1 From The Principals Desk Up & Coming 2016 BULLETIN It seems like just yesterday I was preparing last month s Bulletin, the time is passing by too quickly! We have had a busy month that saw our students involved in many activities on and off school property. Our month started with the Annual Barton School Bottle Drive where we had a group of dedicated students, staff and volunteers collect over $500 in refundables, money raised will help pay for school activities like guest presenters and field trips. Grades 2, 3, 4, & 6 completed Nova Scotia Provincial Assessments in Math and Literacy (results will be shared when they are available). We had our first school assembly which included prize draws and three students drawn to win Lunch With the Principal (see photo). Home & School hosted a very delicious Thanksgiving Dinner, many members of the Barton School Community came together to enjoy a terrific Barton School tradition. Our students were short of their $1,500 fundraising goal for the Terry Fox Run but did earn a popcorn & movie afternoon and an afternoon of activities. Audrey and Dylan were our top fundraisers and were the principal and Phys. Ed teacher for the day respectively (see photos). Our entire school went to Dempsey Corner Orchards in Aylesford (see photos) and had an eventful three hours learning about bees, apples, pumpkins, eggs, and lots more, our students won t soon forget this day! We finished the month with a presentation from the Maritime Centre for African Dance and a skating trip to the Digby Arena. October was Mi kmaq History month, we set up a display in the lobby, we played a special O Canada in Mi kmaq and teachers focused parts of their teaching on learning about Mi kmaq history. Stephanie in 6-McFarland/Boudreau for Math and Reading Isabelle in 5-Boudreau for Math Noah in 3-Quinlan for Math Chloe in 1-Mullen for Reading Delaynie in 2-Mullen for Math PARENT - TEACHER Term 1 is coming to a close, Report Cards will be sent home November 24th with Parent Teacher Meetings being held on the evening of November 30th from 6:00-8:00 PM and on December 1st from 1:00-3:00 PM. Please call the school to book your 10 minute appointment with your child s teacher(s). FACEBOOK PAGE Each week, our school Facebook Page is updated to keep families and the community in the loop to what is going on. Please encourage families to join the group so everyone is getting all of the important information. Once the winter weather hits, we will update the school page in case of a closure. BREAKFAST PROGRAM Each day our Breakfast Program serves a healthy breakfast to approximately 50% of our students. We serve: toast with peanut butter, jam, or margarine, cereal, juice, and milk. We are always looking for donations for this and would love if you could donate: Cereal - multi-grain Juice - apple and/or orange Peanut Butter Jam Margarine THANKS! AUDREY ANDERSON PHYS. 3 Barton Bulletin Page 3 Home & School News Thank you to everyone who volunteered at Home and Schools Thanksgiving dinner. An event like this could not have happened without you! It was a great day with great people. Also, thank you to everyone who supported this year s apple fundraiser. Funds raised will help support students and programs. Save the Date: November 9- next Home and School meeting, 2:30 pm. On the agenda will be ideas for our Christmas fundraiser as well as the annual Christmas Bazaar. Everyone welcome. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS OF INTEREST LITERACY GOALS We will improve reading comprehension scores as measured by the provincial assessment by 10% in 2016, 2017, and 2018 as compared to data from 2012, 2013, and Updates - Working with Digby Library to have new and engaging reading material - how could we support your child better? Let us know. Author of the Month - Gary Paulsen Strengthening Reading and Writing Centers with support from School Board staff and Collaborative Learning Time. Consistent Running Records to determine reading levels which will give teachers valuable information.lit MATH GOALS By , provincial assessments will show that 50% of our students have reached the outcomes in numeracy. Updates - IXL - contact teacher for login information to practice at home Math challenges/mad Minute - teachers will begin class activities to improve Math skills. Thanks to Ms. Boudreau for the many different challenges. Math Workshops have been implemented with support of School Board staff and Collaborative Learning Times. Mrs. Mullen s class is staying busy with brand new Math Centers! CULTURAL GOALS We will increase, to 85%, the extent to which our school addresses matters related to racial equity and cultural proficiency. Updates - Guest Speakers Field Trips Celebrate Cultural Holidays November will be spent learning about and respecting what Veterans have done for us. Mr. McFarland is including notable cultural holidays in his morning announcements. Mrs. Quinlan s class is learning about Aboriginal Homes.

6 Dress for the Weather With winter just around the corner, it is important that your children dress for the weather. We ask that each child has a warm coat, snow pants, boots, hat and gloves/mittens. Unless it is colder than -14 C, we will be heading outside to play for recess and lunchtime. We have extra outside clothing here if needed, please contact the school.
