1 Page #1 Top Story Oddfellows Welcome New Members March 1st, 2011 The Initiatory Degree was conducted by the Lodge members on March 1st, The members of the Lodge were happy to welcome Bros. Braden Alexander and Travis Warford into the fraternity. Many thanks to Bro. Jack Reed our degree captain for organizing the members to perform this degree; even having to recruit Bro. Reid Hollander to perform the Warden s part in the ritual to ensure all the parts were adequately filled. It is the membership s hope these two members will be active in their as Brothers of the Lodge. Braden Alexander Is a 20 year old first year University of Lethbridge student originally from Mississauga, Ontario. He came to Lethbridge to attend a course of study offered at very few institutions acrosscanada. Once completing his degree Braden hopes to become a music producer. The Lodge looks forward to Braden bringing his musical talents to the regular meetings every 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. Travis Warford Is a self employed carpenter and project manager originally from St. Johns, Newfoundland. Travis wanted to join the Oddfellows to get to know and give back to the community. The Lodge looks forward to getting to know Travis better and to experience his unique sense of humour. 2 Page #2 It is always a merry time to contribute to the community! At the Salvation Army, Noble Grand Al McMane presents a cheque to Debbie Bakker Every year at Christmas the Oddsfellows give to local charities and in 2010 it was no exception. The Oddfellows contributed to the following groups: The Galt Museum The Salvation Army Family Services The Lethbridge Soup Kitchen The Lethbridge Food Bank The Interfaith Food Bank The LSCO AND SO IT WAS CHRISTMAS! December 12th, 2010 was the Kid s Christmas Party! On Dec.12th, 2010 the Lodge played host to 16 children between the ages of 6mo. and 13 yrs and to 40 adults who s ages only Sanata really knows. For a total of 56 people. Santa s arrival followed a number of Christmas carols sung by the majority including a popular number called I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus which drew a chuckles from the younger crowd and with the sound of Jingle Bells in the air in walked Santa Claus with gives for all the children.gift bags and toys were distributed by Santa with a few of the children too shy to sit on Santa s knee. Presents were opened in unison with shouts of thankyou, thankyou ringing through the room. Special thanks to Santa and all of his helpers. Santa was played by Ken Turcotte who is seen below getting a special thanks from his wife. Bro. John Worne with his son Shaun was one of those little ones too shy to sit on Santa s knee, maybe next year! We all see mommy (Suzanne Turcotte) kissing Santa Claus

4 Page #4 Our most successful event!! 2011 United Nations Speech Competition Winner! On Sunday afternoon, February 27th, the IOOF Zone #1 held its annual speech competition for a trip to the United Nations. Ten students from Grade 10 and 11 participated in the speech contest. The winning competitor was Carly MacLennan, a grade 11 student at LCI High School in Lethbridge. Her topic was entitled Humanitarian Projects of the United Nations. The competition had a much better response than in past years with a total of 10 speakers from Medicine Hat, Taber, Stirling and Lethbridge. There were 75 people present as parents, friends and members of the Order enjoyed an entertaining afternoon. Back row: Bro. Gordon Lowe, Callie Gundlock, Dan Waeckerlin, Bro. Jim Walker, Iain Sander, Carly MacLennan and Bro. Larry Conley Front row: Rachel Korbie, Katrina Miyanaga, Nicole Leeson, Ashley Northey, Antonia Comanda, Rachele Neilsen Runner-up in the speech competition was Callie Gundlock, a grade 11 student of Chinook High School in Lethbridge. Her topic was Empowering Women in Developing Countries. The third place finisher was Iain Sander, a grade 10 student at Catholic Central High in Lethbridge. His topic was Fighting Indifference. While the three judges Heather McDermid, Eric Niemonen and Don Scott from the Toastmasters Club deliberated the marks, last year s speech winner, Hannah Hasegawa, a grade 12 student at LCI in Lethbridge, spoke about her experiences on last summer s trip to the UN. At the conclusion of the afternoon, Carly MacLennan, as the winner for Zone 1, was presented with the Marj and Roland Snowden Annual Trophy and will receive a personal trophy to keep in remembrance of the event. The Alberta contigent will leave Calgary on July 2nd, and return July 14th, Our winner Carly MacLennan being presented with the Speech Competition trophy by Bro. Gordon Lowe chair of the event. Lethbridge Lodge #2, I.O.O.F. provided refreshments afterwards, giving the competitors and judges an opportunity to meet and discuss the afternoon. There were 57 Brothers, Sisters and their spouses or friends enjoying the evening MC d by Brother Ron Shemanchuk. As always the food was great! Don Thurlow 60years an Oddfellow Something else to celebrate!! Congratulations to Brother Bill Hand for being chosen one of the top WGTF teaching professionals. Out of 1000 s of WGTF members, he was one of only 100 who was chosen as the top representatives of their profession in Bill was successful in undergoing a rigorous examination of not only his teaching ability but his contributions to teaching and golf in general. So if you are looking for pointers this summer you know who to go and see! REMINDER OF EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE There are two awards of $500 available each year for post secondary study, to children or grand children of members of Lethbridge Lodge #2. The request must be made in writing to Lethbridge Lodge #2 between May 1st and July 31st, Apply to PO Box 116, Lethbridge. A proper application form with all applicable regulations will then be sent to each student making the request. The applicant must be under 25yrs of age and a full time student registered or enrolled in post secondary studies at a university, college.
