2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Positive Vibe Foundation (formerly, Get Lost MD (Muscular Dystrophy) Foundation) prepares people with cognitive or physical disabilities for paid employment in the food service industry. We accomplish our mission by training and employing people with disabilities at Max s Positive Vibe Café. Background Max Larcen couldn t get a job. Max had the skills and attitudes to be successful in the food service business. But he wasn t getting any job offers, because potential employers weren t able to see beyond his muscular dystrophy. That s when Max and his father, Garth, a seasoned restaurateur in his own right, came up with the concept for Max s Positive Vibe Café and incorporated the Get Lost MD Foundation as a non-profit organization. Max's Positive Vibe Café, an attractive and popular 125-seat restaurant in Stratford Hills, functions as the lab where students hone the skills they acquired in class in the context of a real life setting. Since our first graduation in 2005, more than 1,200 students have completed the training program. Approximately 30% are employed at any given time. In addition to learning hands-on job skills, students experience additional benefits. They become more selfdetermined and self-motivated. They are more able to advocate for themselves. Their communications and social skills improve. As a result of participating in the training, students also find connectivity to their communities which helps build relationships and confidence that transcend the workplace. Impact Accomplishments, : The Coaches' Kick-Off, VibeFrost, VibeFest, and Souper Bowl continued to raise funds for our mission. Our Guest Bartender Series, featuring local personalities including Tim Kaine, Kathy Graziano, and Todd Parnell, raised awareness of our mission.we have graduated nearly 1,200 students.our Community Liaison specialist helped us engage more school systems and their special needs students in our work.goals of : We will continue to expand our catering activities.we will continue to build our brand while furthering our mission and reach.we will continue to increase awareness of and attendance at a variety of events like the VibeFrost, VibeFest, Coaches' Cook-Off, and Souper Bowl.We will continue to engage with schools and community groups to recruit more students and employers. Needs Sustainability is our most pressing need.we need to make the most of our rebranding efforts in order to attract more patrons to the Cafe.Long-term, we would like to be more proactive in helping our graduates obtain work. The Community Liaison Specialist is helping us begin this effort. Areas Of Service Areas Served 2
3 Areas Metro Richmond Richmond, City Chesterfield County Henrico County Students come primarily from Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico. We would gladly welcome students from other areas but inadequate transportation options for people with disabilities limit our geographic reach. Restaurant patrons come from a 50-mile radius around Richmond. Service Categories Special Education Job Training 3
4 Programs Programs Core Training Program Description The Core Training Program is the organization's signature program. Students with cognitive or physical disabilities are referred to the Positive Vibe by area school systems, the Department for Rehabilitative Services, the Center for Independent Living, and other groups. Up to ten students are accepted in each class, and two classes are held each day -- one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Classes meet for two hours each day, five days a week, for four weeks. In addition to their class time, students serve as interns at Max's Positive Vibe Café, an attractive 125-seat restaurant in Stratford Hills, which functions as a "lab" where students hone their skills in a real-life setting. During their course of study, students learn about every aspect of food service and preparation, including: Personal hygiene Kitchen sanitation and food safety Introduction to bussing Introduction to dishwashing Restaurant safety Measuring and knife skills Kitchen utensils and equipment Preparing, cooking and serving Resume building and interview techniques Workplace communication Confidence building Each training session includes a field trip to Willow Oaks County Club, where the General Manager's guided tour of the Club's foodservice operations gives students an overview of the variety of jobs and settings available to them. Budget $0.00 Advanced Training Program Description The Advanced Training Program allows us to help those students who are capable of doing more. Selected graduates are invited to take Advanced Training. Advanced Training is most often conducted one-on-one. Curriculum areas are tailored to meet each individual student's needs and can include subjects like knife skills, cooking, etc. Budget $0.00 4
