-wracking experience. As well, he adds, it was the last major firefight involving Canadian troops, until they would engage Croatian forces 40 years later in a peacekeeping mission. There was also a time for tenderness and mercy, said Jardine, who recalled encountering starving Koreans behind the front line. Our tank had emergency rations and we d open up the bins for the kids, he says. In 2008, Jardine returned to visit the Hill 187 battle site, now part of a tense demilitarized zone between the two Koreas. He came within 100 meters of where his tank had made its stout stand, a place that was lushly overgrown. It was a funny feeling when you think of it it looked more like a park, he says. But there s shrapnel still in those hills, and unexploded ammunition. The striking affluence of a South Korea that was ruined and impoverished during the war validated Canada s sacrifice. Page 26
We Remember Demolay at Remembrance Day Ceremony LEGION OF HONOR In October PC Noble Andy Sands and PC Noble Terry Dean had the privilege of presenting a donation of $5,000. From the Al Azhar Shriners (Legion of Honor) Society to the Canmore Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Unfortunately that was the same day as the shooting on Parliament Hill. As a result the DND cancelled all parades. We were greeted by the officers and OR s all in MUFTL, the cadets were not present. We were then given a tour of their facility which had been built by donations from local businesses and many hours of volunteer labour. A true credit to all involved. As in the picture Andy tried his hand on the flight simulator, in the dark a very realistic experience with the whole machine moving with the controls, a bit hit with the cadets (and Andy). We were very impressed with what the cadet leaders have accomplished and know the cadets are getting first class training from them and the equipment. Their CO must be a very proud and dedicated officers (as with all the staff and volunteers). Our future military is in good hands. PC Noble Terry Dean Page 27
