2 Dear Parents and Students We are pleased that you are interested in joining our Sixth Form. The Priory School has a vibrant and welcoming Sixth Form. Our students often describe belonging to the school as belonging to an extended family. At The Priory School, we work closely with our students and parents to enable students to meet their academic potential. Whilst achievement in academic subjects is important, we believe that the development of student s personal skills is imperative. To support students outside their subjects we offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities such as supporting students in completing the Extended Project Qualification and Sports Leaders Courses to Post 18 information opportunities such as careers talks, Apprenticeship workshops, UCAS workshops and Oxbridge training. The Post 18 opportunities vary from year to year and are dependent on students needs and opportunities that present themselves throughout the year. Some examples of Post 18 opportunities over the past few years are listed below: Running The Young Person of the Year Award Talks by academics on studying: Law Linguistics Studying at Cambridge and Oxford Accountancy Apprenticeship talks and access to our Apprenticeship Fair How to write a personal statement Gap Year presentations Students Finance Talk for Students and Parents Increasingly, universities are looking beyond students grades and assessing where they have developed their knowledge and skills outside the classroom. To support our students we provided detailed careers guidance through our careers guidance service and strongly encourage students to undertake work experience related to their courses. We also offer many extra curricular opportunities in the form of trips, sporting competitions and musical productions. All students are expected to engage positively with students lower down the school through programmes such as paired reading, big brother and big sister mentoring and our Ambassador programme. As part of our Ambassador programme all students are expected to volunteer 2 hours of their time per week. Through the programme students are able to work either in school within departments or within the local community on a voluntary basis. The programme has been running for a number of years and has benefited our students tremendously in developing their confidence and through being able to work in professional environments. 4 Preliminary Choices for A level/btec/technical courses Please indicate your choices in ORDER OF PREFERENCE. All students should initially choose 3 subjects. A reason must be given as to why you have chosen each subject. 1 A level/btec/technical subject 2 3 If you wish to study further Maths please indicate this as your fourth option. Maths should also be in the main options above. If you are currently expected to achieve A/A*/7+ at GCSE you may also wish to select a fourth options. Students are advised that universities will make their offers based on 3 A levels at the end of Year 13. 4

5 Timeline for Year 11 Students 9 th November 2018 Students select their 3 options and hand in their registrations to form tutors or the box in the front reception 21 st January 1 st February 2019 Guidance meeting with Head of 6 th Form, Mrs Armitage W/C 11 th February 2019 Guidance letters will be sent home 1 st /2 nd /3 rd July 2019 Sixth Form Induction days, further guidance available Summer 2019 Students complete their bridging projects 22nd August 2019 W/C 2 nd September 2019 GCSE results are released, Mrs Armitage is available for further guidance Term begins Student s signature: I agree with my child s options and understand the registration requirements.
